  • It has always been known as the Alexandrov (Red,Soviet,Russian) Choir/Ensemble, but worldwide people still recognize it by its former name, the Red Army Choir. The shortenend name for it is along the lines of Alexandrov Russian Army Ensemble just as 20 years ago it was the Alexandrov Soviet Army Ensemble. No reason to get heated over it ANY of you lol.

  • LONG LIVE MOTHER RUSSIA , but for Your own money.....

  • The guy who's playing kinda looks like George Bush ...

    HOLY SHIT!

  • this is my jam

  • LONG LIVE MOTHER RUSSIA!!GRETHINGS FROM SERBIA!!!

  • @ramsesine That is a mistake. Since 1991 is known as A.V. Alexandrov Russian army song and dance ensemble. The Soviet Union no longer exists and neither the Soviet Army.

  • @Andron3 Really ?

Their name from their own WEB site:

The Alexandrov Academic Song and Dance Ensemble of the Russian Army

    Their Official Name from Wikipedia:

A.V. Alexandrov Russian army twice red-bannered academic song and dance ensemble

    Known World wide as:

Red Army Choir or Red Army Chorus

    Earlier names:

Red Army Song Ensemble of the M. V. Frunze Red Army Central House

Red Army Choir Red Army Red-Bannered Song and Dance Ensemble of the USSR

  • @ramsesine Really'! The Alexandrov Academic Song and Dance Ensemble of the Russian Army. Currently there is neither the USSR nor the Red Army.

  • May i ask why Russian soldiers in 2004 are wearing soviet uniforms and playing for the pope??? this event is full of contradictions... seriously i am more confused now than i ever could have been before.

  • @S0VIETS0LDIER this is not the Soviet uniforms

  • @S0VIETS0LDIER LOL Soviet uniforms, what a noob. Those are Russian uniforms

  • Those boys are smoking! Good stuff!

  • who does this guy think he is, Jimmi Hendrix of the balalaika? yeah he's pretty good

  • This is awesome! I love that balalaika spin move.

  • And the Pope says: "this orthodox guys aren't looking like little red devils, after all..."

  • Aaai aii olga :D.

  • Great. Bravo!

  • all that was missing was a bottle of vodka ... and some silly drunken dancing with the pope

  • I can listen to this stuff all night!

  • absolutely fantastic. Russian musicians have to be among the worlds best.

  • jimi hendrixov

  • ahh, the reds. you can't stay mad at em. good music.

  • I like the music a lot - the costumes are a little weird

  • God I love this... I watch this over and over again! BALALAIKA ROCKS!!

  • 2:22 je

"red army playing for the pope", sounds weird.

and yep, most russian folk and known song dont say anything about communism because they are earlier, the talk about peasants small stories, cossacks, etc.

    PD:poor trotsky

  • Да, ВЕЧНО. Славное нот. Независимо, социального присоединения. Кто заботит о созиализме и коммунизме когда мы слушаем к славному нот!! ИСПРАВЬТЕСЬ??

(sorry for sloppy translations) haha - -

    Spaciba ! Robert

  • Damn... can't we just enjoy this fabulous music by talented musician? stop with all the communism stuff.... (WHO CARES)... it's men singing and playing music, having a great time doing it.

    Thanks

  • Всё проходящее, а музыка вечна!

  • Any bigger and their caps could be helicopter landing pads!!! LOL!

  • Whatever you say, i find the music is fantastic, the musicians are great, it's a marvellous happening, look at the face of the orchestra-member behind the solist, who is funny enough to do a trick too...

  • Does it make sens for an idiot like you, to call musicians communists? Uniforms they wear are just tradition in the choir, since it was founded in those times. They just sing songs, play music... enjoy it and don't try to act smart - you fail at it.

  • The thing is, they just performed song. That's it. It is Red Army choiur, but it's not Red Army, it's the name... if you see Medieval Teutonic music Trupe, that doesn't mean they are from Medieval period... they just sing those songs... thats it. And pope simply liked the music, thats it.

It's like saying let's not teach people in School about history of USSR because it's symbol of comunism, and in Poland it's quite obvious symbol that we hate. But that doesn't mean we have to ban history books

  • about comunism... So seriously, your question is silly.

  • Who said anything about banning any books?? You're blowing things WAY out of proportion. This isn't a group that happens to be based on something but unrelated to it. This group came from the Red Army. Therefore, it is presumable that they represent the Red Army. If the Pope likes the music, fine, but I just find it interesting that the group that represents being anti-"beourgois" is performing to a highly structured Church.

  • It was a metaphonre... *palmfaces* They represent Red Army? "group that represents being anti-"beourgois"? Just read what you just wrote and go away, please dont ask stupid questions... They are just damn musicians, their group was formed in Red Army, but they are normal men, with their own religious beliefs, just singing songs of those times and those songs are simply beautifull thats all what matters and thats the point.

