@Buzzsawman Thanks buzz, I really need the encouragement. Especially now while I am trying to finish up two more projects this week. Great experience but slow to correct mistakes. Take Care.
@haydenHD Thanks Carl. You know me I love the excitement! I really had a great time not knowing what I was doing. The great part is I learned my Lathe has a "Fail Safe". That's why it suddenly stopped when I got the catch.
@MrLeonard55 You got that right, Leonard. Maybe I should call it my "OS Bowl" that way I won't offend the grandchildren. I gotta' say, I haven't moved that fast in a long time. I really contemplated whether I should leave the camera on after that.
it is aimed at teaching beginners how to work on the outside of a bowl... keep the handle low, and you'll get the same shavings I demo. When I teach my class at Peters Valley, I explain outside/outside inside/inside for bowl turning. If you are on the outside of the bowl, start on the outside (bark) of the tree. If you are cutting the inside of a bowl, start from the inside of the tree (and cut out to the bark side.)
The finish you brewed up is known as 'O.B.'s Shine Juice', and is attributed to O.B. Lacoste, a woodturner from Lafayette, LA. Works great ... I use it on pens, handles, bowls, etc.
santonucci is right. I quit fretting about catches when I saw Richard Raffan, one of the top turners in the world, get a catch while turning a sphere ... it pretty much happens to all of us.
If you look at the video closely (1:12-1:22), you are cutting just barely at centerline and slowly raising the handle, which drops you below centerline. You are also not cutting, but scraping with the gouge (as illustrated by the visible gap between the wood and the bevel) You need to raise the toolrest to cut above centerline. Scraping like this usually puts a bowl into orbit...
@santonucci I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate this kind of information. I have held back on turning a bowl for a long time. Now that I got this one out of the way I think number two will not be so frightful. Please continue these short tutorials as you see fit.
@IrishWoodDoctor The video was playing real-time. The catch stopped the lathe immediately. I looked at the manual last night and discovered the lathe was built with a "Fail Safe".
@GremlinWood Thanks. My heart sank on that catch, but I'm glad I continued the video. I really enjoyed turning it, and I couldn't let my first bowl do me in. Thanks so much for watching.
nice bowl Guy, i agree what you said about other people uploading videos on bowls and such. it really does help the inexperienced turner get a good start. i use to build pool cues on my lathe but when i started turning bowls and other craft type things i didn't have a clue. thanks!
Nice bowl, Guy. How do you like that Laguna lathe? It sounds like it's really smooth running. It's an 18/47, right? One of these days...ahh...in my dreams!
@Larenzoid Yes an 18/47 220 power source. I have no complaints about my lathe. I really like the versatility in having the options of very small and fairly large pieces. It has plenty of power and torque. Grizzly sells the identical lathe with their name on it, and at the same price.
As we all know...there are no mistakes in woodturning....there are only design opportunities. And you were afforded one such opportunity.

@GeraldJensen Thanks Gerald, it is good to know the origin of this cocktail. I appreciate you taking the time to inform me.
It's comforting to know that those nasty catches are common, as long as it doesn't happen to me again!

How od you stop the lathe so fast after the catch, or was the video sped up? Not a bad result at all on the bowl.

Don't worry about the catch. Just make sure you're wearing a safety face shield...catches always happen, even to the pro woodturners....
