@Webcast01 You are correct, at the time when I opened the camera I had mis-spoke - The 3mos sensor is a next gen cmos sensor design. There is a blog entry at panasonic that describes the the device (can't post a link here unfortunately) but a small quote: "... Thus, Panasonic has developed the "νMAICOVICON." This is a new MOS sensor technology, that is based on the same structure as the CMOS sensor, ..."
The Panasonic AG-HMC40 is a camcorder designed to record in high definition on standard Secure Digital (SD) and SDHC memory cards. The camera is extremely portable and lightweight, weighing in at just over 2 lbs. While SD-based camcorders have been gaining ground in the consumer market, the AG-HMC40 has the ability to ...

@randomtvusa Huh? The camera doesn't come with an external mic (at least it didn't back when I bought it), it has an onboard mic with both a mic input and a special jack for connecting the the XLR adapter.
@ChrisDoSloan Hey, I'm sorry I never got back to you on this, I totally missed the comment/question somehow. There is a button on the side where the LCD is toward the back of the camera that toggles the OIS on and off.
hey i was curious if the Panasonic's were compatible wit mac computers. I herd from a friend of mine that sony and jvc were not and i wanted to double check with to see if it was compatible before i go ahead and purchase one.
@Jeffm020194 Yes, I use it on my Mac. The mode you record (1080 60i/30p/24p 720p60/30/24) in will determine whether the footage is compatible with iMovie though (I don't use iMovie so I can't really comment on its compatibilities). I use Final Cut Pro and it works fine with all of the record modes the camera is capable of.
@Zombiebrainstew Well, I think you have to consider your project. If you plan a lot of the scenes to be dark or in poor lighting, you may want to consider another camera. If the scenes are going to be well lit, the camera is a strong performer; I have been quite pleased with the footage from this camera in good lighting. It's not that you can't capture any images in low light, it's just not a strong low light performer and it may be hard to get the imagery that you envision.
@Nethfel Hey bro could you recommend another camera in the same price range that does everything this camera does ( as well as good light ) ? Thank you sir !!!
@Zombiebrainstew Hey, that's going to be tricky - the camera has a lot of really nice features for the price. Other cameras that perform better in low light at the same price are usually single chip cameras. (you can see a small comparison I did on low light in my other videos ) My suggestion would be - if your scenes are short (<17 minutes per record period) to look at getting a dSLR w/ HD capability. The sensors are huge, the optics (canon/nikon) are
@Nethfel Hey thanks man for your reply. I was looking into a canon d5 mark ii (I think that's the name) buy I heard it didn't shoot 24fps? I'm really new to cameas mainly because I could never afford one. I did check out your review of low light conditions.
@Zombiebrainstew Is 24fps really important to you? If it is, you may want to look at the Canon 7D or the 60D or the Nikon D7000 (coming soon or may already be released, not sure) or the D3100. No matter what you get (Nikon, Canon or other) you'll want to make sure you have an external microphone.
@Nethfel Hey thanks for your advice bro. I think I'm gonna go with the 7d. It seems to have everything I need for an affordable price. I'm gonna sun to your channel as payment for your helpful tips lol
@TylerSaysTV No not really. It uses standard SDHC flash cards - it's not like some of the Panny's that use P2 cards. I usually use Class 6 cards in mine. 16 gig runs about $40+ and 32 gig ~$100+ (probably less if you search the net a bit or look on ebay). Class 10 cards are faster, but a lot more expensive.
@jgzero12 In all honesty, I'm not sure - if you are, you probably record in the lower mode that records at 1440x1080. I know you can set the display to show 4:3 safe areas. When I get home today, I'll take a look at my camera and see if you can record 4:3 - since I shoot 16:9 now I never really thought to check.
@jgzero12 I checked it - it's 16:9 thru the entire record process - the only way to see 4:3 at all is if you output the video from the camera it can display on a TV at 4:3. The 1440x1080 mode records in an anamorphic mode so when played back it's displayed as 1920x1080
@InspireImages No, it didn't. I know they have been changing around promotions lately. Mine came with Edius, I've heard some people saying they got a BluRay player. I know the HMC150 came with a memory card for a while. But my camcorder didn't come with one. I already had 2 16 gig class 6 cards so I was good to go with the camera when I got it.
@Nethfel thanks, I just picked up a 16 Gig high speed Lexar chip and a 4 gig generic chip. Nothing worse than having a new unit you can't use after taking it from the box! Is the manual any good or can you recommend any good reading. I am sort of a newbie to HD video.
@InspireImages Well, the printed manual is rather lame - it's small and doesn't cover the camera in depth. Now, it does come with the full manual on PDF on a CD - now that manual is quite detailed and covers the vast majority of the camera in depth. Some topics are covered a little lightly and requires some extra thinking about it - but there is a lot of good info. Also, search here on youtube for the AVCCAM evangelist - he's got several good "getting started" videos.
@zyglr0x No problem - honestly, it is an awesome camera. I hadn't gotten rid of my HF yet as I wanted to be sure I liked the Panny, but I've found it does to a very good job and once you get used to where everything is, it's fairly quick to setup.
The only thing I've found I'm not fond of is the way to change the shutter speed. Other then that the camera is great!
"I've been reading about this little device... This key is for something on the camera" -- this was hilarious :-) I hope you found out by now that this a a stylus for the touch-screen. I am looking forward for comparison tests of this camera with the HF100 in regards to resolution, sensitivity and noise. Good unboxing video with useful narration. Thanks.
@ConsumerDV Hahaha, yeah, I felt kind of like a moron later after I realized my mistake - I had put what it was for in my text based comments. Unfortunately, I had confused that part with something about a different camera I had read about - after I finished everything I came across my mistake - at that point I had already uploaded and didn't want to re-render the video.
@ConsumerDV I'm right now waiting for the weather to get nice again so maybe I can find some different locations to test (but no flowing grass, I think I've seen enough of that on various test videos to choke a horse ;). I've been working at getting the settings and modes down on the HMC - so many more options - but I do really like the feel of it so far.
It's not CMOS, it's just 3 MOS Sensors.
