Ballard did not intentionally hit the goalie.Clearly, you can see the defenceman blocking his way to the goal.When you watch Ballard's stick however, you'll notice that when he is sliding toward the boards his stick is wrapped around the goalies neck. Just as Ballard hits the board he pulls and twists his stick to get it free.I presume that he thought it was stuck against the post. Foote had no right to do the wailing he did, however, when split seconds are what you judge, this is what happens.

With the angle Ballard was taking on the goalie by trying to get around the defensemen, it probably would have been even worse had he not be tripped up and sent wide. I'm not saying it was intentional but he didn't do anything to avoid it either.. He's obviously trying hard to prove himself after the Vokoun incident and this is the result. I don't think he even gets punched there if there wasn't the previous incident which tags him as a wreckless idiot around the rest of the league.

As far as Foote'sa actions, a cross check and face washing is acceptable because he wants to protect his goalie but a punch to a downed opponent's face is a cheap shot and I hope Adam Foote gets a fine. Reason being is because Foote is not a repeat offender therefore he's not deserving of a suspension. My advice to you: maybe watch hockey a little more closely and try to understand what these guys are feeling.
