This song makes me think of protective parents who don't want their 18 year old girl to dress in a manner that may attract predators: 'barely blooming 18 wants to know what's hiding in the shadows?'

I think what it means is that to teenagers at 17 and 18, reality is a "drag," in that it sucks. They have to learn to be responsible and grow up. "Reality is always such a drag to barely blooming eighteens." It sucks at that age because you are no longer a kid, though parents sometimes treat you like a kid still. At the same time, you cant do whatever you want-you have to grow up eventually.
