Huntsman, who also sings with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, also referenced Nibley's 1939 Ph.D dissertation at the University of California-Berkeley on the Roman New Year Games. In content, he added, Nibley's breadth and depth of scholarship was uncanny.
I would love to have religion and belief in this type of god, but its hard for me to imagine such a jealous entity would punish us for not believing in him and following his word but would not provide any rational reason for us to conclude, using the brain he provided us, that he wanted this for us. I cannot see how I can know what his will is, all I see are a plethora of claims by a plethora of belief systems. How could you be expected to pick the right one, lest you be damned?
@jjjooommm222 Thinking about a God who wants to punish or damn all those who do not believe in him (or not in the right way) is not a good starting point, I believe.
Rationality is something different for each of us, depending on our upbringing and experiences. But our brains have many more capacities, not only in the rational sphere. Parts of our brains are very intuitive.
So, my suggestion to you is very simple: Pray to God, ask him whether he exists and what he wants you to do.
What do Mormons believe will happen to you if you commit suicide? I know its a morbid question, but I had a friend who recently did so. I am just trying to figure it out.
I personally do not know of any specific doctrine on that off of the top of my head, and there can be many factors that come into play for why one might do so. I think there are some things we need to leave up to the Lord to decide. Again, just my opinion.
Although it is wrong to take ones own life, a person who commits suicide may not be responsible for his or her acts. Only God can judge such a matter.
Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has said: Obviously, we do not know the full circumstances surrounding every suicide. Only the Lord knows all the details, and he it is who will judge our actions here on earth."
"When he does judge us, I feel he will take all things into consideration: our genetic and chemical makeup, our mental state, our intellectual capacity, the teachings we have received, the traditions of our fathers, our health, and so forth
Ok, thank you lds9999 for answering my question. Even if its hard for me to see there is some kind of God that let people suffer. I wish I could have faith as you do.
Thanks. I'm a bit perplexed when people say the temple is a "secret" place. I've been LDS since I was 8, and I've been going to LDS meetings for a very long time -- weekly sunday meetings, semi-annual stake conferences and general conferences, stake priesthood meetings, leadership meetings, etc etc. As regards the temple, the message I get in church year after year is "come to the temple" - this is the invitation to new members and not-so-new members alike. WHERE is the secret in THAT??
He did not say this to belittle others but simply said this so that we do not end up sharing those things which are sacred to us with those who are not yet capable of understanding them. Furthermore, all things in the temple are considered the meat of the gospel. No one would feed meat to an infant. It could possibly kill them! So it could also damage someone not yet prepared to know about the temple covenants.
i will never forget my first experience of the temple. what an amazing place ful of peace and love. it feels like u can leave all ur worldly troubles and thoughts behind. as soon as u enter the worldly things dnt matter.
Umm no offense, but in case you don't know, that's not exactly how the devil works. He's not a very "light" and "feel good" person. Do you even know anything about Joseph Smith, or do you just listen to your preacher?
This is where I feel peace
That sweetly restores my soul
Here, the Spirit doth increase
And instructs me in role

Nice comment. I always correct people when they say its a secret place. I inform them it's a sacred place.

I agree. The savior himself also said this,
Do not cast your pearls before swine.
He did not say this to belittle others but simply said this so that we do not end up sharing those things which are sacred to us with those who are not yet capable of understanding them.
