@jdmifsud14 Although we have criteria that will automatically generate a DEFCON response, we generally do what every State does itself: look at the situation & make a judgement. We base our analysis on what is happening, how leaders are reacting to it, history, and what we know of those who are calling the shots. It's an imperfect science, but when it comes to WW3, a lot of people will not accept what is happening. They won't believe it until someone else tells them it's happening.

Hmm, seems like March might be the time to be back up to Condition Blue. Either way, the "attacking Iran is a threat to Russian security" freaks me out some. If the US decides to attack Iran, it could (although less likely) to a full scale nuclear war...

@thesmart358 Well, Israel is far more likely to attack Iran, and we are a VERY close ally with Israel, much like Iran is with Russia... As you said, March might come with a condition upgrade. With China as an ally with Russia and North Korea, nuclear war is almost guaranteed if either the US or Russia get involved. All of their allies have access to numerous nuclear weapons... Unlike us with only two nuclear accessible allies... Quite concerning.

@postmortemarg 5 is the lowest level. If you meant highest, that would be 3. Happened back in the 80's.

@jdmifsud14 Correct and Incorrect. We were officially only ever at 3. During the Cuban Missile Crises the Army was at Defcon 2. Atleast that is what I always was told.

Actually, all US armed forces were at DEFCON 3 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, however Strategic Air Command was at DEFCON 2 until about mid-november.

We remained in DefCon 3 for an entire decade, then 4 until the end of the Cold War (not counting individual threats). Then we reached DefCon 3 during the 9/11 attacks.
