Jeff Daniels always protrays amiable characters, I was surprised that he protrayed such a smug, portentous character in this film. He truly is a talanted actor.
I appreciated the reference, but I felt like this film spent way too much time citing its influences, especially since it's supposed to be a film about the writer/director's childhood. When it gets so bogged down referencing so many "books and interesting films," I can't take it seriously anymore, especially when it makes an ill-conceived attempt to cleverly point out its own pretentiousness. But that's really the only major flaw; I thought it was pretty good otherwise.
Ffffuck off.

@ozeanographer I think that has everything to do with the character of the father, and very little to do with the film referencing its influences.

@ozeanographer "...ill conceived attempt to cleverly point out it's own pretentiousness." ?
