  • I want to see how they made the very first dr who theme

  • Fascinating. There is some intelligence on youtube.

What year was this recorded ?

  • @CelticProgeny the original was by delia derbyshire - without the use of a keyboard, it was all done by single note at a time oscillators being sequenced together on tape - alll the credit should go to the great delia derbyshire (it was delia's front door key on the piano) i don't know why they aren't giving her the credit she deserves, i find it extremely saddening...

  • geniuz

  • I know Delia would not approve, but it's better than the over produced orchestral sonic soup of the new Dr Who!

  • Wow! Polyphonic with eight whole notes :o) How times change huh?

  • Technical speak: A bit of wobble....

  • @digitalbroadcaster Ooh! So THAT's where "wibbley wobbley timey wimey" comes from :P :D

  • Completely relevant ideas even with the synthesis of today, just with different technology. Though I never thought of using a vocoder for any other purpose but vocals, and in here- he uses it as expression to the volume and tonality of the synth patch that he's playing. Brilliant. Howell is truly genius.

  • 4:13 makes a good dub siren there! mash up the dance

  • Wooow! Respect!!

  • He's using an ARP Odyssey as a friggin metronome. #jealous

  • @Psychlist1972 Yeah, it's sitting next to a CS-80. What else should it do?

  • yea

never throw out anything at the radiophonic workshop....

until the bbc threw out EVERYTHING

    BASTARDS!!!!!!!

  • wow.. this is so awesome.

Vintage analog sounds so fucking nice... spectrasonics gets close.

  • This is excellent historically, showing an older recording studio with vintage synths.

  • Wow, hand mixing stuff. Impressive! I think this was the best Dr Who theme so far.

  • To angry of Mayfair, google Tim Whitnall to see what that" total twat" has been up to in the last 25 years, I imagine he has achieved more than you ever have,

  • @maisiegd08 THAT'S Tim Whitnall?! Of Mike & Angello?! I didn't recognise him!

  • i used this video so i could get a start as to somewhat how you should play it yay!

  • Cool video. I find myself remembering the days of synths without patch memories and wondering how many times in my 43 years I have heard this theme.

  • Is the best there is. Were can I get it?????

  • Sound on Sound site ads (one up at the moment), Craigslist and Gumtree! Some synth repairers sell reconditioned vintage synths, dearer but less likely to go wrong. CS60 is a smaller version. The CS80 is VERY difficult to service. If you haven't got £3,000 and another £1,000 for an odyessy, there's now softsynth versions. Some say you can get CS80 sounds on the Yamaha AN1X.

  • The old theme is better

  • Peter Howell had the coolest job o the planet!!

  • This video is PRICELESS !

  • this is by far to this date my favourite EVER DW theme

  • lol, "the bum-ba-bum" sound...so technical lol

  • "that music you were just hearing is the signature tune to Dr. Who"

    Noooo....really!?....It's so unique, I don't know HOW I didn't notice!

    ...what a bell-end...

  • I want their Studio.....

  • Wow, the presenter is a right idiot!

  • Great clip 5*****

    D...:)

  • doooo reee oooo 3:57

7:56 look at him smile. He really loves his job

Crazy how they use all that equipment back then when a $250 computer with $80 software could do the same thing in less time

  • 3:44 - Wonderful how Murray Gold omits this essential piece of Doctor Who in his current theme isn't it? Arrgh!!! This is the best part of Doctor Who.

  • EPIC, EPIC theme tune! Really great to see him putting it together

  • very advanced for the 60's

  • Yeah same, the vocoder bit was really interesting

  • love those synths!

  • @ 3:56 Thats some funny shit! I love it.

  • Briliant!

  • that man is a genius

  • @xxmrcoolmanxx no delia derbyshire was the genius

  • That would be a nice job to have.

  • Reporter is a knob, got real bored around 5:21, would of loved to hear more about that vocal bit.

  • Anyone knows If this is part of a documentary?

  • The Doctor Who Theme was composed by Ms Delia Derbyshire, but was never credited to her because of the sexist culture at the BBC at the time.

  • Ron Grainer composed the Doctor Who Theme and turned over his orchestral work to the BBC Radiophonic Workshop where Delia Derbyshire

  • That was awesome! I'm a knob twiddler myself and found that the Odyssey sounds a lot like my Arp Axxe and now I too can play Doctor Who. I don't think that the guy interviewing him knew much abut music gear, but that made it all that more interesting, because in order to have the synth mastery of BBC music composers, well that's really what the interview was about. Well done and I'm adding to my favourites.

  • This is signal processing as a means unto itself. The technology dominates and obliterates the theme composition. The atmosphere of the original arrangement by Delia Derbyshire had a darker more visceral mood and stood alone as a work of art. This is just plastic.

  • I remember seeing this clip when it originally aired. That presenter's "career" has long finished and he was a total twat, but Peter Howell is still going strong.

    Talented bloke he is too.

  • lol when he does the melody with glide on the arp and the presenter says and a little wobble in the end

  • haha, now he's producing dubstep

    >;- D

  • the guys a twat lol. looked totally disinterested in what the composer was saying.

