More money than brains!! That's like giving someone a Ferrari who doesn't even have a learner's
permit let alone a license to drive. What a huge waste of beautiful technology on a spoiled brat little wanker :-(
The next thing he'll be doing is setting up his own wedding photography business just because he owns a world class dSLR camera. Dad just sent him the wrong message about values and what's important in life. Disappointing parenting :-(
Welcome to my world Dom this is what i go through as a here in Southern california from kids to adult that have too much money, and buy piece of gear they will never understand how to use or want to use after a few months.
@Snakekilla12 there are cropped sensor cameras now that can do 14fps, print sizes have nothing to do with sensor sizes, and dynamic range. well my 6mp cropped sensor fuji still beats any full frame i have ever used. so no those are not limitations
seriously though, check out the digitalrevtv channel, they have this challenge, pro photographer - crap camera. where they get stuff like the first nokia phone with a 1.5 megapixel camera to a really good photographer where he took really cool photos.
My first camera, Canon Rebel XS after 2 or so years of borrowing a cruddy little old Kodak all the time. Had the thing for almost 3 years or so now. Also being schooled in art is stupid, schools ruin creativity which is entirely necessary in art. Finally, return the damn D3 and pick up a D90, some lenses, maybe a flash and get to learning.
I hate wannabe photographers.. I started off with a shitty point and shoot and upgraded to a advance point and shoot and then a beginners DSLR and then now my much much more advance D7000 and my next body (probably a while down the road) will be the D300s replacement or with D700 replacement.
You can't just be a good photographer by buying the best equipment available with out knowing how to use it nor know about photography.
Anyways, Dom that t-shirt is pretty sweet, can I get it?
£2,800....... I can only wish. Yes everyone has to start somewhere. HELLO I started with a PRACTICA film SLR £60 with lenses! Oh and it didn't have a pop-up-flash either..... Wow what a plonker...
it's like having a sports car but don't know how to drive. dombower, give this guy a break (LOL) when I had my first SLR camera (35mm) it was hard learning how to use the Av/M/Tv modes. look at it this way, he didn't buy one he got it for free. I'm just happy that this kid is trying to learn and use his d3.
in fairness if you know nothing about cameras you'd assume a high end flagship model would have all the bells & whistles such as a popup flash it just wouldn't have occurred to a noob that a popup flash is totally rubbish as a lighting source (though would still be nice to have if only as a flash trigger)
It's not unusual for people to acquire equipment that is beyond their capabilities. We see that on the motorways every day.
And people that can easily afford such extravagance as a D3 (non professionals, of course) tend not to be willing to accept the fact that they don't know how to use it. One of the things money seems to buy is arrogance, I'm afraid.
If I had a D3 I would sell it, buy a decent midrange camera and buy a load of high quality lenses and other equipment. The camera gives you the potential for your shots to happen, but you need all the other equipment and skill to make it work. I know someone who has a Canon 7D and their photos are JPEG Auto Mode pieces of awfulness. They're better off selling that camera and buying a good book.
i thought the D3 was liek $5500 USA dollars x_x my boss has one and once you have a D3 you should be able to afford a speed light , blarg lucky kid =[
Could be a troll indeed, but I meet morons like that in real life and at the moment they tell me that they are shooting jpeg the conversation is over immediately.
Anyway, everybody should go with the gear he got, going to the edge and then upgrade accordingly.
In this case it's just buying a Lamborghini when you just got your license for the only purpose to drive to the grocery store next door. You'll never know what your gear is capable off.
Dom, I think you're giving this fktard too much airtime. I'm sure there are many others who deserve your time and considerable expertise than a stupid tnuc who thinks he's a smartass and has no manners to boot.
If you believe that bullocks you should view at the internet once more and more again. Its full proof un-logical how a dad that knows how to use or f'n knows what that peace of plastic does or what is a D3 gave to a son which is clearly less than 16 years old asking for your help of the pop up flash.
P.S. thats a definition of dipshit from that family.
I understand/agree with your frustration about the über noob questions as those answer can be found anywhere on the internet or just your DSLR manual. But I don't think you're right about the D3, that's quite relative as some people can easily afford a D3 the same way as someone else could only afford a d3100 .. (and no i'm not suspecting you're jealous)
you're talking about more details in his abusive email he sent you back. Is it possible to post that one too on Youtube??
@MVC7CVM no because i dont keep abusive emails, i delete them and block the sender. I have so much work to do and so many email to respond to that I dont have time to waste dealing with spoilt rich assholes who havent earned their right nor learnt how to be polite.
I can see what happened. (gonna guess this is a kid because he still gets birthday gifts that's not beer or a gas card) He asked for a nikon d 3000 or something and his papa had a decent amount of money to spend.. He see's the nikon D3 and thought it would be nice to get him a better camera then he wanted?? That's my guess
But either way I wanna trade them for my nikon d60 lol
I remember being handed a Canon 7D just to muck about with from a 'photographer.' I changed his lens to manual focus and changed the mode to Manual. Took a photo and handed it back to him and he flipped... he thought I broke the lens, and he couldn't understand why his photos were black... MAYBE BECAUSE I CHANGED THE FUCKING APERTURE AND SHUTTER SPEED!!!!! How do these facebook 'photographers' make more money then I????
@Dombowerphoto Something similar happened to me, i handed my camera to "newpaper photographer" who was taking photo's at our school to take a photo of me and my friends. He couldn't figure out why it wasn't zooming, he was trying to zoom my 50mm F1.8 (sony) by twisted the focus ring. What an idiot!
