The sun is burning brighter and hotter, yet there are people living/working in sub-Saharan Africa in intense heat (+120 degrees) with no incidence of skin cancer. It's not quite like cigarettes, there, Jay. I got all my sun damage before there were sun screens, back in the late 50s and 60s. I was raised in southern Arizona and spent hours and hours outside in the summer, in swimming pools, walking around in the desert, bare skinned. Sunburned many times. As an adult, I've used sun screen, but for me, it's far too late though I can protect myself now. Damage is done, I have melanoma. Regardless of skin color, the sun damages skin. Period.
Sunscreen doesn't work on me. I'm Asian and avoid the sun most of the time. Spending Easter in Dubbo a regional town in NSW, I got severe sunburn from a short stay of merely 4 days and took days to recover. Tan skin is beautiful, but you need to protect yourself.

The sun is burning brighter and hotter, yet there are people living/working in sub-Saharan Africa in intense heat (+120 degrees) with no incidence of skin cancer. The small percentage of blacks who get skin cancer do so because they DO NOT GET ENOUGH sun, like those blacks living in Nordic countries. The pink/pale people get skin cancer from 2 much sun. I have autism, was diagnosed with the disability at age 4 (now I'm 30) before the current-day media hype on the ratio of new cases of autistic kids. Genes determine alot but not everything projected to occur in an individual' s health. I grew up in the Southern Cal. desert and never had a "serious" skin cancer, just a mole or two. My Mom is also from Sou. Cal. though she has 1/5 Cherokee Indian ancestry, but she developed skin cancer in her 40's and claimed for going to the beach as a teenager.

No YOU get to know your facts. We traded wine and rum for slaves because Africa's previous commodity supply (ivory) was running low compared to their demand for alcohol. They would capture men from other tribes and trade them with us as slaves. It's called the trans-atlantic slave TRADE for a reason. Melanoma is a rare skin cancer as it is; but this specific skin cancer causes the majority of skin cancer related deaths. Those deaths caused by melanoma are primarily found in the white race.

As an African American, I'm so glad that the least of my worries is "sunlight". I mean, how can you escape it? It's everywhere. And don't let people fool you with their generalizations about how blacks get skin cancer, too. The fact is skin cancer is uncommon in black people-- VERY uncommon. I've never met a black person in my life or in my great grandparent's life who have developed the disease. Skin cancer, however, is 1 of the top 3 killers of white people.

And no, it is also a lie that a cap and sunscreen is 100% protection against UV light. The only way whites can escape UV light is to stay inside-- and even that is not 100%. You need some form of sunlight to produce Vit D.

@mikedav9O bob marley died of black skin cancer. the fact is even though people with dark pigmentation are less likely to develop skin cancer they still can get it. the mean thing is that most african americans are unaware of that and don't controll themselves as often. that's why statistics say in comparison between dark pigmented and light pigemented people, the dark pigmented people are more likely the ones who sadly die of skin cancer because they often get treated too late.

I think black people know, although it is very unlikely, that they can develop skin cancer. The problem arises, however, when you white people try to generalize disease and make every black person believe that they are just as susceptible to the disease as whites when this is not the case. Melanoma whether you like it or not is a white disease.

It's not quite like cigarettes, there, Jay. I got all my sun damage before there were sun screens, back in the late 50s and 60s. I was raised in southern Arizona and spent hours and hours outside in the summer, in swimming pools, walking around in the desert, bare skinned. Sunburned many times. As an adult, I've used sun screen, but for me, it's far too late though I can protect myself now. Damage is done, I have melanoma. Regardless of skin color, the sun damages skin. Period.

Sunscreen doesn't work on me. I'm Asian and avoid the sun most of the time. Spending Easter in Dubbo a regional town in NSW, I got severe sunburn from a short stay of merely 4 days and took days to recover. Tan skin is beautiful, but you need to protect yourself.

Melanoma is very rare! Don't believe this horseshit! Yes, some people will get it. But very few! Certainly not a reason to stay out of the sun. The sun is necessary for good health. Sun tan sensibly. 1/2 hour a day in the noon day summer sun is enough a few days a week.
