At 0:47 the girls first see “Sunset Sam.” The shot of this absurd character, combined with the music chord just then, creates a ghastly “WTF” moment that is brilliant video-making. Sam is so outlandish yet casual that he is hilarious, especially because this is how things in Hollywood really are. I myself was born in Hollywood. As long as you don’t deal drugs, or expose your genitals in public, ANYTHING GOES! The more I study this video, the more it impresses me. Thanks again for uploading it!
Yes, I’ve always enjoyed this funny satire on L.A. culture. Lucy is from Compton (i.e. she’s Black), Ramona from Brooklyn (she’s a Jew or a Puerto Rican) and Sam is from Arizona (a whacked-out white boy). All of them hook up in the surreal world of Hollywood, or Venice Beach, where it is typical to see someone wearing skivvies in public like the quasi-gay “Sam” in the video. Overall this song is quintessentially L.A. -- which was exactly Nesmith’s intention. Thanks for uploading it. :)
This sort of thing actually happens out there.I remember walking down the Sunset Strip back in the late Seventies, strolling past this sort of a fellow wearing hot-pants with a certain part of his anatomy dangeling down out of his daisy-dukes cutoffs.Me,in my mid-twenties back then, well this fellow looks at me square in the eyes and sees the apitomy of horror on my face, and the freak just starts laughing. It was a sight that scared the frickin hell out of me;I'll never forget it.I should have ran!
I remember this tune blasting on the radio's by our house when I was a little kid, the girls were hot looking that hung around, funny, it was like yesterday.
Ever since I saw this at age 4 in 1982, I thought this was the most awesome shit- It still rocks to this day, unlike this Ke$ha and Lady Gaga shit they feed us on the radio! Fuck that noise, the 80's were the BOMB!
@TheJoesousa True. Them son of a gun honky's Frank Zappa and Mike Nesmith gave us brothers a style we could combine with Rick James in music that would live on forever.
Definitely has that late-'70s look to it. The reason: this video was made in April 1979, while the song was recorded in October 1978. Overall...I like it. Especially the blond girl Ramona (hubba-hubba).
I though I had hallucinated this song back in the '80s...I'm glad I was wrong - it's a kickin' little tune. And I like how it made Sunset Blvd. look like a hip place to be and to find yourself...in a silly, sarcastic way, of course.
Who doesn't love Michael chewing up the scenery in the final chorus, all the while getting sprayed by a mist machine, and then spitting and looking into the viewer's eyes? Fantastic.
For some reason this video scares me. I don't know if it's the fact that Mike has a beard (which I'm still not used to), or the way he's singing the song, or whatever. I love the song though, very catchy :)
I wanna find the 20something people whom dislike this video. This is the greatest freaking thing I have seen Mike Nesmith do since The Monkees! Gotta find more.....
i was watching a movie called "Timerider" on netflix, from the 80'as, and the music was by Mike Nesmith, and i remembered this video, and of course Youtube has it. YOu tube is where all the great videos from the 80's went after mtv went to crap. I love this video.
The actor playing Sunset Sam in this music video, from Michael Nesmith's movie Elephant Parts, is Steve Strong.
Michael Nesmith was one of the members of the pop music group, The Monkees. He released his epic music-movie Elephant Parts in 1981, the same year that MTV began broadcasting on cable TV. Wikipedia has a list of the first songs played on MTV, starting, of course, with Video Killed The Radio Star!
@ckeilah Except for the small fact that this was an HBO special and it won at least one Emmy. It lasts almost 60 minutes too. My favorite Laserdisc in my collection, bar none.
The song about living inside the tube is the outro for the credits and lists all the cast, some of who play multiple roles (the teen in Elvis Drugs is the ballerina,. carhop and MC lady in Name That Drug and the winner is also the director in the gas price sketch and the LDCC spokesman Don Hideoso) just to name a few
@rgbobojr sorry to say but this predated mtv and that is not hulk hogan, hulk hogan is 6 foot 7. in the scene with the two women and sunset sam going down the street he is maybe six inches taller than the girls. do the math, just because he is blonde and works out does not equal out to hulk hogan
Although you're right that it isn't the Hulkster, you're wrong about it predating MTV. It was in rotation for awhile in around '85. It was a part of Nesmith's video album, Elephant Parts.
@twenty3enigma 1981, HBO special. By 1985 the first generation of VJs were being slowly replaced and LIVE AID aired. You may have seen the cuts on USA Night Flight by 1982. This song reached the bottom of the Billboard Top 40 and it was propelled by the special, not really the LP Infinite Rider...Michael Nesmith is now in his 70s and he was a prominent force behind the creation of the music video form we know today. Unfortunately his production company, Pacific Arts closed after legal troubles.
@unixengineer I just read a biography about Nez that claimed that Sunset Sam was Hulk Hogan. What was funny is I had that argument with my mom in like 1985, and she vehemently denied it was him. As I grew older, I realized it wasn't, but then it got reported in print. I currently don't think it is, but if it's in print, it must be true, right? :)
Seriously, anyone with anything bad to say about this can suck it. What a great piece of Americana. Some facts:
1) The bodybuilder was a wrestler by the name of Steve Strong (Steve Cepello)
2) Cepello is now a very accomplished PAINTER(!).
3) Michael Nesmith is a bad muthaf*cka
4) To the dude that said that "U Can't Touch This" by M.C. Hammer was inspired by this: wtf? That was a SAMPLE of Rick James' "Superfreak".. this song in fact sounds inspired by "Brick House" by the Commodores!
People worry about doing something and looking stupid. You can do nothing and look stupid so you might as well do something. It may not be any better to be proactivly stupid but it is atleast more fun.
@MrManueleh And Mike is pretty darn good at it! If you are just warching the single bits you really should get the Elephant Parts video. It's a work of ART.
I didn't see Art in the end credits but his works were reduced to 4.99/lb earlier in the show...
Michael Nesmith was not Gay when he was with the Monkee's,but became a born again bisexual sometime in the eighties after he started becoming friendly with Paul Lynde and Charles Nelson Reilly.
I've always wondered what what Michael was trying to tell us. With lyrics like ...the light behind their eyes blew each others cover, they were all from the same place, and they saw their brother Sunset sam. Add those lyrics to the fact that the light reflected in Mikes sunglasses changes from white to red as he passes his hand in front of his face. Things that make you go HMMmmmm ...!
Wow, does this ever bring back memories! One of the very first music videos I saw as a kid. It was years before MTV was available in my area. I saw it on HBO, back when they used to show shorts (musical and otherwise) inbetween movies.
Not only did he pioneer music videos but he was a prophet. Sunset Sam looks just like Hulk Hogan. Four years later, Hulkamania was rampant through wrestling. Nesmith seems to always be ahead of the game. He put out an enhanced CD in 1994, this guy just knows how to make great investments.
@kencoa : You're amazingly close. Sunset Sam is a former professional wrestler by the name of Steve Strong, who at one time was the tag team partner of Jesse "The Body" Ventura, who at the time was a bleach blonde Cali wrestler like Hulk Hogan :D
I have been wondering about this song for years but never knew the frickin name of it. Don't remember that it was ever on MTV, but I remember seeing the video from time to time....and yeah, once it's in your head...it is there for good...lol
What a trip to see the old late 70s version of Hollywood Blvd....it's changed so much since this was made, and frankly it hasn't always been for the better.
@patton303 Haha me too. I saw Elephant parts a million times. When I was a kid my dad would fast forward through 'Elvis Drugs' and 'Name That Drug". When he finally let me watch them I laughed my ass off. It was like discovering Elephant parts all over again!
@luckymutt: Yep, Nesmith was the "douche" with the stupid looking hat. And while the Monkees were a definitely a corporate-created Beatles cash-in, Nesmith was very much a real musician and songwriter -- he wrote "Different Drum" for Linda Ronstadt, among other songs.
wow this is the first time I ever seen this video. what a very clever video. where has this video been hiding I thought I seen almost every video made from the 80's.
@sunlitrain The video that cracked me up was the nuclear thing! "Wo! You don't wanna drop one of these babies!!" HAHA!! I haven't seen that for over 20 years but I remember that line!
This guy is a genuis. Must be that born in Dallas Texas genetic class blood in him. Dallas Texas seems to bring out the best performers in music like Sly Stone and many others.
It seems that everyone likes this song, and video. THAT"S GREAT BECAUSE I LOVE IT TO DEATH !!!!!! Mike should have gotten ALL of the video awards for this production.
It's a great song, but an even greater video. i love how well crafted it is. Moments llke Sam's first reveal (behind the guitar-playing boarder) and Ramona catching up with Sam and Lucy show what a smart piece of filmaking this is.
@WatchVenusSpa Sorry not Hulk Hogan. Sunset Sam was played by Stephen Cepello. His name given in the cast and crew list from Elepant Parts is Steve Strong, he was in fact a wrestler - he was Jessie Ventura"s tag team partner.
@bolt68 This song was also on New Zealand's TV back when we only had two channels. I could not believe that TVNZ would allow such craziness to be seen in those conventional times. Great to see "Lucy and Ramona" one more time!
This is one of the early songs played ALOT of MTV... when the actually played music videos. Loved it at the time.

