  • 29 people were blinded by the beauty of this song and clicked dislike on accident.

  • Decades ago, LC performed on Austin City Limits. This was one of the songs he did on that program. It was the best version of this I've ever heard. Partly due to the trumpet solo at the end. If I could buy a DVD of that program, I'd do it in a heartbeat. The best collection of songs, singers and musicians ever gathered in one place at the same time.A few of the song videos used to be posted on this site but were pulled. Pity!

  • @Mongo1940 I remember him on Austin city limits,... it was first time I heard him and he did "the FUTURE". It got me hooked on his music.

  • The lyrics of this song are a great translation of the poem "Pequeño vals Vienés" from the Spanish poet Federico García Lorca. Ana Belén has a very nice versión in Spanish. You may read about Federico García Lorca at the home page of the Lorca Foundation.

All these people "into blues" ...are they busy killing themselves , keeping themselves low...While LA VIDA is there right before them blinded eyes?

Own choice. Own border. Own closing-in.

  • Never...and that leaves me never a second chance to speak..and I do realise that...

    Never...

Did a man make woman sing so perfectly woman-ly as L. Cohen does here.

Not Pink Floyd. Not Rod Stewart, Not Roxy Music...

No-one...as far as the eye can see.

    This is so brilliant!.

    Bernard

  • wow

  • Some people sing his other songs but nobody dares to sing this one. The most beautiful, sexual, smooth, passionate, burning song I ever heard. That's why at 74 years old his concerts are all sold out. and this one video has been shown, as I write this, 722,871 times. What a tribute. What a guy!

  • Perhaps my favourite of Leonard Cohen songs. Right up there with Famous Blue Raincoat, Joan of Arc and True Love Leaves No Trace

  • I'm beginning to discover Leonard Cohen only now and I'm kicking myself: what've I been doing all these years not knowing he and his music existed. "Late have I known thee, oh beauty, late have I known thee", if you don't mind my quoting St. Augustine with regards to you, Mr. Cohen

  • with Santa Monica's tears... ( Augustine's mother)

  • @Johananful My sentiments exactly. The Book of Longing brought me to him while I was in Costa Rica a few weeks ago. Wow. What an incredible book of poetry.

  • I've loved listening to Leonard Cohen for years...this is one of my favourites......wish I could waltz!

  • This is one of Cohen's purest songs of all.

So much it expresses- of craving and longing, nostalgia, desire, craving and longing again, nostalgia, desire...

    This song never ends.

Thank you so much, 'ghitza0a0lu0cleo' --

    Elisabeth - from Paris, Europe.

  • Amen!You really get him.

    Namaste!

    Francine

  • @Lieslann Definitely!

  • I had the great pleasure to see Leonard Cohen in the Garden last Friday. He was so purely unassuming, a real man and human being with immense talent that gave more than his all and was accompanied by his very talented musicians and singers. It is apparent they love each other and love their work! The only other time I felt such a presence was when I saw Elvis! Bravo, Mr. Leonard Cohen for staying true and alive. We need you.

  • dance with Y in Vienna.............................one two three.......this waltz,EXCELLENT,wish i could see them all together on stage in The Philippines,Singapore or Hongkong

  • I saw the great Mr. Cohen last month in Belgrade.... it was the best night of my life, the very best concert you can imagine would not raise up to the one he gave us in the Belgrade Arena... I thank you from my heart Mr. Cohen, and hope to see you at least once more...

  • This is one of the best melodies by Leonard Cohen. Probably because the lyrics where already written by the great Garcia Lorca so he could focus more on the music.

  • Great song, Great man

  • Beautiful!

  • grat song, hope it helps to increase the rputation of Lorca

  • extatique chanson

  • I was a bit in love with Julie Christensen. It's nice to be 20 but it's over.

  • I am happy to hear that the great Mr. Cohen is touring once more, maybe for the last time. I already have my tickets-- I missed the last tour, and will not let this one pass me by!

  • Was it?

  • MINUNAT!!!!!

  • I grew up back in the 60-70 with his music this is soooo beautriful!!..does any one know the names of the two ladies doing the backing vocals?...wonderful voices completing his..

  • Julie Christensen and Perla Batalla. Julie's work in this piece is particularly outstanding.

  • Oh, you are welcome! They are still working and have videos here. They have done several versions of Anthem that I like very much.

  • Yes! Julie Christensen and Perla Batalla are absolutely essential to Cohen's fine work in the last 20 years. They are beautiful singers and beautiful women. Me. I'm partial to Ms. Batalla. What a hot alto.

  • I,m 52 yaers old..Leonard Cohen make me still cry....since I was 16...My daugther loves him tool..Viva Federico Garcia Lorca y sus textos!

Now in vienna there's ten pretty women

Theres a shoulder where death comes to cry

Theres a lobby with nine hundred windows

Theres a tree where the doves go to die

Theres a piece that was torn from the morning

And it hangs in the gallery of frost

    Ay, ay, ay, ay

Take this waltz, take this waltz

Take this waltz with the clamp on its jaws

  • Oh I want you, I want you, I want you On a chair with a dead magazine In the cave at the tip of the lily In some hallways where loves never been On a bed where the moon has been sweating In a cry filled with footsteps and sand Ay, ay, ay, ay Take this waltz, take this waltz Take its broken waist in your hand This waltz, this waltz, this waltz, this waltz With its very own breath of brandy and death Dragging its tail in the sea
  • Theres a concert hall in vienna

Where your mouth had a thousand reviews

Theres a bar where the boys have stopped talking

Theyve been sentenced to death by the blues

Ah, but who is it climbs to your picture

With a garland of freshly cut tears?

