Riding Bikes Instead of Driving, Vintage old Bikes Part 1

not to mention medical costs because you are healthy. I rode bicycles when i was young, like a transport, everywhere i go, but stopped about 10 years ago, and in that 10 years i became obese, i got high cholesterol, high blood pressure. sigh, im gonna get on a bike again...

I ride my bike to work and the market every day. It is the bike my parents bought for me when I was in the 7th grade. A campus green Schwinn Varsity. All original, except for the rear gear. I messed it up when I was young, but it was replaced with an identical gear shifter. I put new tires and tubes on it about two months ago. Gum walls. It is a great bike.

I found a 1989 Schwinn Voyaguer and am using it as my city bike. Love it.. A very nice bike..

there are all sorts of old specialized rockhoppers that are really cheap. I was considering making a cheap, fun single speed out of one.

Totally agree that old steel MTB's make great all-round bicycles. I got an Elan X-Country MTB (Italian brand made in Taiwan). Great bike with butted CRMO frame, fitted with all the same comforts as yours, except I went for North Road style handlebars and upgraded to V-brakes. Sadly I buckled the rear wheel (looks like the original from the 1980's) over the weekend, and it's hanging up in my garage awaiting a new set of wheels. It weighed in at about 16kg (36lbs) unloaded.

I just bought a vintage Schwinn 3 speed for running errands in town. I was getting frustrated firing up the car just to drive a couple of miles to pick up little items. Unfortunately, my commute is 66 miles one way so I can't ride to work yet.
