  • Hi Gaving, do you mind giving a tutorial on how to take those panos you take handheld please?? it would be great, i've been hanging to a tripod to do so, and it really sucks some time! cheers! great job BTW.

  • @fredlogan24yahoo Use Av

  • Nice way for the viewers to learn, keep up the great work :)

  • yep c'mon gav, vids on post production of one of your 15 min videos please??

  • Love your videos. We use them as inspiration for photo class at school. Keep it up. They rock.

  • absolutly awesome, thanks for your videos..

¿wich mode you used the camera?

  • Great as always!

  • After seeing the video, I decided to go to Wellesbourne Museum and shoot some similiar images, double processed the RAW's and I'm very pleased with the first results - thank you for the inspiration for the shoot!

  • OMG can you please teach me how to photoshop at 2:23? what tools did you use? can you please briefly explain plz plz plz....

  • Outstanding! Thank you very much!

  • @PhotoGavin any chance you can make a photoshop tutorial on your panoramic image you made?

  • You have done it again Gavin. Your 15 minute challenges are great. I always download your videos to my iphone and watch them to get inspiration. Keep your videos coming. Two a day will do.....

  • Very nice!

  • Yes, it must have been cold, Gav. Your nose was red

  • I love the 15 minutes challenges ! I found it so fun when Gavin found out the propeller moved! Great shots as always .

  • hye Gavin,

can u teach me how u make the panorama photo of the air plane (5:59)?

  • i really like your photos.

but rather than photo challenge how about calling it "photoshop challenge"

  • maybe you can explain to me how you made the last shot to look like HDR pic?

  • Great photos! Are those original photos on the video without being retouched or manipulated in photoshop?

  • Hello gavin!

Could you please make a tutorial on how you edited these pictures? I love what you did wih the colours and everything!

    Cheers/ Anton

  • Great video as usual. Gav. Thanks. Toi

  • All I kept thinking is "did you get a release from the guy in the blue jacket" at 6:20?

Kinda sticks in your head when you work with photo editors too much.

  • those pictures were fantastic!Gavin (Y)

  • do those dvds contain material that you do not have here ?

  • Gavin great job with these vids no tripod and the shots are crisp enough for me you have so much to offer. gonna check the website you are inspiring..... not like the froey guy big mouth ramble on an say nothing

  • aahhhhh why didn't you give the Nimrod (left of the big jet engine) a beautifufull head on shot?! That would be a impressive one I guess.. Love the vid! Great to see someone photographing aircraft from a non aviation photography perspective!

  • could you briefly explain how you merged the two images of the airplane and the sky (2:00 mark) together to get that great result ? thx

  • @ThienVNguyen No big secret there... Copied the two images onto two layers... Auto Aligned the two layers... masked back heavy shadows.

  • @PhotoGavin I was also impressed by the result you got merging two images into one. May be it is possible for you to make such kind of photoshop video lesson. I think it can be interesting for many people.

I really loved this photoset, thank you.

I really loved this photoset, thank you.

  • could you briefly explain how you merged the two image of the airplane and the sky (2:00 mark) together to get that great result ? thx

  • Gavin, i would be very nice to see an extra episode where you give us an example of some post processing of the 15m challenges.

  • wonderful shoots!!!

  • Hi Gavin - Love your work, and your videos! I'm just wondering, regarding the last image you took inside the jet engine (the wide angle one) - how did you get those striking colours in photoshop? Was it just increasing the saturation/vibrance, or was there more to it?

If you have a spare moment, I'd be honoured if you could have a look at some of my work (I have a couple of videos of my photos here on my channel) and give me a bit of expert critique. But don't feel obliged ;)

    Many thanks

    Martin

  • @MHammondOrganist Vibrance was the key, but also pumped up the fill light to open up the shadows.

  • HI Gavin! I like all your 15 mins challenge, you inspire me. I like the way you share your talent. You're fun to watch and in short time you were able to create awesome pictures. You're the man! :)

  • I started drooling at the endless photo opportunities that could be had there.

Thanks I really enjoy your 15 minute challenges.

  • I think this is all HDR (High Dynamic Range) isn't?