    Ay, ay, ay, ay

Take this waltz, take this waltz

Take this waltz its been dying for years

  • Theres an attic where children are playing

Where Ive got to lie down with you soon

In a dream of hungarian lanterns

In the mist of some sweet afternoon

And Ill see what youve chained to your sorrow

All your sheep and your lilies of snow

    Ay, ay, ay, ay

Take this waltz, take this waltz

With its Ill never forget you, you know!

This waltz, this waltz, this waltz, this waltz ...

  • And Ill dance with you in vienna Ill be wearing a rivers disguise The hyacinth wild on my shoulder, My mouth on the dew of your thighs And Ill bury my soul in a scrapbook, With the photographs there, and the moss And Ill yield to the flood of your beauty My cheap violin and my cross And youll carry me down on your dancing To the pools that you lift on your wrist Oh my love, oh my love Take this waltz, take this waltz Its yours now. its all that there is.

  • I like this song!

  • I really adore this song, already since I was a little girl!

    So beautiful!!

  • He was much more somber back then. He has a great moment with back vocalists. Very nice version.

  • increible y el final a tres voces...maravilloso

  • beautiful , beautiful poetry

  • and in the dark wake of your footsteps,

my love, my love, I will have to leave

violin and grave, the waltzing ribbons

    --Federico García Lorca 1929

THIS IS THE ORIGINAL POEM WRITEN IN 1929 and 8 yrs before Lorca was executed by the Facist during the Spanish Civil Warl. Read Hemingway's "For Whom The Bell Toll." And travel to Spain after all they are the reason we are in America and were first white Europeans to the new world.

  • In Vienna there are four mirrors

in which your mouth and the echoes play. There is a death for pianothat paints little boys blue.

There are beggars on the roof.

There are fresh garlands of tears.

    Ay, ay, ay, ay!

Take this waltz that dies in my arms.

Because I love you, I love you, my love,

in the attic where the children play,

dreaming ancient lights of Hungarythrough the noise, the balmy afternoon, seeing sheep and irises of snowthrough the dark silence of your forehead

    Federico Garcia Lorca 1929

  • Little Viennese Waltz

In Vienna there are ten little girls,a shoulder for death to cry on,and a forest of dried pigeons.

There is a fragment of tomorrowin the museum of winter frost. There is a thousand-windowed dance hall.

    Ay, ay, ay, ay!

    Take this close-mouthed waltz.

Little waltz, little waltz, little waltz,

of itself of death, and of brandy

that dips its tail in the sea.

I love you, I love you..

with the armchair & the book of death, down the melancholy hallway,in the iris's darkened garret,

  • my modern dance is to this song, best choreography ever! we performed it yesterday and got so many awards and positive feed back!

  • The two girl who are the backing vocalists at the end were in the climax of an orgasm. They could barely move their lips.

    A completely majestic song.

  • haha

  • Bravo L. C.! Wonderful as always.

  • I'm going to see him live in Dublin this summer...I can't wait

  • This song, by this man means so much to me. Each time i hear it I feel so romanticaly moved and transported that I am so thankful for the knowing of Leonard Cohen. I think this song by this man is the most wonderfully graceful and moving erotic thing I have ever known.

  • A wonderful song. I first heard this in his concert on Austin City Limits in late '80s or early '90s....this is essentially the same band and singers. How about Julie Christianson and Perla Battala! Beautiful and talented! I love this song.

  • Loveeeeeeeeeeeeee this song! It's totally gonna be my first dance for my wedding in 3 weeks time!!!! <3

  • Leonard Cohen: The essence of cool. I have been a fan since I was 10 years old. Didn't really understand much from the lyrics at that time, but his music and voice just captivated me even then.

  • Never can have enough..pure magic. Yes, lucky me..was at his concert here in Montreal last year..what a nite!

Each song feels totally personal...and directed 'just to me'!

  • so moving! could listen forever to this voice

  • I have his shirt on and I am only 11

  • Great song , great voice .

  • I Love leonard cohen

  • this song makes me think to a man, and now i am sure that it' s really love

  • I love Cohen, I bought a couple of books in 1968 or 9 as I was traveling across Canada with nothing but a small tent, and two dogs I bought 2 books of poetry one was his and now 40 years later I still get chills down my spine when I listen to him. When we lived in Germany a family friend went to school with his daughter in France and she obtained a pre-release tape of what was then his current album it was amazing.

  • I'm 47 just started to listen to leonard again FANTASTIC !!!!!

  • I could listen forever. He keeps me enchanted with his poetry and truths... Thank you!

  • I'm so happy , Im going to see this wounderful man on aplril11, "HE'S A GREAT POET AND LEGEND" I LOVE YOU LEONARD COHEN:)

  • Great song! Just Turn of the lights, sit down and relax=)

  • As a strong and proud conservative I want to say this man is the greatest poet of our time. He's a huge leftist as is obivious in many of his lyrics but....he writes such sweet loving words that I must admit I'm a HUGE fan. We are all blessed to be hear to experince his greatness.

  • He's not such a Leftist when it comes to the soul. He is a God-believer, not an atheist. And he understands service, sacrifice and suffering. That's downright Chirst-like.

Brilliant poet. Almost infinite depth of soul. Extraordinarily spiritual. Yet a man of tremendous humility and charity. A Great soul.

  • Das ist KLASSE!!!!

  • Best artist and poet ever

  • lorca come..... como mazorcas

  • No doubt Frederico Garcia Lorca was a genius poet expert in the rhythmic use of the profound metaphor. No doubt Leonard Cohen is a poet genius who now realizes that Poet Lorca was describing his lover which he wanted to join, Death who is Silent and Earth's Cemetary on any Hill looking Heavenward. Lyrics and composition are both magnificent.
