Mario Lanza sings this Aria with a passion that few if any tenor past or present has been able match much less achieve. It is sad the Mr. Lanza left us at a young age and sadder still that we have not had an another American tenor with such ring and passion in his voice! Bravo Mr, Lanza! You are now singing to God.

Lanza is really beyond compare in the Canzone Napoletana. This is where he is at his best, and could sing however he pleased without worrying about being compared to Richard Tucker, Tito Schipa or Jussi Bjorling as a technical singer. This ranks as one of the greatest tenor recordings of all time, and none of those "opera" singers could have matched it.
Nobody can send shivers down by spine like this man can i've heard and judged many of the worlds greatest tenors kraus, bjoriling, gigli, geddi, wunderlich all in my opinion some of the worlds best tenors but none for me touches my soul like mario
my only thing i've noticed was his diction was sometimes a little off but nobody's
perfect and you can never sing the same song twice i loved him and always will r.i.p
His voice is clear, like a bell, yet full and lush with passion. A big voice with the frequency for the high "C" and and the sharp above, but also with amplitude to provide a fullness to the flow.
Am 75, Mario captivated me when I was 16. When He died so suddenly It was like alight going out in the whole world. Thank God the voice has been preserved so the magic can always be here for generations to come.
Every word is perfect, every note is perfect - from his heart, to our hearts, down through the years. In how many languages could he sing? Neapolitan, I do not understand a word, but the voice makes up for it all! Even the French is wonderful and the English is superb (the only language I do understand)!
This song has been my favourite for such a long time.... Thank you Mario and thank you to everybody who has made this glorious listening possible. God bless you all.
Placido Domingo commented that Mario Lanza, had he lived, would have been the greatest tenor of all time; as well as Licia Albanese (excuse my spelling). who was one of the greatest sopronos of all time..
This tenor is Awesome many in the opera fraternity tend to try and turn people off him as he was not TEChNICALLY Perfect! To me he is full of passion and there is feeling in every vowel and to me that is perfect at least there is no one to replace him
@antaine12 I don't understand where the idea came from that Lanza's technique was not perfect. After all he studied with Enrico Rosati, Gigli's teacher. Lanza's technique was as perfect as it gets in my opinion. Maybe his pronunciation in Italian was a bit off at times, but that's a different story. Pavarotti sounded weird when he sung in English as well and we don't say that his technique had deficiencies. Mario Lanza = Perfect technique!
@Pollione88 You are so right! Mario's technique is always in quetion and I don't know why. He opens his mouth and pure gold rushes out. You are right about Pav. His English sounds weird and nobody cries about that. Bravo Mario - you will always be the best. for me.
There is NOTHING simple about Mario Lanza! The depth of feeling of this man's voice, his diction, the excrutiating beauty of his pianissimos! His passion is appreciated only by the truly passionate!!!
No words, simply no words for this!Sr.Mario Lanza was in somethinks simply the best at that´s it.We can´t do nothing.Great times with great singers and now we don´t have any Corelli,Del Monaco,Di Stefano,Kraus,of course Mario Lanza too.Well I think that the best Tenor now is Sr.Roberto Alagna.
OK.I´ve got nothing too say, just WOAHO,what an amazing voice.
What a glorious voice, and what wonderful singing! Italian pronunciation is moot: he is not singing in Italian. The language is Napoledan (Neapolitan), and it is pronounced quite differently than Italian (for example, unvoiced consonants in Italian are voiced in Neapolitan. There are many other differences as well.)
Thank you for your knowledgeable input! My grandfather's first language was Napoledan; alas, I never learned it. I would love to have a copy of the complete text of this song, in Napoledan and if possible, translated into Italian. Might you know anything about how I could learn more about "Mamma mia, che vo' sape'?" Thanks.
How was Mario's Italian pronunciation ? Some Idiot had the stupidity to tell me that Mario's Italian was sloppy and that he wasn't of Operatic quality. His 'YouTube" user name is jclaw and he is either deaf or a total ignorant fool. All those who agree with me please send jclaw your opinion and put this guy in his place TY.

The majoryty of tenors singing on stage at the present can not match Lanza's voice natural beauty, neither his technique
or interpretative power. But all of them had a secret dream, and wish they could have sung like Mario Lanza.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Lanza was extremely talented, but--like Richard Tucker--he had a weakness for overinterpreting and "punching up" simple material.

Para mí, la mejor versión de esta nostálgica canción napolitana, insluso mejor que la grabada por Di Stefano.
Sei meraviglioso, Mario! A quasi 50 anni dalla tua morte, non esiste piu' grande tenore che te.
