Excellent tutorial, thank you. If you cut the cardboard in the other direction, across the corrugations, it will be easier to roll into a smooth circle, and all of the holes will face up.
to use for cooking you can put a metal coffee can over the top on this while it is burning. we did that iin scout camp when i was a youngster and cooket burgers on the top. was pretty fun. and when you are done you can put all your cooking and eating stuff back in the coffee can for next time
i put candle wicks in the cardboard before i put the wax in and it makes it easiers to light...just light the whicks like a normal candle and the cardboard will eventually light..nice tutorial.
I've used these before, and with a vented can (bigger coffee can for example), it does the trick.
A couple of hints for being more effective:
- Cut the cardboard so you end up with the little holes on the edges, not the long wave as you have in the video. It helps in wicking the wax for a bit more effective burn and makes it easier to get a tighter coil when you roll it.
- When using the burner, place small cubes of wax on it to keep it burning longer.
I have built many of these and now that I have tried them, I would not reccomend them.
At first they seem fine. But when they get going, the whole wax is molten and any water (rain etc)will cause the equiv of a chip pan fire. Also the smoke is so that you cant use indoors. To me not worth it. Better to use wicks and basically make tealights.
Just my 2 cents. but be carefull if you actually try them and outside they didnt have enough heat to boil water in any wind.
I'm playing wi these, looking @ both fiberglass and cotton wicks placed with better spacing since I'm having draft and burn issues. Also using 2 sizes of tuna can, the smaller for a burner and the larger for a wind screen/potstand/draft chimney.
And the best version of CG that I've heard thus far. :) thanks, what album/source is it from?
enough, hmm, good question! I haven't tried it out with a lmf or any other striker rod so I can't say for sure. However, with the amount of wax and cardboard in these little babies, I'm thinkin' more than a flash spark will be needed. I'll check it out after the holidays and see what results. Again, thanks for the great query.
I've made these before, and you need a steady flame to ignite it, even if you put a wick in the center.
Knot, I STRONGLY advise against melting the wax in any pot directly over the heat! Double-boiler ONLY!! If you put your teapot inside another pot filled with water, that should work fine.
ghetto, that's a tough question! The burner will usually burn constantly for several hours (3, 4, maybe even longer depending on conditions), however giving it a specific time for re-ignitions is almost impossible to predict! Sorry. Try it out on your next camp out, and let us know! : )
Maybe i cant see it too well in the video but if you turn and cut the cardboard in the direction where the wavy center (for the lack of a better term) to stand vertical, you can pour in more wax and it would probably cool a bit quicker before you continue filling it. If you have no idea what i am talking about, turn your cardboard sideway :)
cb, depending on how warm your room is, a few minutes to a few minutes more! The wax doesn't need to be rock hard, just solid. So pour the first layer, grab a few M&Ms, chat up the spouse then go back and it should be ready. = )
how long it burns ?

Never top up with wax because if you do when the buddy burner is lit the wax will expand and overflow.

how long does it burn? if you used a can that size?
TheWolf739 1 year ago
You can also just light the candle and drip the wax into the cardboard.

@knotinthestring - perhaps some tinder on top to catch the spark, like dryer lint or cotton balls?

So , this is for an emergency kit, cause if you had all the crap to make it, you could use that to cook your frakkin food!
jeffdabates 2 years ago
um, yeah. Jeff you nailed it. It's the kind of thing you would make ahead of time, and pack away for camping or emergency use.
