I think it is a good idea to have a goal but I don't think it even has to be necessarily to pay off debt or buy anything. I think it can even be just to have money in your bank account. Why is it that its okay to want things that cost money, often lots of money but if you simply want the money your told "money can't buy happiness." I can tell you as someone with low income but lots of savings poverty doesn't buy happiness either.
