  • I can't play nethack with vulture's eye, everything kind of gets in the way, and the camera position is just too awkward!

  • Ok, I found a fix for my problem. Running Vulture's Eye in compatibility mode for Win98/ME seems to make it work. Strange..

  • I'm getting the same problem as UltraMetaloid on my laptop running 32-bit Vista SP2. Funny thing is that it used to work - the copy of Vulture's Eye I have had been installed and working fine several months ago. I wonder if a recent Windows system update broke something.

  • @beerslayer2000 64-bit W7 here, Vulture's Eye runs perfectly fine, so no windows update killed it or anything.

  • I found the latest Vulture's Eye windows download but when I try to run the game I get a box saying "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close the application. I am running windows 7 and I have tried everything I can think of to get this to run and it wont. Does anyone know how to get this working?

  • Thank you, I knew Falcon's eye and through it was the last graphical interface for Nethack.

    I will try it!

Any solution to have patches with new monsters and functionabilities as in the Nethack regular version?

  • man this game is intense. the battles are so insane!

  • Is there another view? How can you know where you are if you can only see about 1/10th of the level.

  • there's a minimap that you're not seeing, thats being clipped off the video..

  • I see it in the upper right hand corner.

And I hope they managed to complete the tile sets, as Falcons Eye was still unfinished...

  • OMG thank you!!!!

I loved thus game on linux and now on windows.. wow thanks really!!!

  • I've tracked down the new download page and the link is in the description since I can't post URL's in the comments.

  • Anyone know where to get the windows version of this? I saw that there was a windows installer for it. But, I've been searching everywhere and they've all disappeared....

  • @judasatan

Sad to see. The last file I downloaded was called vultures-2.1.2-eye_win32-1.exe, it may help in the search. I think that may be just the Nethack game, I seem to remember the author didn't bundle the last version but I could be wrong. The SlashEM version seems to have been titled vultures-2.1.2-claw_win32-1.exe I could conceivably upload them but it'd take a long time on my connection.

  • YouTube inserts spaces into those lines, so you'll need to remove them when you run your search.

  • Thanks! :) I found the Vulture's eye windows version that works after a few dead ends.

    Damn, it's hard to find.

I was pretty close to setting up a Unix system on my PC just to play it. I'm sure with this information I could find the Vulture's claw Slash'EM version as well.

  • ....Or I could just click on the link in your video's info box.... ^_^;; Alot faster then running around google for hours...

  • @judasatan not to dsy WAREZ but i saw a copy on an ftp

  • Good for beginners, but I can't stand playing it like this personally, and I find it a little difficult with tiles too. Ascii is easier to read.

  • I can't imagine trying to play NH this way. Is it possible to zoom out and see more of the map? How can you complete Sokoban like this?

  • there's a minimap on the upper right corner of the screen, it helps some

  • there's a full map you can open up that takes up the whole screen. it has the little letters and everything.

  • VickAuc: what's the quest bug?

i must say vultures made it a bit easier for me to get into nethack, but i recently stopped playing it playing plain nethack with tiles. if anything noegnud's GUI makes it a bit easier to pick up nethack without having to memorize all the keyboard commands off the bat (lots of right clicking and bringing up menus with different actions in them). however i noticed that vultures games go a lot slower than plain nethack - takes longer to walk around. good to learn NH

  • When are they going to fix the quest bug?

  • how do i use this game? i am a nethack master, and i downloaded "vulture's eye" but i am confused. :(

  • No way...this doesn't have the same feel to it as playing the original =\.

  • Is that bad for new players? Nostalgia is great and everything, but I never would have started playing this game without Vulture's Eye. I like Nethack because of its complexity, difficulty, and depth; not because of the cheesy ascii interface. If you prefer the ascii you can play with the map up. The only complaint I have about the isometric view is that you can't see the whole level at once. Vultures is still being developed, so if you like it pitch in & help out :)

  • I prefer not seeing everything at once.

It's a little more immersive that way.

  • I prefer the tile version. It's clearer than Ascii and it's easier to see the whole room than this vulture's thing.

  • And it's a bigger strain on the eyes trying to read the tiny text, unless you use the 32x32 tiles in which case you're no longer seeing the entire map.

  • rulezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • Vulture's Eye is a remake of Falcon's Eye, since that project is dead, Vulture's Claw is Slash'em, a nethack variant. This game IS Nethack 3.4.3, it is merely a GUI wrapped around the original. The gameplay is no different from the original TTY nethack, only the way it looks and feels.

Anyway, it's the best nethack frontend/gui you'll find on linux, and I hope the developer gets around to making an Ubuntu package for the repository, since the old Falcon's Eye is still in there :\

  • It's also the best for Windows and Mac OSX. Not that I play it on my Windows home computer, Linux laptop, and work Mac.

  • Nethack 4ever!

  • Nethack kicks ass!! I loved falcon's eye, but this looks a little cruder than that. It's supposed to be better than it???

  • This is such a classic, but the graphics never do it justice. We need a modern 3d nethack with awesome graphics. I've never played oblivion or WoW, but they might have some roguelike aspects to them.

  • Diablo is reportedly the closest modern 3D thing to the old school roguelikes, but... the classic ASCII graphics are still the best way to play this game. Vulture's Eye had a *horrible* control mechanism that just didn't feel right...

  • Egoboo is the game you need. its the best roguelike game in the spirit of nethack which has good 3d graphics. dont believe me? just search egoboo in google and download it then tell me how it was.

  • its not roguelike at all, i do not know why people say it is

  • hmmm maybe you havent tasted it yet... but whatever, people think differently

  • i have played it. i wouldnt say its a bad game at all it just doesnt have any of the elements from roguelikes except a fantasy setting and an overhead view... its about as roguelike-like as neverwinter nights

  • hmmm well just try it out and then tell me if it is roguelike... because that game does have keys, chests, maps, traps, enemies, buttons, puzzles, etc. that is all the spirit of nethack

  • i have played it and no it isnt, not at all

  • i'm talking about egoboo, dummy, not this

  • I'd say ASCII is the best way to play roguelikes, but I'm perhaps saying that out of familiarity. As an Angband player, the only alternative is to play with horrible little indiscriminate tiles.

I've always found Nethack full of obscure little annoyances, and some pervasive big annoyances too.

  • angband can be beaten by a bot

so basically what i'm saying is your brain is inferior

  • True enough, vanilla Angband is really just the skeletal system for all those variants. I like Zangband myself.

Right now though, I'm trying to get into Dwarf Fortress.. There's a pretty big learning curve though,.,