@ClicheRomanceband I did the same to a friend who owns a Canon 5D Mk11, He usually shot in auto but I changed it to manual, he said his photos were all dark. I told him to alter his exposure, he replied what is exposure, doh. After a few days of explaining the exposure triangle, the penny finally dropped.
@ClicheRomanceband Seriously I think people with too much money should sit for a test when purchasing pro camera..like find a pop up flash first....just fucking annoying to find idiots who can't work the camera has money... so the lesson is simple...find a rich friend..get him or her to buy a pro camera.then convinced them that's spoiled...n replace it with a point n shoot...be creative when u r conning rich people...cheers :p
im a self taught person . YouTube was my teacher . 4 years later i am doing very well and now im teaching up and comers ! my photog business is doing very well and im loving life cuz of my camera!
Haha i love the answer to the "m mode" question....."maybe the lens cap is still on" LOL! Must be frustrating for someone like you who has a skill, and has worked hard to get too where you can afford a D3 from your skill, for someone to then just be gifted one!
The Dad must not have realized it was going to be so complicated when he got it for the turd. Obviously if he was a smart ass in the end after you tried to help him that his Dad created an arrogent piece of dook.
I just want to say thank you for all you videos that you put out on youtube.. I have learned quite a bit from you.. and I learn the most from you photo critiques.. they are very informative:)
People like this make me sick. I'm 18 and still have my D60 which I have had for 3/4 years- I know it like the back of my hand. It's what you do with the camera and how you use it which makes great photos. I also studied photography for A Level and learnt jack s**t. I was telling the teacher what to do and teaching the class. Just the other day I got an email from a student in the year bellow requesting help, that says it all.
It's people like you Dom that have helped me since day 1, thank you
That e-mail gave me a good laugh. It reminded me of something I read on an online forum a while back. That person made a lot of fuzz when he could not find the memory card slot. On a Nikon F5 analog SLR he just bought...
As an ex mechanic, I've had to bite my tongue when blokes have said they didn't know what a spark plug is (for example). To me it's such a basic thing that I feel slapping some sense into them, but then I have to force myself to remember that I can't expect everyone to know the basics in something I know about.
Even if they can go to Google and find the answer within 30 seconds.
@mrman17 I think dom is right here, as i think your analogy is slightly off, a spark plug is to a car like the processor or AA filter or sensor is to a camera. there is lots to know about these things for sure, like there is about a car, but...you dont need to know what a spark plug or a gasket etc etc is to be an amazing driver, like you dont need to understand the algorithms for your sensors noise reduction is to take an amazing photo....(cont)
not understanding even remotely what "M mode" is and having a D3, is more like buying a Ferrari and not understanding what the pedals and the round thing sticking out of the dashboard are. I image Dom would of had a different response if he was talking about a d3100 as this is the first camera you might get and we all have to start somewhere, even though that would still be a little lazy as between the manual and the internet you should be able to figure this out :)
Do I detect a hint of jealousy, Dom? I have to ask: Would your reaction have been different if he was given a D5100? (Apart from it having a pop up flash).
But regardless, I *think* I would have replied saying these are very basic questions that would have been answered by reading the "flipping" manual.
I don't know, it's frustrating. or perhaps we take these things for granted when a complete newb asks us these basic questions?
@mrman17 noobs asking noob questions about their noob cameras is fine. But noobs asking Uber noob questions about their expensive very professional cameras piss me off.
@Dombowerphoto ...and you automatically assume it's some kid. Unless the email address had a birthyear that might as well be a woman in her 70's. Also being pissed off if wealthy people buy quality stuff? Wtf do you expect them to do? Buy D5100's or something???
@PsykoOps I didn't automatically assume anything. More detail were in his abusive email he sent back. But thank for automatically assuming that I automatically assumed...
@mrman17 Dom didn't go on some sort of 10min infantile tirade about it, he spoke his mind and elaborated on why he felt the way he did. It agitates me too when I have to save up for months to buy a new body, but the weekend warrior down the block just bought a Leica S2 that will sit in his closet for 350 days of the year. So for that guy its a whim.. for us, it's our job. Who do you think takes the better photograph in the end? And who gets more pleasure from the creative process? Him or me?
Dad gave a "D3". . . . welcome to life. I wish I had a D3 ;) In addition to Doms suggestions, I would say look at other photo's for ideas. I go through Flickr Expolere as often as possible, there are some great photo's there.
Hey Dom, I bought a D3s yesterday and I can't find the Landscape Mode...lol just kidding...I really hope that was a troll..otherwise it would be really sad :(
The best way for anyone to learn about their camera, Is to get out and take photos Then learn from your mistakes. And look at all the great vids from Dom Bower and others. Still, I'm sure his dad will get him the new Nikon d800 as a Back-up Camera. :-)
Hey Dom, i still hope that D3 Guy is just making a joke. Otherwise it is such a waste! But i like the way you take it serious and answer the question just in case this kid realy got a d3 and has no clue!
@marcusboos78 ;) maybe the first thing the D3 kid should do is getting to know the basics on how a camera works and then find his way around his D3... (and read the manual if he can't find something). Before I bought a DSLR (which is not the most advanced one the sony alpha 100) I had a Fujifilm S7600 on which I learned a lot (and I also found out photography can be fun)
I actually learned the most of the pictures that didn't get out as I wanted to (which forces me to search how to get it). I think most self taught photographers learn this way.
More money than brains!! That's like giving someone a Ferrari who doesn't even have a learner's

