As a Domincan who grew up in The Heights, I believe it has absolutely changed for the worse. It is why I moved away..to give my kids a chance to grow in a crime free area, where the music is not blaring at all hours of the night, the streets are clean, and everyone has respect for the law. Unfortunately, Dominicans always want the easy way out, the "hook up", no sense of pride in their neighborhood, dirty, and with the "everyone else be dammed" attitude, because "I got mine". I lived in washington heights for one year. the day I moved in I was threatened by a group of guys on the street. As the months went on I became friends with them. This place is so lively and amazing. It's a whole different world, and I'll never forget it. I miss it, and all of the families in my building that lived for the moment. <3

I just moved into the hieghts 3 months ago. My area is still Jewish. Of course I live west of Fort Washington. I've noticed more whites have moved into my my area since I've been here.
I want to add, there has always been a divided line between the African American community and the Dominican Community. When I was growing up, I notice that the dominicans lived west of Amsterdam Avenue. They lived in the blocks with the many tenaments. African Americans lived west of Amsterdam Avenue in the Brownstones and apartment buildings. Broadway always had the most crime than the black community. We had our share of crime because of corrupt police.
I was technically raised in Washington Heights. The 1970's Washington Heights extended all the way to 145th Street on the westside. Then later, Washington Heights southern border became 155th Street. The area which I grew up was jewish, but later became dominican. Blacks start moving in this area in the 60's. The population of African Americans is significant in the southern end of Washington Heights. There is still a heavy jewish population north of 168th Street west of Broadway.

This place is not safe I went here apartment hunting to go to college in Midtown West and it is absolutely not in any way a good place to raise children... It's not even really safe to go visit at all for that matter anywhere above Morningside is dangerous. Harlem deserves the bad rep it has. I past at least 15 projects in Harlem within 30 minutes of being there

I lived in washington heights for one year. the day I moved in I was threatened by a group of guys on the street. As the months went on I became friends with them. This place is so lively and amazing. It's a whole different world, and I'll never forget it. I miss it, and all of the families in my building that lived for the moment. <3

There is, however, a lot one has to deal with when living in the heights. Most of the city is filthy, and there is tons of garbage left on the streets.ppl also often blast music in the wee hours of the morning, and good windows are a must!Unfortunately, many ppl also have no regard for personal possessions; they might extinguish their cigarette on your car, sit on your car, or lean on your car, and have no clue that what they are doing is wrong. Rent is cheap though...

I want to add, there has always been a divided line between the African American community and the Dominican Community. When I was growing up, I notice that the dominicans lived west of Amsterdam Avenue. They lived in the blocks with the many tenaments. African Americans lived west of Amsterdam Avenue in the Brownstones and apartment buildings. Broadway always had the most crime than the black community. We had our share of crime because of corrupt police.

I was technically raised in Washington Heights. The 1970's Washington Heights extended all the way to 145th Street on the westside. Then later, Washington Heights southern border became 155th Street. The area which I grew up was jewish, but later became dominican. Blacks start moving in this area in the 60's. The population of African Americans is significant in the southern end of Washington Heights. There is still a heavy jewish population north of 168th Street west of Broadway.

Excuse me, it isn't 95 percent Dominican. There is a sizable Black population on it southern border (the area that is closes to harlem). And The Jewish population is very well established around the northern west end of Washington Height. I would say about 15 percent. Also, if there are Dominicans, they are other hispanics like Puerto Ricans and Mexicans in this area as well.
