Cats, similar to dogs, don't sweat like humans. When you play with them, or they get a good work out and become overheated or excited, they'll start to pant to cool off. :3

It can also be a sign of sickness if it's unprovoked, but as long as your kitty was playing, panting is perfectly natural (and adorable). :3

Usually it's because of being overheated, really stressed, or respiratory problems. If it's after play he might need a little time to catch his breath.
