USE 3 photo's and open all three in photoshop and set the EV to -2 0 +2 then use that in photomatix so simple

Funny, thats what I was doing when I first starting using photomatix but you can make an HDR with one image.

What is the purpose of using the same exact image layered twice? Results look pretty good for a single jpg!
Photomatic won't allow you to do HDR with just one JPEG file, so that's why you make two of it to trick it.
