Donegan changed the words (diamond rings etc)... This is the first version that i learned but I changed immediately upon hearing the Lee Hays version some years ago.
Carl Sandburg's "The American Songbag' (1927) is indeed a book. I found my copy in a second hand book shop a few years back. A wonderful book if you can find it.