  • What the heck are you looking for, conspiracy theories? I'm polish, I hate socialism and communists, but I like listen to Soviet anthem for instance, because its simply esthetic experience. I like the sound, I enjoy the music, that's it and I don't care about political context, likewise those musicians... Non of them is communist, non of them is anti-religious, or represents anything. They wear those costumes to give historical impression. They sing songs composed in USSR, and...

  • ... wear adequate outfits! Beside there are many young members of choir, who joined it to sing songs and perform various army dances... you think they represent communim too? It's like saying democratic ideologist shouldn't go to medieval museum beacause things in there represent monarchy. just snap out of it and enjoy the music, like all people did including pope and those musicians who didn't gave a fuck about communism that day and just had some fun.

  • 1. This is NOT the Red Army Choir. There is no such thing as a Red Army or, to be more precise, Soviet Army since the dissolution of the USSR.

    2. "lot of their songs are soviet communist songs."

I'd like you to prove your assertion by naming at least ten songs out of their repertoire which make explicit reference to communism. I bet, you won't get far beyond naming the anthem of the USSR.

    3. Therefore, it is better to keep quiet instead of exposing one's ignorance so open-heartedly.

  • It is just a renactment of some of the clothing and classical muic

  • thats actual Russian Army clothing and music is classic

  • @akschrott ;ot nasholsa uchitiel?

  • @bvdswqawe11 Знаешь - тогда нашелся один придурак кого надо было научить что он придурак.

  • @akschrott Actually, the Red Army Choir and Musical Ensemble still exists. It's definitely not regular army nor a Communist army, but they still tour and perform.

  • @akschrott You beat to it! I was about to tell him the same thing. There hasn't been a red army since 1991.

  • @akschrott Actually you are wrong. There is a Red Army Choir that exists today even after the fall of the USSR.

Do not go around calling people ignorant when you are the ignorant one.

  • @washingtonboy09 no man you're incorrect, its the alexandrov ensamble now, not the red army choir.

  • they wear uniforms of the army of Russian Federation, it's military orchestra, what does it have to do with communism?

  • @immortalx50 That, and the communists would never have set foot in the vatican, being all secularist to the point of being totally anti-religion and such...

  • Шикарно =)

  • Red army?? what Red Army?? there is only the modern Russian Army! Urraaah!!

  • Just attended their live performance; simply amazing, especially this balalaika virtuoso.

  • 2:22 Thats freak'n awesome! XD I'd like to see steve vai or someone do that! that is just great!

  • This russian guitarist owns Vai.

  • thats true

  • Ahhhh, I love the balalaika...

  • 2:22 omg :D

  • Amazing!

  • epic!

  • I'll bet the pope liked those friendly uniforms especially those religious looking hats.

  • So they should wear a burka or what are you saying?

  • Sounds so loving and christian; pope was supposed to cherish the basic christian values - love, love, love .... does he?

  • I don't know what his values are, but I'm not frightened of the red army, the pope, you or anyone else and in this country I am allowed to say so.

  • Magnifique ils sont tres fort vive la Balalaika

  • je n'arrive pas à trouver la version de Pierre Lozere "Balalaïka" pour les p'tits enfants si vous pouviez m'aider merci

  • deammm

this guy can really fast playing ^^

  • Wonderful music!! HAHAHA!

  • Can anyone tell me when the Red Army played this for the Pope

  • 6 p.m. October 15 2004.

26th anniversary of Pope John Paul II

  • @ramsesine then its not the red army because the soviet union fell apart in 1990 so they are the russian federation choir, and if you are russian then you can tell they dont have the soviet symbols on their caps

  • @thekazzak100 They are still the Red Army Choir. They still use the name but never do anything related to Communism anymore

  • Im getting a Balalaika on my B-Day

  • are they the Alexandrov choir?

  • @emilointeriapl Hi! Yes, I can tell you that these musicians are from the Alexandrov Red army choir, they kept this name because it's famous since decades!

I already was at 20 concerts (the colonel even invited me often...) of this wonderful ensemble, and I want to tell everybody that these great artists are just very lovely persons (I'm French but I speak and sing in Russian...)!!!

The balalaika soloist is Viktor Predelin.

    Best greetings from France!

  • Great song!!!

Is this Kamarinskaya a Mikhail Glinka song?

    Anyone knows???

  • It's Russian traditional song.

Beethoven used the main theme in the second movement of his 9th symphony:)

  • well in fact it is a glinka song! it was called not a song but a Kamarinskaya Fantasy.

  • In fact this music is russian traditional and Glinka made cover version :)

  • Great song!!!...

Is this Kamarinskaya a Mikhail Glinka song?

  • Accordion and Balalaika...

    very nice to hear.

I love this combination and interpretation.
