it fell of from another car infront of Massa, this was 10 seconds up the road ( ahead ), so the spring was just bouncing and bouncing, then it hit massa, quite shocking....
thank god felipe's recovery is going well, i wish felipe all the best for the karting event he is taking part in in november, and wish to see felipe back fighting at the front of the grid in f1. FORZA FELIPE
yes but he almost lost his life, and that's not suppose to happen, he was lucky that the spring just scratched the side of the helmet and didn't go in the middle
as you can see, the spring hit the helmet, and the helmet got twisted inwards
i agree with the second part of what ur saying but the first thing u mentioned is nonsense, ofcourse he was wearing a helmet, and the spring hit him so hard his visor unattached itself on one side. a spring estimated to weigh aroung 1kg hits a driver at 170mph, now thats no joke
But I was answering a certain comment somewhere below, my comment should be right there. I don't know why it is displayed up here, where it sounds a bit stupid indeed.
Felipe Massa has woken up and made significant progress as he recovers from life-threatening injuries suffered in a crash during qualifying for the Hungarian grand prix on Saturday. The Brazilian Ferrari driver is being treated at the AEK military Hospital in Budapest.
hope he gets well enough to race again, i can see some safety changes happening to open wheeled cars in the near future especially with that young guy getting killed last week im terrible with names i think it was gp2 but i might be wrong
I have some experience Re aircraft and believe it could help aerodynamically, but bow to your knowledge- possibly depends on many other varying design factors- Aggree that your down to earth suggestions are more important than my notion though.
PS Thanks for putting up the Vid- BBC just now announced he's not life threatened but are worried about his eye injury..
o thats ok , coming on to the point i made, if they had one of those shell things, the airflow would be unstable if thats a good word, the rear wing requires as much air from the front of the car for the rear wing to work effieiently, i believe the fia can solve the problem without having to use some bubble shell, like make the visor in particular more stronger, but it was a freak accident
i'd rather bring in someone who has got a bit more speed. ironic if they draft in alonso for the round, considering renault are suspended for the next race. i know it won't happen though
That was really filthy luck. Poor Philipe-best wishes for a quick recovery.
Maybe they should bring back those windshields they had back in '70's?
A small, curved strip of 6mm Poly may have deflected the debris over his head.
So F1 fans let's write in to the controllers and suggest it. Who knows when the next incident might happen, and this could have resulted in a catastrophe if it had happened elsewhere on the track.
i doubt they would add the screen, this would ruin the downforce on all the cars horribly, then teams will have to re develop their car as a result, this is probably the most freakiest accident ever, however the FIA can force the teams to double check their cars parts, and they should get drivers to wear a helmet which the visor is made out of a more tougher material,
he is making a slow recovery according to the doctors which is good to know, i wonder whether he will be ready in time for the valencia grand prix, who knows
The page that I read said that his eye has recieved damage and the doctors can not be sure whether it will impact his sight. I doubt he will race again this season and if it does damage his sight then he may never race again.
Then there is always the factor of whether he will want to race again after seeing what can happen he may take it as a warning and decide not to carry on.
well hes at most of the racers, who knows, coz ferrari will loose out on much needed points, ferrari dont even have a 3rd driver, they might hire some young italian people, hmm mabye sebastian loeb thatd be cool or mabye a gp2 star
yeah, great to see he his beginning a slow recovery. a fractured skull though is likely to take about a minimum of 6 weeks to recover, probably longer. if it is badly damaged, pulling a helmet on over it and not to mention the stress his head will be under due to the g-forces etc, and his fitness which will now be less due to his immobility, i doubt we will see him back the rest of the season, never mind valencia. he may never race again depending on his vision also. get well soon felipe!!
Obviously it detached the visor from the helmet, an impact like that is incredible, simply dropping an Arai helmet with a caracoat visor would probably crack the visor.
I race karts and have seen visors crack just because of vibration thru corners.
the fact that it deattached the helmet pin which is believed to be 4 inches long is incredible, not only did it attach it but it hit his eyes, they the spring flew away, wrong place at the wrong time
Hey m8, a horrible fluke accident and ppl are making nasty comments? That takes the piss, had that spring gone thru his visor, he would be dead and F1 would be in turmoil.
I'm gutted for him, and I really hope he makes a speedy recovery.
Fingers crossed we see him return to the grid as soon as possible :-)
yea usually im not a fan of felipe, but this is one of those incidents that cant be laughed at, there are some people who say felipes dead on the other crash videos which i think its spiteful
oh yea btw, u need to have a good audience when uploading ur videos, look at some of the other massa hungary 09 crash videos, they got like 100,000 views overnight thats beause there was a big demand to see how massa got hit, try uploading videos about f1 mabye and try and record like the ending of the race, post it up and u should get some view as f1 has a very big target audience
very serious impact, not only did it hit massa at 200kmh but it hit him the left hand side of his face, and then after that he has a bang against the wall at 120kmh with all the blood from his face, hope he recovers
you know that i read somewhere that at this photo massa is in coma .......wow

91schumacher 2 years ago
The fact that we have not had any life threatening accidents in F1 for quite some time has left us with a false sense of security.
However safe the cars have become in crash senarios racing and then crashing at considerable speed is still extreamly dangerous.
It would not surprise me that Schumachers wife Corrina also had some say in his retirement from the sport.
Senna however great a driver he was never reaped the rewards of his greatness- Schumacher can and does.