Him or me?

I would shoot his dad first for making his son an total idiot! Secondly I want his dad to be my dad :p

His dad was very cheap though, got him a used D3 with no pop up flash... (LOL)
Should have bought the D3s, I heard they gave it an update with a pop up flash (LOL again).
Or better, wait for the Nikon D4. I'm sure it will have standard pop up flash and AUTO mode...

Dad gave a "D3". . . . welcome to life. I wish I had a D3 ;) In addition to Doms suggestions, I would say look at other photo's for ideas. I go through Flickr Expolere as often as possible, there are some great photo's there.

The best way for anyone to learn about their camera, Is to get out and take photos Then learn from your mistakes. And look at all the great vids from Dom Bower and others. Still, I'm sure his dad will get him the new Nikon d800 as a Back-up Camera. :-)

if you do not anything about photography, a professional camera can actually make your picture look worse.

Hey Dom, i still hope that D3 Guy is just making a joke. Otherwise it is such a waste! But i like the way you take it serious and answer the question just in case this kid realy got a d3 and has no clue!
marcusboos78 3 months ago
@marcusboos78 ;) maybe the first thing the D3 kid should do is getting to know the basics on how a camera works and then find his way around his D3... (and read the manual if he can't find something). Before I bought a DSLR (which is not the most advanced one the sony alpha 100) I had a Fujifilm S7600 on which I learned a lot (and I also found out photography can be fun)
MrGirbes 3 months ago
@MrGirbes totaly agree he should learn the basics and shure an entry level camera would shure be the better choice to do so.
marcusboos78 3 months ago
Dom,
I actually learned the most of the pictures that didn't get out as I wanted to (which forces me to search how to get it). I think most self taught photographers learn this way.

hmmmm, it does look like a perfect recipe for a troll :p
