We took this danged road in our F-550 Dually a couple of years ago.. As soon as we got to Cripple Creek and on solid blacktop my wife made me stop the truck so she could get down on her knees and thank the Lord for getting us through.. In retrospect it was great fun..
My son and I took this road from Cripple Creek every Wednesday 10 years ago for two years so we could babysit for my grandson when he was a baby. I could do it in 45 minutes but had to add on another 5 minutes to my time at the end so my son could loose his breakfast. I try to tell everyone about it. Showed it to people I work with now and some can't even watch your incredible video without getting sick to their stomach. I love Shelf Road and thank you so much for all the entertainment !
that road is crazy i live not to far from it and it takes about 2 hours going slow to get from canon city to cripple creek on it lol dont take no one skeered with you they might be sittin in your lap
Thanks for another great video! We traveled this road in a 1980 Dodge Mirada car, hey what did we know...LOL. We had to stop and back up for other smaller more appropriate vehicles like Jeeps that we should've been driving....LOL,,,they had to back up and squeeze over for us too.....us damn tourists!...LOL
hey jeepstergal, a question for u. Is this the phantom canyon road or the other road that is marked as a 4X4 drive on the official Colorado map? I've done Phantom ....this one doesn't look like that. I stay in Springs..... so will try this one some time soon for sure.
No, Shelf Road and Phantom Canyon Road are two different roads but they do basically run parallel to each other. Shelf Road begins in downtown Canon City and ends up in Cripple Creek and Phantom Canyon begins before you get to Canon City on Hwy 115 and ends up in Victor. Both are great drives. You technically don't need 4x4 for either, even though they are both marked as 4x4.
I hate this road I never go down it, eventhough it is so pretty. Ok I will take that back I will go down the road but only if I am coming from Cripple Creek to Canon City. However, I love the video great job
Are you and idiot, it is easier to go up the road than down it, you have gravity on your side to slow you down, quite the opposite going down. The sad thing about this video is that it doesn't show the road from the a distance. If you ever wanna talk Shelf Road Party holler at me!!!!
Nice video. I like the angle. This road was a lot of fun. My family and I looked forward to it during our trip to Colorado the second week of June 2007.
I never go up shelf road for this reason.. I want to be on the hill side. Fun meating cars comming the other way. Can you imagine taking this with a stage, which is what it was built for.
I hated this road as a kid and now it isn't so bad.

I am guessing most of the trail/roads you take were first wagon/rail roads?
davemoore52266 1 year ago
@davemoore52266 Most of them were either wagon trails across mountain passes, or simply mining trails to get to the gold mines.

In 1989, I drove this road when it was muddy and slushy, that was a real heartstopper.

Looks like you've got to be a little brave and crazy... but the view's awesome. Remember: No texting while driving!!!

This route looks very similar to the "Phantom Canyon" route from Canon City to Silver Cliff. . so much fun !!
Smashinz2002 1 year ago
@Smashinz2002 Yup, it runs parallel to it; they are just a few miles apart...if that, even...

Haha, this was actually before Rio's time. But the camera is actually mounted on the door with suction cups so I can drive and focus on the road :)

"Offroad Shelf Road" Haha, its not off-road its on a road... The shelf road evidently. I've driven worse in a civic. Scenery looks awesome though!

A bit of snow always make this road a bit more interesting. :) We have taken it a few times when Cripple Creek was in a white out condition.

Is this road too technically difficult? It doesn't look too bad, but it's hard to really tell from the video. Awesome footage, by the way. :)
