  • can u make an instructional video on how to make one?

  • can you loop them? I wonder if you could create wire recorder echo effects

  • @sleestack808 ; No that would not be possible because the system doesn't use capstan but the wire is pulled by the pickupreel.

  • Amazing!!!

  • A truly amazing bit of footage a very pleasant piece of music.

    thanks for sharing :)

  • the song is "September in the rain" by the way. Reminds me quite a lot of the George Shearing version - minus the vibraphone.

  • @BeJi74

I don't think it is "September in the Rain", it sound quite alike, but the gay introducing the band says that it's a composition of the pianist.

  • I wonder what the Guy is saying at the beginning. I wish I spoke French...

    The song is great.

  • @Dylpickleh

He is introducing the band. I don't know exactly what he says, but he names each of the members and says which instrument he plays, and then says something about the author of the song. The song is not "September in the Rain", at least from what I get of what he says, the pianist composed it.

  • Great video. I wonder what the tune is...its very catchy

  • Really good quality sounds better then this computer recording we have now what if that recording was feed to the wire recorder direct instead of a crystal mic.

  • How is it better than a digital recording? I appreciate it has a pleasing aesthetic quality, but a faithful reproduction it is not.

  • Its real no over dubs or pro tools, todays recordings are so far removed from faithful repro. I remeber the switchfrom analog to digital and a year or so later they come out with tech that sounds like analog very dumb a lot of work to get to the same place

  • Roughly what year would this be from.??..it's brilliant!

  • must be 1950 -1953

  • Wasn't it quite dated by that time? When did they go out of fashion? That wire must have been a hassle if it broke. Did they solder it or what? Was the quality better thanmag tape when it came into use?

  • One of my recorders has been first purchased April 1952. If the wire snaps you simply knot them together again. The quality of all the wires I transferred till now was remarkable. They cannot suffer from sticky shed syndrome.

  • airplanes used them until the 70's I think

  • Awesome! What brand wire recorder is this? I need to pick one up to transfer some old wires. The Webster Chicago one sounds horrible compared to this and the wires keep tangling & breaking on it.

  • This mechanism is used in several brands of wire recorders. I think it is a Wireway or Silvertone. To improve the quality I took the signal directly from the playback head an used a transistorized amplification. A wire recorder has to be well aligned mechanical to prevent the snapping and tangling of the wire.

  • Hey thanks a bunch! I'll try that. Do you think this will work if I connect the wire playback head directly to the aux inputs on my amp? Or does the magnetic wire playback head audio signal need to be connected to a pre-amp before being connected to the aux input. Or, can I just connect it to the magnetic phono cartridge inupt? I use a Harman Kardon hk 825.

  • The Phono input will work fine. Use an equalizer to correct the RIAA frequency responce.

  • Very cool!

I just picked up a very clean Webcor 181 wire recorder. Its great to see / hear one working properly. It was probably pretty damn exciting technology back in the day!

    Thanks for posting it.

  • amazing! anychance a mp3/wav of this can be obtained?