What a trip to see the old late 70s version of Hollywood Blvd....it's changed so much since this was made, and frankly it hasn't always been for the better.

HOLY shit...
I watched this a hundred times when I was a kid... Elephant Parts was my fav!
patton303 1 year ago
@patton303 Haha me too. I saw Elephant parts a million times. When I was a kid my dad would fast forward through 'Elvis Drugs' and 'Name That Drug". When he finally let me watch them I laughed my ass off. It was like discovering Elephant parts all over again!

This is one of the best songs from the 80's, and the best EARLY days of MTV. Thanks for posting this video.

Wow...and I thought Nesmith was just a corporate pawn, beatles rip-off whore with the Monkeys. This is a freakin' riot!
While in the Monkeys, was he the douche that wore the took? That would make this even better.
luckymutt 1 year ago
@luckymutt Nesmith was the only real muscian in the monkey's. He has recorded a lot of solo music.
brusselstarlight 1 year ago
@luckymutt: Yep, Nesmith was the "douche" with the stupid looking hat. And while the Monkees were a definitely a corporate-created Beatles cash-in, Nesmith was very much a real musician and songwriter -- he wrote "Different Drum" for Linda Ronstadt, among other songs.

You should watch his entire comedy music video, "Elephant Parts." This was my favorite, but the whole thing is pretty amusing.

It's a great song, but an even greater video. i love how well crafted it is. Moments llke Sam's first reveal (behind the guitar-playing boarder) and Ramona catching up with Sam and Lucy show what a smart piece of filmaking this is.

Hulk Hogan and Mike Nesmith together!!!
WatchVenusSpa 1 year ago
@WatchVenusSpa Sorry not Hulk Hogan. Sunset Sam was played by Stephen Cepello. His name given in the cast and crew list from Elepant Parts is Steve Strong, he was in fact a wrestler - he was Jessie Ventura"s tag team partner.

This song also got lots af radio play in New Zealand in the eighties. Once this song's in your head, its there for good.
bolt68 1 year ago 15
@bolt68 This song was also on New Zealand's TV back when we only had two channels. I could not believe that TVNZ would allow such craziness to be seen in those conventional times. Great to see "Lucy and Ramona" one more time!
