Where did you get the Pigmy Rattle snake? Ive been researching them for years and already have a Copperhead for my first beginner venomous snake and i have had it for 2 years but i cant seem to find where i can pick up a Pig Rattler. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
is it for looking at like a decoration? cos like you said when you comented on other peoples coments and also where do you live to be laws that allow a rattle snake cos i like in florida and where i live its illegal
Available on the web or reptile shows which deal with venomous stuff, like in Hamburg Pa on April 25 for instance. Be sure you're aware of local laws before you buy one.
wow that was cool you can see he bit the mouse fast then the mouse completely shut down thats awsome stuff i mean nature is crazy but cool and interesting
It eats about once every 2 weeks. Snakes are cheap to keep pretty much after you buy the tank and bedding and food ocassionally. I have 3 pigmys, one Dusky, one Carolina and one Western pigmy. I've never been bitten by any venomous snakes (the word is venomous, not poisonous)
#1 - Its hard to say sometimes and depends on the snakes venom type. In this case, the venom affects the mouse's blood and muscles, so the mouse probably has a heart attack or massive hemorrhage inside. Not eaten alive. A cobra has a neurotoxic venom though, and it's possible it's prey get eaten while still conscious.
#2 & #3 - The snakes digestive system breaks down the venom, bones, hair, everything and very little comes out as fecal matter. Thanks for being curious!
No, I've never been bitten. If they bite, YES it hurts, you'd have to go to the hospital.
No, they dont snap at the tank when I walk by, she's pretty laid back actually. They cost around $200 right now. I'm not afraid it'll get out of the tank, it's secure. It cant "eat me", it's only about 10 inches long.
Well, it's venomous, so I treat all my venomous the same. With extreme caution. Overkill I'd say. It's a fairly calm snake though in the cage, it doesnt freak out when I'm near the tank. It's a vicious eater though. All snakes are different though. Prices on carolina pigmys are coming down a bit too. I have a buddy who has some Ga. locale animals, but I dont think he's got any to sell right now.
look at my video response and let me know if you think I had a wild encounter with a pigmy rattler at Caledesi Island near Clearwater Beach, somebody told me it was, but since you have one you would be able to tell.
I remember I had to edit the video because it got too big, so I cut out the long dying scene of the mouse. IIRC it was something like 5 minutes. I've had that snake for YEARS and it's never been interested in prekilled food. I wish it would at least try it once or twice hehe. It would save me a lot of trouble since I have about 500 frozen mice in my freezer.
Heh, wow. Last year I captured a small constrictor; I think it was some sort of corn snake. I bought a couple of pinkies to feed it, but it wound up eating while I wasn't watching, which was a bummer. I let the snake go after several days, since my cat was terrified of it, and I knew it would be better off in the wild. Besides, I personally don't really have the heart to feed one creature to another, even if the former -is- already dead and frozen. :P
Cute how the tank next door has another (snake?) watching the fun - looks hungry, too. :-)

hey man how do you clean the tank without getting bitten? I'm assuming you don't handle the snake since its venemous.
Buttertoast57 3 years ago
You assumed correctly! Open the cage, hook the snake out into a 5 gal bucket, clean the cage and hook the snake back into the tank.

#1. At what point is the mouse dead? After he stops moving? Or is he paralyzed & eaten alive?
#2. Does the venom in the mouse get re-absorbed in the snake's system, or where does it go after the mouse is digested?
#3. What happens with the mouse's bones?
I'd like to have a snake, someday.

I absolutely do not handle my venomous snakes at all. There's no reason to. I use snakehooks and tongs to manage them.

You must have, it happens around the 10-11 second mark.

Holy crap, that's what that was! Wow. How long did it take for the mouse to die from the venom?
