the rest is tough to put in order for me. i find gangs of newyork to have some incredible moments and performances that are hard to forget but the movie was also very flawed in some aspects as well.

Well, every great director has there own themes. Kubrick had a facination with sociopaths. Nicholas Ray with outsiders/loners, same with raoul walsh. Spike Lee, uses racial themes. The music, and the violence are key elements of the scorcese film.

pointless violence? martin's characters are representing certain people in our society, the violence is put in for a reason, showing how unglorifying some people in our society are. Such as the god father which romances with gangster lifestyle, in the good fellas Scorsese makes the point that gangster life is very unromantic. and that there is nothing great in living a violent lifestyle and like all of his movies
