  • petrol is always going to sound nicer but for every day use the diesel is going to give you far better MPG. The diesel engine will get 50-60mpg when its not thrashed. Petrol still gets good MPG but drops significantly when u nail it. If you know how to drive a diesel your still going to get 45-50mpg when with your foot down. I'd rather have the petrol, but this comparison is pretty shit - Alternatively remap the diesel you'll get more MPG and rival a cooper s in performance.

  • What a totally inaccurate review.

I've driven (and owned) an R56 Cooper S,Cooper and Cooper D.

There is absolutely no comparison between the D and the standard petrol Cooper; the D is much more fun to drive, more comparable to the S than the standard petrol version.

The Cooper S is a fantastic car, but the D is great too.

I've lost respect for Fifth Gear after seeing this review. If you get chance to drive all 3 cars, you will see for yourself how utterly wrong this review is

  • @BingoWingz01 diesel loser, you dont know what you're missing go dump your dirty diesel and embrace fun, nothing drives and feels like petrol engine my friend..petrol for life!!

  • Why is 5th Gear more against diesels while other Automotive publications praise it?

  • That's simple: true drivers go for petrol, period.

People who are more concerned with mpg and co2 than fun and character go for Diesel (which is like 90% of the people on the road).

  • well, it looks like you're a minority then? i guess the 10% of the rest of the road users are little boy racers then!

  • @BigUriel diesel fun? what weed are you smoking?

  • petrol cars are lighter...and also more funny.... more fun? - petrol....daily use - diesel...I want daily fun......i have petrol..diesel never more...for example Skoda Octavia mk2 TDi 77kW -- turbo hole...car is alive after 2000 rpm

  • Diesel is cheaper in America

  • i own a cooperd

  • This test is stupid. In the real world of slow town driving and traffic the diesel easily beats the petrol, not everyone buys a car to race around a track like this.

  • diesel is awesome, I love my jetta tdi it was faster than my old petrol car and its actually better to drive. Not to mention I can get up to 600 miles on a 14 gallon tank.

  • Diesiel is more expensive, slower, boring to drive etcetera. Nothing good with them. Everytime I hear a diesel, I think "What an idiot.".

  • that's fucking right.

  • greenday1209

    Fuel economy and reliablilty.

  • For sakes of Mini being a Bmw

Yes they are owned by Bmw but the engine in that diesel is a 1.6 HDI peugeot engine

    not BMW

  • If I wanted the cheap to run option it would be the diesel. Saying it does 1mpg difference in that test is silly - driving them poorly enough to get sub 20mpg in the first place is not going to happen day to day on the road or you'd be locked up. Most of the time the diesel's mpg figures aren't that far infront of the petrol but they always do better in real world conditions. The there's performance. Why buy a petrol when a £300 remap can make the diesel a LOT quicker?

  • The diesel is more expensive to begin with. You'd have to drive a very very long time to recover the initial cost of a diesel engine in your fuel savings, and from personal experience, I find the responsiveness and quietness of a petrol make a car more fun to own and drive.

  • @LMF5000

But then the diesel would be better money because you'd drive it less.

  • @kaz3kag3gaara lol, that's one way of looking at it...

  • well for the sake of 2 seconds who really cares??? as for saying the diesel is shit......hmm well it's a bmw engine and beamer diesels are very advanced and usually very reliable. also if you're going to get the petrol mini then you may as well work a bit harder make a bit of extra cash and go for the cooper s.

  • Well I think, that it is a kind of stupidity to compare and use two different drivers.

  • you're right - they're not doing the test in a scientific manner. They should have done 5 runs each in each car and then averaged the results...

  • Absolute rubbish car review. Surely if you compare a diesel and a petrol the argument is about economy, not sportiness, so why you didn't do some proper tests measuring that? Also you will never drive in town doing handbrake turns and stuff so what's the point of that "test"? That could've been a really useful comparison of petrol vs diesel engines and it wasn't, it was rubbish.

  • The only thing that was rubbish was the diesel.

  • yeah, the diesel may not be worth it stock, but you can somewhat maintain fuel efficiency, while simultaneously boosting Horsepower and Torque. The Petrol version will begin to drop in efficiency when performance goes up.

  • but you'd be adding costly peformance upgrades to an already expensive engine to bring it to a performance that is on-par with a much cheaper petrol engine, with the only advantage being fuel economy. The money you save in fuel is that which you'd have spent on the engine. And remember that diesels have turbo lag but non-turbocharged petrols don't. Also, diesels emit soot from the exhaust ("particulate matter" is soot) whilst petrols don't. And maintenance of diesels is more expensive too.

  • OK, I suppose I see your point, but I'm personally a modification freak. So, I guess it all comes down to taste.
