And yeah its possible the space furries use different terminology than we do for flight maneuvers. Though in reality yeah I don't think the developers did much research beyond watching Star Wars.
If I'm not mistaken (or blind), don't all of the levels shown in this video take place in a planet's atmosphere? Forget what I said about the G-Diffusers before, but they do not cancel gravity; they weaken its effect, enough for aileron rolls and Immelmann turns. I got this off the most official source online I could find, which, sadly, is the Star Fox wiki.
U-Turn: Looks like an actual U on its side from the side. U-turn is also easier to say than Immelmann. [Curse it, Spell Check doesn't even know his name!]
And the Arwing and Wolfen have special unique engine's called Gravity Diffusers, or G-Diffusers for short. Guess what their purpose is.. >_^. With engines that are able to cancel out the effects of gravity, the laws of potential energy are useless, as is the "tactical egg", advanced future science having overcome them.
My friend MatthewPatrick13, you're thinking like a "realism" lovin' 20th century fighter-pilot.
Star Fox takes place in the FUTURE, with an all animal cast, IN SPACE!! Classic rules of aerial warfare need not apply.
But to be fair, yes, the Star Fox barrel roll is an aileron roll, and WHY DOES EVERY VG & MOVIE WRITER THINK THAT 'BOGEY' MEANS AN ENEMY AIRCRAFT?! Have none of them taken actual pilot lingo courses?! The term for an enemy is a 'BANDIT', a 'Bogey' is an unidentified aircraft!
@greedys0ul AVGN reviews old video games, this is game theory where Matt takes all video games and makes their content relative to real life. (so troll harder)
Oh yeah, the whole point of this video was to debunk the barrel roll. Why have only a few people made comments on how the true barrel roll is different, and the aileron roll was the culprit and only served as a flight show technique? Deflecting projectiles? As in lasers? You can't do that without a melt-proof reflecting surface which if you had, you wouldn't need the high-speed aileron roll to begin with.
Oh dear, I got carried away with my argument. My apologies.
In MatPat's defense, though the Star Fox team uses spaceships, if they're in a planet's atmosphere, any and all particles in the air will cause drag on the Arwings. Also, how can gravity possibly be different? With their G-Diffusion system, if it was real, it'd be an unreliable device since it has to be in perfect sync with gravity at every select moment, something the world's fastest supercomputer cannot do. In space, I have no argument.
Hey, it's a video game; it doesn't apply to real life.
Anti-Gravity planes. Work in a system that grafity doesn't affect their flight patterns and egg motion. "Flight Show" techniques are now reused with a new meaning of defense with this system of flying.
One could argue the loop and Immulman turn in space, but you missed 1 key fact. As unrealistic as it is, the G-diffuser, which gives the ships maneuverability as if there is no gravity working against them.
regarding that its arcade shooter the games age sand bothyer facts that other opeople pointed out (space, g defuser system) i can excuse the loop being a circle. I agree nintendo should of been doing there homework on having the right names.
I should mention the fact that Starfox Assault called the barrel roll simply a roll and the "sumersault" a loop. true fact i never listened to peppy and didn't do a berrel roll.
Arwings use a G-diffusion system, which allows them to reduce the amount of gravity affecting the space jet, and provide extra proplusion. As said on the Wiki and the instruction booklet for Starfox Assault.
@pieisgood13 Yeah, I didn't mention the fact that different planets would also have different graviational pulls and you cannot apply the same physics of Earth to them because, again, that was already implied in the top comment.
The first frame is a reference to the J'accuse letter by Emile Zola, where he denounced antisemitism in the french army, and took a stance in the famed Dreyfus affair. On a side note that may be what got him murdered four years later.
@MatthewPatrick13 Matthew... Can I call you Matthew? Seriously, you deserve some sort of award. Like the "Most awesome non-science science guy on the intertubes" award. Not since AVGN, have I been so intertained by a premise so simple, yet so perfectly executed. You, sir, are An Hero.
I found out it wasn't a barrel roll when Google did their little easter egg. And I shared this video on Google+, so may have sent a couple of new viewers your way.
I already knew the Barrel roll thing, but not the name of what the "barrel roll" was really called.
Also, the same can be applied to the Banshees in Halo (Pretty much the same mechanics as in Star Fox), but at least they have the benefit of 1) the horizontal roll thingy also moves the Banshee to the left or right, making it a bit more practical, and for the loop being a perfect circle, the banshees rely on antigravity technology, rather than lift and thrust, to gain height.
All right, time to get more points! The reference at the beginning has to do with the letter titled J'accuse that was printed in a newspaper. The letter was an accusation to the government of France claiming that they put a man in jail for reasons they couldn't prove. There was a massive coverup that was unearthed, and it appears you have dug up a coverup by Nintendo! This is your statement to the world! I loved the Mathieu Patrique, also. Very nice touch :)
about the perfect circle: the arwing's engine is called the g-diffuser. This could refer to gravitation-diffuser, which, if it diffuses gravitation, could provide the conditions to do that perfect circle - performed in Space or in atmosphere. This is far fetched and nitpicking, but hey, thats what the show I love is all about! Peace!
Game Theory consistently takes my average everyday view on classic games I've spent too much time with and makes me appreciate them even more. MatthewPatric13, you've done this old school gamer a great service. Hats off to you my friend.
....I can't think of a witty comment. I've tried to think of a good one, but no matter what I think of, it's just not funny or witty. So I'll just leave it as I always do.
You’re only half right about the loop thing. For the times the starfox team is in space, there is minimal gravity and therefore doing a loop would not decrees or increase momentum.
Thanks for your good work on Game Theory, I really enjoy it.
One thing though, have you considered that gravity is...different in the Lylat system?
That might also be an explanation as to why their "loops" are a perfect circle.
But I am sure there's various things that would prove that gravity is similar to our real planet earth...also, they frequently maneuver in outter space.
There would be neither air friction nor...ehm...
Nevermind. this is borderline trolling, so... yeah ;)
@Nephtrien Not trolling at all! I was wondering if anyone would call me out on that, actually. Well spotted! The only response I would have is that the loop is ALWAYS a perfect circle whether they're flying through a large planet like Venom, where gravity would be intense and the egg would be more pronounced, or a nebula like Sector Y, where there would be next to zero gravity and the perfect circle would make sense.
@MatthewPatrick13 hey, thanks for your (quick) reply! Curious. I love delving into fictional stuff and trying to explain it. Which is also why I dig thine show so much :D For my finals in game design / concept art, I analyzed H.R.Giger's Alien Design (as scientifically as I could) I learned a lot from that. And it's awesome to see how much depth a design that can potentially change genres create design standards has.
@MatthewPatrick13 yeah and they use thrusters instead of propellers and the possibility of the fact that these ships can fly over the surface of a star without killing the pilot makes it more of a technical issue if it can be classified as such and it doesn't help that in game the "barrel roll" is only useful in moving out of the way of what's coming at you.
@MatthewPatrick13 Corneria is actually a good example of odd gravity, hell, everywhere in Lylat is. Seeing as how one can jump of a 20 story highway and land without even so much as a sprained ankle.
I'm not surprised a game where a fox and a rabbit are allies, don't have their flight maneuvers correctly named.
