  • I LOVE LEARNING!

    It's all so very interesting!

  • Very totally interesting for me as a artist, cartoonist, sketch artist and new upcoming animator.

Very wonderful lesson for us young artists and animators.

  • Incredibly educational and interesting! Thank you!

  • What's that program at 6:53

  • great bit of education! Thanks, buddy! ;)

  • Hey everyone on deviantART, I made theanimatorreference(dot)deviantart(dot)com if you're interested in contributing. :)

  • this video just made me want to watch the rescuers, little mermaid, aladdin, 101 dalmations and several other old disney films again.

also made me alot more interested in animation....(even though i could never draw worth crap and would never even attempt to, said interested in animation, not wanting to attempt it, music is still my forte)

  • Thank you for making this! I've always loved those old Disney movies, though some of the new ones aren't so bad. They tend to be worse, but you come to expect that. Ever since I found out every single frame had to be drawn, inked, and, often, colored by hand, my appreciation for the cartoon-making industries grew. Though I realize the disadvantages of hand-drawn animation, it will always seem to me that there was a lot more love put into the images than today.

  • @iheartchocolate198 I could draw all day if I had the skills and tools to do it! I love how the animators can switch between animating on ones/twos and sometimes threes! Doing it seamlessly is the key!

  • wow, that was really interesting! i love learning about the history of cartoons and animation! ^_^

  • Fantastic! Thanks for putting in the time and effort to make this, it was really interesting and I learnt quite a lot. I love behind the scenes stuff so watching the old footage was fascinating :D

  • Before I watched this, I only briefly knew of some of the techniques and movies that used certain things and was actually under the impression that most Disney films back when I was a child (Minus Lion King majorly and a hand full of others) were all done with the same cel animation. Thanks for giving me a major lesson in animation! :D

  • I've always been curious about how they did animations! I'm glad I know now :D Amazing work.

  • you should for sure make more stuff like this about animation. I have been interested in animation for quite a while, and although i knew most of this stuff, i found it very good.

  • That was VERRRRY INTERESTING!!! Thank you. Though just to let you know, that the CAPS system and traditional animation is now making a comeback. check out, if you wish the cartoon short (my favorite) Goofy-how to hook up your home theatre, and the latest animation film ->The Princess and the Frog.

  • How on earth did you manage to get all this footage?!

Plus, I feel like I learned a lot from this video. I was aware of the usage of Cel-shaded animation in 101 Dalmatians, but i didn't think it also meant the background, too. I heard Walt Disney wasn't too fond of that method.

  • very good, i was wondering how they do it, but there never were any answers

  • Fun fact: Pixar was created by Lucasfilm

This is facsinating. I love all these movies. interesting to know so much more about animation. Glad I follow you on Deviant Art

  • @spidermanandsnape I was aware of that and thought briefly of mentioning it, but since Pixar wasn't the focus of this video I decided against it.

  • @TomPreston6 I assumed you knew about it. You certainly know more than I do on this subject. Rightly so, as it is your profession.

  • @spidermanandsnape not quite correct....

George Lucas was just another wealthy financier for Ed Cartmul and Alvy Ray Smith vision of computer animated film. It was their vision and started at the New York Institute of Technology financed by Alexander Schure :)

  • Is it you talking?

  • @thildaIIihp a sped-up me, yes.

  • @TomPreston6 I was gonna say that; the portrayal of yourself in SYAC doesn't quite match the voice of this video. I always thought your voice would be more close to the Nostalgia critic's.

  • One of my biggest questions solved in 7 ½ minute...

  • Wow u teach me more in a 7 minute video than they teach me in a year of school

  • @TheKittensNya glad I could be of help ^_^

  • COOOL I'VE ALWAYS WANTED TO SEE THESE TYPES OF THINGS 8D

  • TYYY ;V;

  • XD And I just finished Lady & the Tramp and was amazed by its' beauty. Rofl sorry for the comment spam. XD;;

  • This was really interesting! Thanks for posting! :D

  • This is great! It sort of reminded me of the old pre-film animation documentries they used to put on the Disney Films when they first came out on video when I was a child.

Thanks for the hard work, I'm going to go watch your other films now ^_^'

  • Thanks for making this video. I'm not a cartoonist or interested in doing animation, but things like this somehow interest me anyway. This seems to be one of those topics that Google cannot help with at all, leading me to scattered facts and tidbits of info that aren't put together at all. This helps a lot and was entertaining.

  • That was really interesting! You should make more :)

  • Oh man, every time I watch old cartoons I think "They probably went through hell to make that D:"

  • This was awesome! Learned a lot about animation! Thanks for taking the time to make this. It's obvious you put in a lot of hard work :)

  • Wow I learned alot of stuff!

  • nice!! and no wonder sailor moon looked that way :3

  • Your timing is impeccable- the moment I become insanely interested in Cel Animation, poof. Here this is. xD It's fantastic!! :D

  • wow, I learned so much. Animation has always been a wonder for me =)

  • This was so interesting! I really learned a lot, and having such a strong passion for cartoons and animation, this is some really useful information for me. Thank you!

  • I also have some of those colored cels ^.^

  • wow! i just learnt a ton of stuff i didnt know about and this refined some of my knowlage of what i already knew. this is great!!!

  • this IS interesting!!!! *___*

amazing how much work had to go into one single movement, it's just unbelievable!!!

  • Very nice and educational!

Now I wont need to go to art class, eh? :)

  • Indeed this was both educational and entertaining ! I must say it's also Awsome !

Euh Can someone please tell me from which movie is this 7:02 or animation . ? I just think it's very pretty and I'de like to see the rest of it ^^

  • @JassmanGa I wanna know too, it looks sooo beautiful! anyone? please??

  • @ElfenfeuerAkaAzi

its from fantasia 2000, its the last bit of animation in the film, i think it was done to the classical piece 'firebird' but i cant remember exactly.

  • @dragonetgirl thank you so much for helping out, that's really nice of you!! :))))))))

  • @JassmanGa Fantasia 2000 :)

  • @JassmanGa Fantasia 2000.

  • @jinnyschannel Thank youu ^^

  • This is the type of things I love to learn, I'm subscribing, and I hope for allot of great stuff like this. I'd love to be your student if I could. :D and I knew there was an easier way to animate. Who knows, by the time I get up to animation level it might become another 3 or 5 X easier! :D

  • awesome! please do another video like this please :)

  • I think if your voice hadn't been really high, this would have been more boring than it was. XD Thanks for the info, I learned a lot.

  • Thanks for making this. It was very informative.

  • sped up voice or not, this was really awesome. :)

  • Awesome! But I really don't feel it necessary to... distort your voice that way. It makes it a bit... hard to take seriously, if you know what I mean =.

  • @zemc77 He sped it up so that he could fit it into the original ten minute cap. This was prior to the newer, fifteen minute one.

  • @taburde ... I derped Dx

  • Hehe your voice sped up

  • I love this! I knew about cels, but not much. This is very informative!

  • Cool

  • It's astonishing learning this. I would love to go work at Pixar or Disney when I grow up. I can't even imagining the amount of time and effort of everything- the lights and the color and All of that! It's crazy. Thank you for making this video - I would love to see another of these videos :D

  • Wonderful. Its great to learn about animation and the techniques, i hope you make more.

  • I still love that old style.

  • I loved Disney's CAPS system, it still managed the traditional feel while lending a digital hand to help make the process quicker

  • cool.

  • This is very informative! It's impressive how hard animation used to be.