  • Another very interesting piece Gavin. Can you tell me, were there any lens changes in the process? What lens(es) did you use?

  • @hajozamic The Canon 24-105L was used for ALL shots.

  • @PhotoGavin Hey gavin, about the lens you are using.. why not use the 24-70? isn't it sharper? or you feel like you need the extra 35mm? cuz im thinking witch of them to buy and id love your opinion thx

    and Great vid as usual.

  • i appreciate and enjoy your videos Gavin, you inspire!

  • Love all your challenges but this was the best one yet. Excellent ! thanks for sharing.

  • i wander the same thing as @eastwarrior77 .. can you please explain us how u edit the colors ?

  • Brilliant Gavin! Once again!

  • Love how you bring the colors out. The photos of the plane decals look so dull in the video, but the images you took seemed to pop with color. I have big trouble doing this. Can you explain? Vibrance?

  • God dammit man you've done it again. brilliant video.

love the bit "it turns" your face was a picture.......lol

would love to see pp vid of 2 shots....cherrs gavin you the man.

  • It turns LOL !!!! ha ha ha ha :)

  • Nice video! i like it. can You plz make a video on postprocessing those photos? i suppose that was an HDR... Cheers!

  • YAY, it's finally finished :D

  • Great vid Gavin!

  • Great stuff..... will be trying the 2 exposure trick in my next outing... Cheers!

  • Gavin, I love these 15 min challenges.. is it possible you could do a vid on how you would process a typical image from a 15 min challenge? great stuff...

  • I really love these 15 minute photo challenge. I recently purchased a Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS II. I would like to see what you can do with that lens in your 15 minute challenge.

  • Hey gavin,

Thank you so mutch for giving me inspiration to take some pics at my local (military) aviation museum in Soesterberg.

I will send you a PM with a link to the shots I took

Thanks again, really looking forward to your next vid!

  • As others have mentioned, you should show us examples of post-production.

Also I think you forgot to mention that the HDR at 2:23 would require a tripod, even though it seems that you didn't use one.

And, last but not least, let's see more videos please!

  • @hassoun6 A tripod would help, but it's not "needed", Photoshop's Auto Align Layers is the answer you're looking for.

  • very nice video and cracking editing on the shots for the video. great work!

  • "pssshh… that's a better angle" :-D Btw. I just love the photo you made then, it’s so dramatic! :)

  • Gavin, This has been the best shoot so far IMHO, one request though, could you do a video on putting a panorama from a hand held photo to be perfectly aligned?

Thanks so much for your videos, they are so helpful!

    Cheers m8 ;)

  • @tudajfor Not much to show if I did. Photoshop's Photomerge has been so good since CS3 that I don't have to do any retouching.

  • @PhotoGavin Ok, but maybe combine it with some other things that you did on the other photos in this video?

Anyway, thx for a quick response!

  • Great video Gavin.

I was wondering, when you combine the pictures in Photoshop, do the 2 pictures have to be exactly the same? Or can they be a little off from each other?

  • @allesanx3 I used "Auto Align Layers" wich can cope with a tiny bit of movement, but the closer the better.

  • Great video Gavin. Love watching and learning from your videos, u make things very easy to understand. I also never knew this place existed and I much prefer to see history in this condition rather than fully restored and new looking. I noticed from your video thought that you were more or less alone and left to your own devices. Was this a regular open day or a private day? Not sure if they get many visitors or not and as I plan to go and visit myself I would prefer it to be empty ;-)

  • @Scoobymad007 They have opendays twice a month. Outside of these times it's by appointment. Check out their website for info and remember to leave them a decent donation.

  • I'm always a little curious watching your videos (which I like, I hasten to add!) why you don't make use of a battery grip? I notice you reaching over your camera a lot in portrait orientated shots. I find that the second shutter release button my my battery grip makes taking these significantly more comfortable. I also like the added bulk in my hand even for landscape shots, it lets me little finger help more with the grip.

  • @FloatingOnAZephyr Look back on some of my videos and you'll see I did use a battery grip (Canon 40D) but since upgrading to the Canon 5D mkii I've yet to buy a grip. The price difference for the grip over the 40D is jaw dropping!

