  • I'm only 21, wasn't around when this song came out..but it makes me dream of when I was a young child, happy and peaceful, none the less

  • ikona

  • I'm absolutely in love with the way he rolled the r's in the words grenadine and straining. It's those little things in his songs that make me absolutely adore his music.

  • My gentle teacher.

  • Master piece pure and simple!!!!!!!!!!

  • I loved this guy so much in the 60's, and this was one of my favorites. Such gorgeous imagery. I learned to play this note-for-nore on the guitar, but could never sing it like he did.

  • Donovan is the man. to the douche faces that have the gaul to say he is a Dylan clone I shout a resounding FUCK THEEE!

  • IT ENDS!

    IT ENDS!

  • This is really excellent. Another gem by Donovan.

  • what can a person ask more than this ? so pure !

  • emmis! this song is shadoobee! Been listening to it since the day I bought the record! This song is at a par with Malcom Lowry's Under the Volcano. Not in magnitude of course but in feeling.I'm shakin in my shoes in Mexico!

  • I love this one. The lyrics are incredible.

  • i think donny got phosphorous confused with something else.....

  • I got to meet Donovan after a show and thank him for his great songs which I absorbed all those years ago. He was still great. He played solo. I agree, this is one of his best.

  • Straining my eyes for a sur-facing submarine...

One of the best strangest performers.

  • Just been told I'm wrong ~ phosphorus appears in the Elements Song by Tom Lehrer.

Sand and Foam is still one of my favourite Donovan songs

  • This is poetry with a beautiful melody. Must be the only song with the word "phosphorus".

Also one of the few songs which conjures up beautiful images in the mind.

  • Microscopic circles in the fluid of our sight.

  • Expensive Heat.

  • This is possibly one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. I can totally relate to the lyrics as well. Maybe not swimming in phosphorescent water tripping balls (sadly) but definitely remembering a moment you spent with a lost love. Gets me every time.

  • Who was playing with Donovan on this cut? The chick playing the twelve string Martin guitar. What was her name? I think it was the same chick that took him to Mexico. She played on Sand and Foam, as well.

  • I have been thinking of this song for awhile. It is one of his best. Thanks for posting the lyrics; they are some of the most poetical I've ever heard. Your images are very well chosen.

  • Donovan was so ahead of his time with this song. He accomplished what bands today are still trying to copy.

  • John Mellencamp just ripped off this song for his "new" song "Someday the Rains Will Fall." At least he stole from the best.

  • you're pink floyd

  • @EmilySmeemFish Not really. You just aren't working hard enough to find it.

  • wow....never hurd this song before.....LOVE.

  • What an amazing poet!

  • "The simple act of an oar stroke put diamonds on the sea..."

As Donovan places them in the mind with this fine, fine melody and lyric.

  • Adore this one of Donovan's. Magic lyrics - good poetry.

  • I like all the "r" flips.

  • that metalfuq is weird

  • great number, lyrical poetic justice that Donovan unabashedly exceeded at....as in...".sur-face-ing" submarine.1.34....he could take you places, with lyrics

  • @locheelad2

"Poetic license," not poetic justice. :)

  • that last comment was graphic..........

    i like this song alot.

  • love it

  • Gems like this are meant to be discovered over and over again :)

  • .....you're right. Added to my playlist.

Thank you for the share, oh Sacred One.

  • this is donovan tooooo, nice. i like this one alot.

  • It seems theres at least one song like this on most of his albums. That is an all or mostly acoustic song thats really serious and mysterious sounding. There my favorite ones.

  • It's a haunting tune that you want to carry in your mind forever

  • awesome tune! a real gem

  • no, it was to convey grasshoppers creaking in the velvet jungle night.

  • Was his Scottish accent coming through or was he trying to sound Mexican by rolling his Rs?

  • lorjim58 can you post Age of Treason

    Thanks

  • Fantastic song and mood - his honesty throughout his life is unsurpassed; he beckoned ridicule and dared them to bringit on - meeting it with love, love, love!

  • He sounds somehow different in this song...

I like the tune and feel, though. It's mellow and relaxing.

  • Donovan wrote this song in Puerto Vallarta 1966. Beautiful
