  • nice one. clocked this game not a few times in my mind-teens. the freeze game glitch was pretty easy to induce on the first wave.

  • Why is it blue?

  • i used to be very good at Defender as a kid (clocked it 6 times in one game) but i see you do the common thing of blasting all your 'humans' down to just the one (playing safe i used to call this) i can't see the point tbh as this just means less points at the end of every wave which means its takes longer to clock.Another good way to rack up points was to 'baiter starve' by leaving just one bomber at the end of a level and wait for the baiters to come on,take them out one by one no probs.......

  • I wanted to eat at a local pizza parlor all the time, just because they had a defender cabinet.

  • OMG!!This takes me back a few years !! LOVE IT!!! The sounds were awesome then as they are now!!

  • brings back great memories. can still see the scar on my forefinger from smashing the plexiglass logo up above with my fist when I was pissed I got blown up one game. 1980!

  • you're good...i've only been playing for a week

  • Nice machine ya got there playboy...

I'll do some Defender Stargating on my rare Williams CT version once I find a camcorder and tripod that can handle the angle.

    Great game- cheers!

  • Best sound effects in a game ever!

  • @sinbad0910 You, my friend, truly understand Defender. Many may like Defender but not quite yet know why. Well stated. The sound addiction started the moment you dropped the quarter into the game. You just earned a Smart Bomb. Speilberg understands sounds. Basic sounds and entertainment will move mountains.

  • Not smart to carry your last guy around, as you will eventually shoot him when the computer bogs down

  • lol.... i so use to play this game when i was young

  • if anyone out there has the original arcade Defender i would love to purchase it!...someone in new zealand of course!...

  • @outlawhansolo007 I have it, but in Canada. If you have 1 zillion dollars, then prove it to me and then we can begin negotiations.

  • They tend to sell for between £1000-£1500 . One for sale on ebay for £1500 but it didnt sell at that price (credit crunch and all that)

  • Thanks for posting this. Playboynumberone, do you know what the game is now worth? I've read they are rare.

  • @EricGoBlue I share my same gratitude for the post of this video. But to answer your question of what it is worth...Ever hear of the Mona Lisa?

  • great vid man

All I remember about 1982 at this point is constantly hanging out at the 7-11 playing Defender and Tempest etc, 49 cent Big Gulp and 39 cent chili cheese dog in hand.

    Man those were simple times.

  • then again i suppose it was the old trick kill all but one of them so you dont have to deal with mutants.

  • 1.57 oops poor human.

Ace video though man, i loved this as a kid but wasnt very good on very rare occasions i could reach the 5th wave, id love to see those mad players who used to dominate the score boards with the score of 9,999,975.

  • @METAL1ON

Tell me about it- I'd like to see those kinda players too that could destroy it back in the day.

  • PAGHEREI 100euro x una partita!

  • I think the whole attraction of this game was the rapid fire guns. All the games before this always had the wimpiest speed and control. Except for Galaga.

  • @ArizonaDelRio Galaga is Defenders retarded brother. Just joking. Galaga rocked too. I remember seeing Space Invaders at a hotel near Disney Land when I was 12 or 13 and while my family were riding silly Disneyland rides, I was instantly hooked on Space Invaders. I returned to Canada and was telling my buddies about this 'game' and I couldn't describe its awesomeness. A year later, it finally got to Canada and I was saying "See, I toad a so, I freekin' toad a so". The rest is history.

  • @ArizonaDelRio Wrong! The appear of the game is the subtle marching into the earth from those pink silly cowards while we rocked the night air.

  • @swassontelus spellcheck please...I meant to say...the "appeal of the game..."

  • best 80s arcde game by far!

  • Superb game, great to smart bomb the pods at the start.

  • go hyperspace man...nuke they bastardos...TEH HORIZONATL SCROLLIGN GMAE

  • Comment removed

  • The most satisfying sounds effects of any video game ever.

  • this game was the shitzbiz - i loved it...there was a great clone on the BBC micro

  • Class. If I remember correctly , it was Landers, Mutants, Bombers, Pods, Swarmers and of course Baiters.

Sometimes you just got lucky and no swarmers escaped when you 'smarted' the pods. Reversing at the same time helped.

  • wow! i love this game. to have ur own original machine must be bliss!

  • Lets face it - when the screen is full and you let off a SB...everything goes into slow mo and you hyper out of there. Feels good!!!!!!Yeeeahhhhhh Baaaaabbbbyyyy!!!

  • Dude, I have a illegal "Defence Command" game. Some "friends" of my dad went to prison for this but I have a hell of a good time playin this thing.Have been playing this machine since 1981.They made a game called "Puc Man" too.Off to the big house, morans.

  • I used to smoke weed and play this in 1982 while listening to Ozzy "Diary Of A Madman" on my Sony Walkman tape player.