  • I love the way you edit your photos. They always look so bright and crisp. Great work, as always!!

  • Awesome work....

    "IT TUUURNS" :D

  • 5:15 is gorgeous, as everyone is saying ;)

But yeah, I could've spent all day here with my DLSR. SO many unique planes, lots of great angles. There were some planes with twin propellers (see how there are actually 2 propellers on each engine on the plane in the picture at 6:07 and the yellow one in the background at 4:19), and I was really hoping you'd do something with those. Great propeller shots possible there

  • Great as always.

  • The shot at 5:15 is breathtaking!

    Great shot Mr. Hoey.

  • Great video Gavin! Love these 15 minute challenges. Keep em coming!

  • Yeah 5:15 was my favorite by far!

  • it turns! =D

  • 6:43 show us how you make it 3D like.

  • Please please show us your post processing tutorial for this great tutorial.

  • I thought that with a high ISO pictures came out grainy? How do you get good shots with 1600 ISO?

  • @xdownthelightx I use the noise reduction features found in Lightroom 3 / Photoshop CS5 which are very impressive.

  • Another great video, just goes to prove you can take amazing photos on the greyest of days! I would love to see a bit of your Photoshop work on some of these images....

  • I've been waiting for the next photo challenge, and here it is :) Thank you for another bunch of amazing photographs. Would you please make a video about shooting with a "prime lens", I mean the one with fixed focal length? I have a 50mm F1.8, which is a typical portrait lens, and I'm wondering how to use it for other purposes :) Cheers, g.

  • @gronki1 Look WAYYYY back and you'll find a couple of early 15 min photo challenges with the 50mm f1.8... about time I did another I think.

  • What song is in the background? I saw where it came from, but that doesn't give the song name or link/location.

  • @computersguy13 The link is at the end of the video and that ditty was HEADDING_FOR_THE_BATTLE which seemed rather apt I felt :-)

  • Oh my word, the picture at 5:16 ish is amazing!!

  • my friends and I in Saudi Arabia love your work and tutorials Gavin. we really enjoy watching your vids and and apply them in our photography :D

thank you so much for the effort man :)

  • thanks Gavin! wonderful photos and tips

  • Like a few other comments i would love to see some of the post work you have done, the pictures have turned out great for the conditions you are in with the weather and lighting.

Have you got any tutorials up for colour correction/colour enhancing type stuff already..?

  • I love your vids

  • i agree with everyone else, a video on your post production would be a massive help.

  • The panoramic, the propellors and tne engine... My favourite shots !! STEPPHAN2733/twitter and Flickr... Great job Jedi Master!! Cheers from Trinidad and Tobago

  • luck they removed the magnetos one faulse spark and well, put it this way gavin hoey will be no more. and it has no fule

  • @anyvid100 Life on the edge, my new motto for 2011 ;-)

  • Would it be possible to explain the process behind the panoramic shot?

    cheers

  • @FanboyRecording I briefly covered it in my last 15 min challenge video... Take an meter reading from the centre... set that reading in manual mode (all images the same exposure)... overlap the photos by roughly 30%... stich with Photomerge in Photoshop

  • 5:13 wow! damn watta beautiful shot! subscribed!

  • You nearly kneeled in a puddle of oil at 4:41 LOL.

  • Agreed.. Gav show how you did those post process.. Nice video once again and really cool pictures..!!

  • PROCESSING TUTORIAL!!!

  • Nice photos at 3:15, 5:14, 5:58

  • Wow, this was yet another fantastic 15 minute photo challenge video! This is my style of shooting. Great Job!

  • Great Work, Thanks!

  • Lol... Getting the right angle..

    Love the 6-in-1 picture..

  • Thanks for this one Gavin. There may be a trip to East Fortune airfield in the near future for me.

  • Another great photo challenge. great post work

  • It was great when you found out the propellor turned ahahaha :D Great shots mate.

  • 5:15 is so ridiculously awesome ;) even birds exactly in the upper left corner where the picture would be kind of empty ... did you edit them in or something? It's just kind of to perfect :D :D

  • @reik2006 A little to perfect, don't you think :-) Might just be a video coming on that one.

