i'd like to say something about Mr. Haggard. i met him in a place i worked... i talked with him and gave him a tape of my music. he left the building and left the tape on the table. the next morning he came back for breakfast. he saw me and said... hey...i forgot to take the tape with me yesterday...do you have another one? i gave him another tape... and was pretty damn proud to have met the man. especially when a song played on the radio that had his name in it as i sat with him.
These boys sang what they lived . . . they didn't have a hundred monkeys on a hundred typewriters writing songs until a hit came along. These guys are the real deal.
@WhitetailWillie no way! george strait doesn't write hardly any of his material. he is no where near being the HAG. the hag is a true artist. he is the best singer in the history of country music. jones is number 2. merle is a singer and a songwriter. he lived his songs.
@WhitetailWillie merle is an artist. he makes a stand. he stands his ground. he doesn't cave in to the record executives/companies. he pays no mind to any trends that come along. he does things his way. he does what he wants to do. he doesn't take commercial considerations into mind. merle lived his songs. he wrote much/most of his material. strait just does what he is told to do.
@johnrunion i understand the feats that merle overcame in country music. i guess in the generation that i've grown up to listening, i still consider george strait as traditional country.
@WhitetailWillie i was 19 when george strait hit. i never understood what the big deal was. he, john anderson and ricky skaggs among others were called traditionalists. we still had merle, george, waylon. now i understand that the new traditionalists movement was basically the country music industry creating a phenomenon in reaction to all of the negative press + backlash over the urban cowboy fad.
@WhitetailWillie merle had to fight and struggle against the powers that be to make the kind of music he wanted. strait and his generation were given the blessing of the industry for doing what they/the powers that be wanted.
Great video but your notes are wrong my friend. 25yrs ago was in the 80's when the bigger stars had custom busses and recorded mostly in Nashville on 24channel recorders.
Wonderful. Love the little inserted clips and photos including Elvis Costello, Linda Ronstat & Bonnie Raitt with their arms around George and the clip with Rosanne Cash in the background while George nabs an award. Especially love George saying, "You had a better manager than me at the time." Speaks volumes.
Man you said it right! The country singers today have zero talent compared to these guys and many of their generation....like Kieth Whitley and Earl Thomas Conley to name a few.
Actually, If you read the previous comments you'd see that I was replying to oldpro1977 , who said " let us praise the drunks" So I said " let us praise the posers" ( referring to Trace Adkins). All these "singers" of today need to get their heads out of the record execs asses and take a few lessons from Merle & George
nothing is wrong with Hannah Montana...when she is legal, i will put it in her pooper...
I said "a bunch of Hannah Montana wannabe's"...meaning that todays country has a bunch of pop stars in it, no soul...no country...no whiskey drinking...no wife beating...no dog loving...no more Waylon, Cash, Merle, Hank, Strait, Hank JR, Twitty, early Garth, Chris LeDuex...etc...etc...bunch of crap today...PURE CRAP.

It sounds like George had quite the life I read his book and I enjoyed it very much. He admits what he did wrong in life and it also sounds like he had alot of fun too. Everyone calls George the bad-ass I think he was like every other drunk but he just had loads of talent and he made it through with all the help of his fans and all the ones that loved him personally. He is a true legend. I love his laugh on here.
Great video but you are wrong that they traveled in cars when George and Merle recorded together. I was in the business when they cut their album and both got around in very nice customized tour buses and had been doing so almost 20 years.
And for what it's worth, when Merle and George cut their duet album it would have been done on a 48 or 64 track machine...two tracks were only in use at radio stations or for dubbing an already mixed and mastered tape.
as true as this is for a lot of the time, I can recall them loading up into station wagons in Sioux Falls back in the late 60's. The industry back then was up and down and that included transportation

Tremendous legends..sadly they are hardly ever played any more we all have to listen to what is called country music now with all the wanna bees who cant even begin to Fill Their Shoes or walked where they have
it is nice to see these old cats get a chance to sit together and remember the rebel days when they totally changed (for the better) OUR COUNTRY MUSIC!!!
Carmonyt...that is one point I will not agrue! ... but if someone says anyone other than the original Hank is better than Merle I'd have to diagree! Take care! It was good to hear from ya!!!
cindy the Hag and George aren't their WRONG company..every great new commer looks up to the legends, whats so wrong with WANTING TO HANG OUT WITH A LEGEND THAT YOU LOOK UP TO?
Hmmm, i'd like to agree with u on that point, merle is great my dad brought me up on him, but my dad also brought me up on more of Hank Williams Sr. so i'd have to say that Merle is second best only to Hank.
don't think i'll ever miss them..... cause i don't think they'll ever really leave me.

merle haggard is the greatest singer-songwriter in the history of country music!
jhrunion 4 years ago
Hmmm, i'd like to agree with u on that point, merle is great my dad brought me up on him, but my dad also brought me up on more of Hank Williams Sr. so i'd have to say that Merle is second best only to Hank.
