The great thing about this work is its equilibrium. There is perfect balance between the beautifully animated "staccatissimo" passages, with their depiction of rain, and the sustained sections. And by the way, I love the marimba at 3:30.
Great piece. I was lucky enough to catch a performance of this in London a few weeks ago. Knussen and the BBC Symphony playing Carter.. an experience never to forget!

That sounds like a great experience! Knussen is a fine conductor and seems to have a real connection to Carter's music.
