does anyone know if detroit diesel made a slant 6-71?? we got a NC10 aircraft electrical power unit here at work, and the engine is for sure a 6-71 but she aint straight up! just wonderin
@Michigander79 If they are set up for it the 6-71s can be run on a slant or even laying on their side, some old buses ran them flat on their side to get more passenger space
i want one! im tired of dealing with fucking carburetors on my lawnmower...if i could throw one of these in my mower, id never have to clean the carb, or replace another sparkplug. the gasser ive got is alright for a single cylinder briggs 18.5 horse, but id rather run diesel. itd never bog down in 3 foot tall grass either, probbably wouldnt even blacksmoke.
@FarmallDoctor No you can not. In almost any possible scenario. There are some small 2 cycle gas engines that use glow plugs but thats as close as you'll ever get. I think most of them are on the rc cars. A 2 cycle gas engine is an apple, and a 2 cycle diesel is like a pineapple. They sound similar in name, but you just arent going to make one the other. Large container ships use something remotely similar to the reed valve scavenging of 2 cycle gas engines, but nothing else is similar.
@ledzepplin12able No way. There are a couple of good videos here on youtube that will explain why the gas 2-strokes and the diesel 2-strokes are two COMPLETELY diferent animals.
@FarmallDoctor Not quite. Chicago Pnumatic made 2 stroke diesels that were purely natually aspirated. Do a YT search for this "Chicago Pneumatic 100hp Crank View" I would have just imbedded a link but YT beta doesn't let me. This is a 2 stroke natually aspirated diesel. (non-scavenging) There are other engines out there also. Nice 1-71 though!
I think they were made the way they were so you could just slap cylinders back to back to get the number of cylinders you wanted. Like a boiler in your house.
No, the 2-71, 3-71, 4-71, 6-71, and the 12V71 all have single blocks. The 16V71 and the 24V71 use two blocks bolted together, as do the 12 and 16 cylinder 92 series, and the larger 149 series use two blocks, I think even three blocks make up a 20V149.
VERY rare. 2-71s were a lot more common.

exactly 5 more of those, and I'd have myself an extremely acceptable engine

@Michigander79 - strange, but I have seen such things with half of a V8 or something similar... half a 12V71 maybe?

If I'm not mistaking 1-71s were only made up into the 1950s and for marine gensets.

can you convrt a 2cycle gas motor to die
sel???
ledzepplin12able 2 years ago
A 2 cycle gas engine just doesn't have the strength built in to produce the high compression pressures required to ignite the injected fuel.
