Web sites aren't communities but they are locations where communities can arise. It's so easy to move, online communities tend to become very homogenous though. It takes a lot of effort to keep it from smothering itself in orthodoxy.

Most of us are older, we are interested in politics and become good friends and support one another. YouTube gets a bad name because so many sites sound like many of the people here, unfortunately. There are interesting, talented and educated people communicating with one another here.
It depends on the "negative comments." Comments where people engage in discussion of differing points of view are fine, but calling one another "gay." or "fat," or "stupid," or "boring" and so on are just a kind of "dissing" contest and do not create a "community" only anger. So YouTube just becomes a place for people to vent their anger anonymously.

People who drop in and just watch videos and make comments certainly do not make a community. However, those who participate in channels get to know one another on another more intimate level. I watch videos at times, some are great, but I usually check into several channels and I have made friends there.

Anthrovlog: continued; as you can see most of the comments are negative, a "dissing" contest. I have had a rather different experience. Most of us are older, we are interested in politics and become good friends and support one another. YouTube gets a bad name because so many sites sound like many of the people here, unfortunately. There are interesting, talented and educated people communicating with one another here.

It depends on the "negative comments." Comments where people engage in discussion of differing points of view are fine, but calling one another "gay." or "fat," or "stupid," or "boring" and so on are just a kind of "dissing" contest and do not create a "community" only anger. So YouTube just becomes a place for people to vent their anger anonymously.

Without that contrast, they would just be "comments". Neutral. Not good, nor bad. Which is quite boring. Everything would just even out into shades of gray.

You are forgeting that their is a third way where comments are neither "bad" nor "good" but informative. Having a comment such as "slut" adds NOTHING to the discourse. Or "gay" adds nothing to the discourse, these are useless comments. Comments regarding appearance are also unnecessary, its just a dig and nothing more. Interesting comments ADD to the conversation.

Vilsefint, I wouldn't say its completely necassary. I think the defining aspect is 'constant social interaction,' Still, actual contact would be good. But showing your face on your vids and constantly chatting does make it a community. Its just a newer, different type, so people will be less accepting to the idea.

I have (partly) therefore defined a view that I think would pertain better too generalized spiritual thinking. In my view, the number eighteen represents three perspectives, two of which are the same.

The two similar perspectives clarifies zero-sum thinking, because each side of the zero-sum game would be representeed by one such perspective. But the third, different perspective is in itself that sort of two-dimensional, i.e. zero-sum, which turns the understanding of zero-sum problematic into something wanting to be zero-sum-problematic just the same. this would pertain to hate, I think.
In such a way I have defined hate in a way that hopefullly would be better for all.

vilsefint: Unfortunately our whole system is focused on "zero-sum" thinking, the idea that if one gains the other must lose. It is the problem of dichotomies which are either/or as opposed to both/and. It is a mind-set that creates conflict. I usually prefer the "Third way;" win-win.

When you focus totally on zero-sum thinking, that pertains to three two-dim perspectives, eight-dim all in all. Win-win thinking pertains to an odd number for your perspective. But some win-win perspectives also contain the possibility of zero summing, but not as a necessity, and can thus be unfair to those treated by that (zero-sum) rule.

I appreciate your very observant comment. Another option would be to avoid getting an account and simply watching without expressing opinions to and connecting with others. I think that people have different opinions about whether YouTube is a community. Yet, I think a certain group can still be said to be a community even though people may have different levels of commitment to it.

There's more of substance to be learned about how the YouTube community (or non-community or network, whichever term you prefer) interacts or chooses not to, merely in analyzing a cross-section of these comments than there is in interviewing people who have a bias toward the 'community' argument in that they were all attending a YouTube gathering.
