best way: don't leave things for feral rats (rattus rattus - common black rat) to eat - they'll go elsewhere. If there's food and/or nesting material you are welcoming them without realizing it. A rat can get through a hole big enough for the rat's head to pass: seal up openings, particularly the hvac chase (channel) that goes to your compressor unit outside..that's a common entry point.. check around eaves, too...
