Alcohol at the time was destroying James' life, so naturally he would express that in his lyrics, which is something a lot of people can relate to. S&M dared to go where a Metal band hadn't before, and mix an orchestra with the Thrash/Heavy Metal/Hard Rock sound of Metallica. Which was pretty groundbreaking, if you look at how successful it was.

It gives the public an insight on just how normal and human people from a band as huge as Metallica really are.
