Hmmm, I wouldn't need to lay in a ditch is I simply crouched down and took the shot with out looking through the view finder.
Just because a camera has a view finder, doesn't mean it must be used. Try framing and shooting by eye with out the viewfinder and you'll save getting dirty.
@Steaphany Getting dirty is one of the first things I teach anyone who's starting in photography. Don't be afraid to get dirt on your little sissy pants, get on the ground, on the sand, inside water and your passion will show through your pictures.
@rokoksejuk Point the camera to the sky (on P mode or equivalent) only, look at the camera reading, then set your camera to manual with these settings.
@LAtrailers yes you can, but I always mess up with AE lock. The advantage of digital is that you can take the shot and if you know your LCD you can chimp it. so 1 or 2 stops under will be very noticable, and can be corrected on the fly.
Slowly but surely, I'm gettin' Bryan's techniques!

tilting lcd saves a lot of laying in ditches, water, dirt, sand, etc... and you can still frame/compose perfectly without guessing... :)

@minduinfix you don't even own a camera. Quit taking up space here. Like a dang bug you have to swat at because it's annoying.

'Lay down in a ditch and you keep shooting shooting' sounds like something an officer would say to the troops defending a position.
