My only complaint with this series is how overly sympathetic they are to Johanna. While Ludwig definitely overreacts she really was kind of a skuzz-ball.
@dalecampbl7 No he liked mankid so much as he wrote in his letters. The problem was his deafness who put him in a terrible condition! HE HAS BEEN THE GREATEST MUSIC'S GENIUS EVER IMHO
i think timing has it...i would say beethoven was the greatest of his generation...No.1 IMHO, but I dunno if he's necessarily better than Bartok or Shostakovich who came later and had to deal with what was already explored prior thorhg beethoven, chopin wagner, liszt. etc.
@dalecampbl7 Except bartok and shostakovich's music just isn't that good. There are no memorable melodies for me, compared with beethoven. Sure it's interesting, but that's about it.
@bguay26 Bartok and Shostakovich are great in their own rights...it's hard to compare two composers from such different social circumstances under different time periods...but I would say Bartok and shostakovich were the best from their time periods.
@bguay26 i used to feel the same way about Bartok and Shostakovich...but then one year I fell in love with Bartok...his language is incredibly impressive...tight knit...i dunno, anyone can definitely enrich their musical comprehension by adding Bartok into the listening repertoire
BTW, I'm really proud because some of the scenes here, notably 2:58 to 3:35 were shot in my home city of Wroclaw (former Breslau); more precisely in Ostrow Tumski, where I live:
What a great documentary!!! Really one of the best out there.
I would also recommend You another BBC documentary "Eroica- the movie", which is also fantastic and shows the first performance of Beethoven's 3rd symphony. Just search it on the Youtube.
My friends, we're in front of one of the greatest mankind's geniuses ever!!!!
