I visited Chaco Canyon this past fall and was talking with a ranger there, and he said when this solstice dance happens you can hear it echo throughout the whole canyon. He said it's pretty magical to hear it...I believe him.
can someone tell me why do they dress up like this? is this also a shamanism and some kinda ritual? and what is the purpose of this dance?... i really wanna learn about it.. tnks
@saksikafa It's the buffalo dance. It's basically to honor the buffalo for what its done. now the ZUNI inparticular, im not sure for their reason. but in my tribe, they dress like this to sorta play the role of the animal, if that makes sense.
A sacred priviledge to witness, I do not know what I am, I have never known my mother or father, I am a man, that's all, I wish all were like me that way, my mother is the earth and the sky is my father
@505twix I understand, this way they remain sacred, just like catholics consider the bread and wine to be body and blood of Christ,.....but i agree with ya this is AWESOME!!! CUACUALTZIN(BEAUTIFUL)!!! = )
It is a beautiful dance and such a great place but with the drugs and alcohol it is destroying all Indian nations heritage and culture and thats what the Goverment wants, adapt the insanity of todays youth and their false culture, I see it in the reservations on the video clips and I saw it in the military with many of my Indian friends, Alcohol is the destroyer of life! The cultures and traditions are stronger!
allowing alcohol for the native people is the method the Government uses to control them. Native people should reject any kind of alcohol and go back to their culture and traditions. Here in Canada the kids in a small town force a vote and made alcohol illegal in their town. The domestic violence is reduce immediately. Why don't the Natives do small schools (2 to 3 days) to educate 'white people' about their culture? People will understand the native history and talk about that back home.
Zuni is such a beautiful place. I grew up there and loved it. I am part Zuni and come back to see how the drugs and alcohol have effected their heritage. I miss being down there it was home....but i will be back soon.
Pt. 2: I believe that a more serious problem comes from the youth who do not care enough to learn about their own culture and the adults who do not care enough to teach or pass on the language. It is only a failure to preserve our culture that allows it to become warped, diluted, or lost forever. Plus, this isn't Shaloko. The dance filmed is social. Plus, I guarantee that you will never find a Zuni who has been initiated into a Kiva and knows the dances would ever cheapen what is most sacred.
I alway laugh at the misguided beligerence toward white people from rez indians. White people who care enough to visit our lands and support our arts, crafts, jewelry etc. are the ones who really want to learn about our culture. Besides, who else are we going to sell our jewelry to? My grandma can only own so many squash blossoms LOL! In fairness though, there are tons of ignorant people (not just white) without a clue.
Shalako is no social it's a ceremonial dance! itz to bless the new houses in the village!!! dont say anything if you dont kno what it really is and what it means!!!! so i agree with thatonehopiboy!!!!
please, if you do attend a sacred dance, be respectful of the zuni culture and its people. i hope you enjoy your experience (s) and see that these are totally different from powwows. have a wonderful day!!
secondly, outside public can attend and see a any social dance, like this. you can video tape or, take pictures of your experience. however, if you ever stop by the pueblo, there are restrictions to non-native americans. no photos or video taping is allowed and all "visitors" should remain in the upper floor of the plaza, when sacred dances occur. if not, you'll have a run in with our tribal police.
first off, powwow songs and tribal dancing songs are different from each other. the similarity that your thinking, is coming from the beating of the drum. powwows do not have rattles or bells, contributing to the dance. therefore, "IF" you ever attend a tribal dance of such sort, it it totally different.
The local government is planning to pave a road to put dollars in their own, and contractors' pockets. The park itself is against it. The Native Americans there are against it. The locals are against it. Please join the cause and do anything you can. Be aware and be vigilant. This is a great American natural resource that must be preserved. A pavement will ruin it with more accidents, overstressed park facilities and disintegration.

If this is ok, than why can't they film Shalako Dance? Zuni people are confused.
koty2007tube 4 years ago
because this is a SOCIAL DANCE, the Shalako dance is not, you never film that its very sacred, unless you want something bad to happen to you
hopigirl 4 years ago 4
yeah the Dances shown are SOCIAL and the shaloko is too scared to be shown like that even more sacred then a CROSS in a CHURCH.....
