vertical smile is a standard sexual reference, not rarely used.  At least it's not too embarrassing a Freudian slip ;)

hi nate, try this:

try to do the E with your finer tips on your chicks (or however is written) so that you dont smile very much that is what he meant, if you have more trouble with this, buy the book "set your voice free" by roger love its very helpful

Sorry Tim, good lesson! Wish I could sing!!!!!!!! Can't even get the right pitch to make some of these exercises work. Lol. Darn it. If i could sing just a tiny bit I could expand my solo guitar repetoire but I seem to have a range of just 2 notes... both of them flat! Lol.
