The pulling tackle seems pretty pointless. If anything, the tackle is only a key for LBs and Safety's to follow to the ball. The tackle should just seel or scoop like always. And as for the pitch read, the QB is supposed to pitch off the first shown defender, attacking his inside shoulder.
The read is the DE. If he doesn't squeeze then the QB gives. If he does squeeze then the option is carried out. This is a good play if read and executed properly. The trap is just a change-up to the regular veer where there is no trap pull and the DE is still the read. The trap almost forces the DE to squeeze as an adjustment, allowing the QB to carry out the second option.
i agree with amakelky, the tackle doesnt block on either play. who is the QB reading for the pitch?
AlexixelA2: any decent back will bounce it outside, and if the rest of the line and the receivers downfield0 have done their jobs, then it should be a big play. that is how i defend any trap as well, but it doesnt always work like it should.
This play, and any counter where a lineman pulls, is the easiest play to defend against in the world. All you have to do is teach your defensive ends to move inward when the tackle blocks inward. All he has to do is slam or even cut the lineman pulling and there is no hole, leaving a lone back running into his own linemen. Linebackers and corners should take care of the rest.
in theory yes it is, but the problem is that its natural for an aggressive defender to attack... if you were able to create the most disiplined defense in football history you would have no problem defending it haha
I don't dispute the tech for stopping the trap. However, your DE squeeze opens the option play making the QB read to pitch that much easier. What do you think?
@kevinretro naw its actaully the opp when the De squeeze's he makes the QB an RB go outside if he playd out or comes up field then he is opening up a cut back lane for the Qb to take off in or cause the qb to juke his ass an the De should always hit the QB on the opt no matter wat an let the CB's an Lb's take care of the RB
on both of these plays the tackle who pulls doesn't get a block. Who is he supposed to block if you are leaving the playside end for you veer read? This makes no sense...