  • He is a complete tool indeed, and in contrast Peter Howell comes across as the most together, friendly and proffesional person in the history of the planet.

  • @kevpunk he's not the composer delia derbyshire was with ron grainer - find out how the original was made, this is childsplay in comparison

  • 3:56 Hahahaha!

  • "... the sound of the Tardis taking off, was actually with somebodys door key scraping down a piano string" coool! :D

  • I've tried recreating these patches on softsynths (CS-80v and Oddity). It sounds somewhat close. Peter Howell had a Jupiter-6 in there as well apparently.

  • DOCTER WHOS AWSOME LOL

  • 3:51 - DOO WEE OOOOOH!

  • He didn't explain the tardis sound at all, there's no such thing as a piano string! Or is there? I have no idea what he meant when he said that.

  • Inside a piano is what is essentially a harp - with strings. Wooden felt covered hammers - one for each note - hit the string when you hit the keys. The tardis take off sound was a key being run over the piano strings and then reversed. I've made the noise myself when dissmanteling an old piano which went in the skip, Gr8 fun and hard work...

  • Yes there is such a thing as a piano string..

  • To peter howell ...brilliant.

To the annoying, un-interested presenter, bet he's sorry now:)

  • He who controls the CS-80, controls the universe. Still an awesome synth.

  • @pmgodfrey I think that should be changed to "He who can pick up the CS-80....."

  • lol yup...

  • 5 weeks!?

    he was skivin'!

  • great

  • Not impressed by the vocoder was he (5:19)?

  • Yeah I know what the hell was up with that. the prick, lol.

  • Great stuff :-)

  • i thot delia derbyshire wrote this peice?

  • old times are gonna live again... by hearing 'your great sound' ...

    Dr.Who... never forgotten!!

Thank you very much, with love Marilyn

    ****5

  • so motherfuckin' amazing!!!

  • Fun stuff. A gem of a piece of sci-fi music.

  • fantastic sound

  • I don't know how to describe what I feel when I hear the Dr Who theme. Seeing he creation of it left me feeling.... in the moment.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • This is crazy shit!!

  • Delia's Version IS WAY BETTER!

  • I love the original but i think this one certainly has it's qualitys..

I love the orbital version! hahahaha.

  • this is legendary stuff!!!

    thx for sharing

  • Very nice, Thanks for sharing.

  • OH GOD I WISH I WAS BACK THERE...

  • I also own a Roland SVC-350 Vocoder (using a Korg Poly-800 Synthesizer as it's carrier input) and you can listen to it (them) here: youtube. com/watch?v=6fACcgn0ZZc and here: youtube. com/watch?v=JcMGsqrrecc

  • Hello, I've posted the video on switchedonsynthesizer.blogspot . com

  • Dream job!

But do you have to have the posh accent to get in!

  • The BBC Radiophonic Workshop closed down in 1996 regrettably :(

  • I think it finally went in 1998 not 1996.

  • well...call me a nerd...but that old-school

techno is the shit!! Props out to Africa Baambaata, Kraftwerk, Cabaret Voltaire, and Suicide!!

  • "Is the high-pitched one... the DUH-IH-UH!"

    xD

  • Them old synths were alot more flexible in them days tho..

  • 128 note polyphony? I didn't know an analog synth with more than 16 voices (Andromeda A6)...

  • My Casio SK-1 has 4 note polyphony WOOT

(yeah i know totally not analog, but retro, yes)

     =^___^=

  • My piano has 88 note polyphony.

  • Great, now just grow 78 more fingers and you'll be set!

  • Nah, I got a right foot.

  • what year is this from?

  • Great video. And how much fun could you have with a vocoder?! hehe

  • Excellent! Thanks for sharing...

  • wow where can i buy one of thos high tech marvels

  • They're hard to come by, but Arturia do software to emulate the CS-80 and I'm sure the rest are around somewhere

  • I don't know why but at 3:57 makes me laugh

  • It's funny cuz I burst out laughing at that part and then read your comment.....ohhhh my God Im laughing so hard now my side is hurting...bwaaaaa haaaaaaaa

  • AWESOME

  • The BBC hasn't changed much has it!

  • AAAH.... I love old synthesizers... you can come close these days with digital copies... but these are priceless. ARP ODYSSEY!!!!

  • pretty good, but no mention of delia derbyshire :(

  • Yeah, I thought he could have given some mention to Delia. Awesome vid though.

  • yeah i was kinda surprised at that too. but at least in the end she did get her royalty checks everytime the show is shown. honestly they can try all they want but they will never touch her original recording. no to mention when she did it was completely and totaly amazing as well

  • thank you!

  • My favourite line "this divice here looks rather old" jokes

  • Yep. Definitely porn.

  • this is basically porn to me, thanks for uploading it!

  • Hahaha I know what you mean. I love geeky tech stuff with studios and synths.

  • Brilliant!

  • It's OK!!!

  • Fantastic!!! :D

  • yes yamaha cs-80 synth from my dreams.