  • @PhotoGavin I'm looking forward to it ;)

  • @PhotoGavin Hee hee. Bird brush.

  • @PhotoGavin is it a double exposure?

  • @PhotoGavin the shot at 5:15. I dunno why it didn't put that that on...

  • J'adore ce gars! When the 2 hours photo challenge, Gavin? ;)

I'd like to see your post-processing too.

Very nice!!! thank you for your work!

  • I dont know when or why did I sub U, but I am glad i did :D

  • One of your BEST photo-shoots :))!

  • It turns! XD

  • Man you are talented!!

  • Plane of the panoramic picture looks like he's smiling :p

  • Can you please use the following challenge Canon EOS 7D?

  • @fotografjura90 its almost 5d exept no full-frame on 7D

  • @fotografjura90 The 7D is a super camera but my camera choice really made no difference to the images here.

  • @PhotoGavin I have not even thought of. I plan to buy 7d so I wanted to see some photos from him.

  • I love you video's. It gives me great inspiration Thanks !!

  • Very Nice Photo's

  • Brilliant photos mate. Brilliant.

  • Great video Gavin!!! Thanks.

  • I love your photo challenge!!!! But could you tell me why did you put the ISO at 400 ??? The weather seems cloudly but not as dark....

  • @mreinstein48 to get a smaller aperture obviously.

  • @mreinstein48 That's the magic of video. Dispite how it looked the light level was pretty low, so ISO400 was a safer bet to keep the shutter speeds up (camera shake down).

  • PROCESSING TUTORIAL PLEAAAZZZEEEE!

  • @piebekoster Keep watching, you never know what might happen ;-)

  • when you show your pictures in the video, is it true colours or did you correct them?

  • @svinehunden all was photoshopped for sure

  • @svinehunden I used a fair amount of vibrance in Adobe Camera RAW, so the colours will either pop or mute depending on the look I was after.

  • Hi Gavin,

Great photo challenge as always! I would love to see your post-processing steps on this one - especially on the RAF decal earlier on the piece and the very last jet engine shot. I love how you brought out the "grunginess" of the old aircraft.

Also, for one of the first pictures you had iso400 and a shutter speed of 1/500th of a second. Is there are reason you went for this combo and not iso100 at 1/125th of a second?

    Cheers,

    Carl

  • @carlknoxrobinson No particular reason for that combo. ISO 400 gives pretty much noise free results on the 5D Mkii and tends to be my baseline setting for very overcast days like this.

  • @tardis1996 Easy... use photoshop automate feature. Google for more info.

  • that shot where you moved the prop is amazing!

  • Some times too much Photoshop.

    have my respect

  • Your videos make me want to go out and shoot straight away!

  • You are great. Respects from Poland. :)

  • What cant you do...?!

  • Nice choice of music, great video again

  • im quite new to photography and wondering how he calculated the ISO and shutter speed at @3:00

is there a relationship/formula between the ISO aperture and shutter speed?

    thanks in advance!

  • @ktrwcm2010 General rule for (handheld) sharp shots: use a shutter speed of 1/millimeters. E.g.: he needs a shutter speed of 1/24 (1/30) or less when he shoots at 24mm (zoomed out). The more you zoom in, the faster your shutter speed needs to be in order to get a sharp picture.

To get a higher shutter speed you can: 1) increase sensitivity (iso) 2) decrease aperture

But he wants to keep his aperture so he doubles his ISO, resulting in a doubled shutter speed.

  • @victorvanpuyenbroeck thank you very much! i get the idea now!

  • @victorvanpuyenbroeck Spot on. I wanted the same aperture but with increased shutter speed (cold hands = camera shake)

  • Great pictures Gavin. Great work altogether.

  • that's so coooool! in the aviation museums i've been in they dont let you go near or touch any aircraft. many planes are suspended from the roof as well. I wish there's a museum like gatwick near where i live.

  • Talk about photoshoping! Awesome photos though, good work and nice angels.

  • Should be minimum 30 Minutes Photo Challenge. This video is to short.