  • @TheGringoLoco Did you eat WigWags too? Note: WigWags were like caramel shoestrings covered in chocolate and when you tried to pull it apart to share with your buddy, it would turn your parents shag carpet into a shiticane.

  • I cracked 3.5 mil on that baby .... hrs of playing the screen went blank

  • Classic strategy - hang around the top, pick off the greens, collect the pods, clump and deposit. Flick turn mutants in an instand and save the smart bombs until the screen is absolutely full.

  • Man I love your comment. After 25 years of Defender I know exactly what you mean. You lear the tricks, like busting open a pod and just following and picking.Or catching saucers as they spawn.Soooo fun.

  • I'll give you $5000.00 for that unit right now.

  • Why were you shooting your own men?

  • I think he had already "flipped" it and the blue level had few humans....er wait a minute...let me think

  • That way you do not have to look after them. Just keep one alive so you can fly around without the annoying mutants attacking you.

  • All you need is a playstation one or two with a memorycard of the ps1. Add a Namco arcadestick. Buy the game called Williams arcade's greatest hits and you are set to go. I scored over a million more than once on the original but this comes very close to the real thing. I play it every day for 30 minutes.

  • Great game!

I used to play on this machine, and my challenge was puttinig my nick on the Hall of fame with 999.975 points...

Once I turned 3 times the pontuation, making 3,000 000 points but I was so bored that I passed the game to someone that was waiting for a long time to play.. lol

    Bing Defender back!!!!!

    Hasta

  • 1 million one ship i dont think so!I turn the machine over many times but the most i got one ship is like 200,000!I spent a good part of young youth playing this game and many others game! They just dont make them like this anymore!Nice Post!

  • Nice work!

  • Anybody know where theres a functioning defender & like era machines in the UK? Have searched hi & lo at all the seaside resorts Blackpool Brighton etc but to no avail.

  • i sucked at this game :(

  • That's a HUGE CRT lol

  • Man i spent so much money on this game, hahaha, those sounds bring back so many memories of the arcade days, when you'd have a whole crowd watching some one good

  • why is he shooting at the men he's supposed to be protecting--is he in a rush to wind up in hyperspace???

  • It is a strategy. The idea is to keep just one man alive, that way you will not be hassled by the mutants which are a pain in the butt.

  • Have you heard of this dude who played Defender PROFESSIONALLY. As you people have said, probably the best arcade game EVER. Required technique and made you think strategy and tactics.

  • this was back in the day when video games were programmed in assembler on machines with 4k of memory. and the sounds! fuck HD surround sound bullshit, I want cheap 8 bit digital screaming at me in a sweaty dark room smelling of smoke and doritos.

  • @alloowishus all the way...

  • @alloowishus You just painted the perfect afternoon. Except replace nasty Doritos with Fries and Gravy.

  • I apologize. To be honest, I do not remember dying in the first million points. Is that the same as NOT dying in the first 1M, no, it is not. I was there, and even I do know for sure. But I swear, as sure as I am typing this, I do not recall dying in the first 1M. I believe I was going to run over and tell the arcade operator, but I figured they had seen me so much in the arcade, I should have rightly been paying them rent, and it would not have fazed them at all. Thats the account.

  • I think you mean first 100,000 bro. I play Defender and knowfor a fact 1,000,000 no death is imposible. BTW. I can do millions on Defender too.

  • @ericliddell Cheers! I think the Internet needs more spellchecking.

  • @teddymills You, sir, have Selective Spacial Amnesia. Please move over and play Ms. PacMan from here on out.

  • ha ha, gotta love all the bragging! Just like old times. Man, those Defender sound effects were just da biz, even now after all these years and just watching the video I get an adrenalin rush! Very advanced game play at the time and very clever design all round. My all time favourite arcade game.

  • Wasted lunch times memories are rushing back.... I was always crap at it but it was my favourite game!

  • I was quite good at this game. I often rolled the extra lifes, and bombs over (8-bit counter of 256). My best accomplishment was I got to 1,000,000 points without dying once. I figured I was probably the best player in the world at that particular time.

  • yer ok sure u did...........my top score is only 11,175,125...it took me 6 hrs...

id pay cash to see u get 500k one man...

  • Like I said, I was pretty good at Defender. Remember when you could keep the green saucers at bay, no matter how many where on the screen? It would slow the game down? Do you even know what I am talking about? Well I am not 17 years old anymore. But believe what you want. I got to a million points without dying. I dont need to convince you. I was there.

  • u wanna play poker........coz yer full of it...but i like yer style..

  • @cunthooks657 Poker? Poker? Poker is for those who were kicked off the Volleyball towel boy team who were beggin' to get to become the Ultimate Towel boy to wipe the local Defender Champion's brow as he graced the galaxy protecting your right to bring a towel to the battle. (yes, I am drunk on Rum remembering Defender).

  • @swassontelus ...i bet you clocked a defender when it was set at 20k per bonus ship....

  • @teddymills I think a Baiter took you onto their ship and did things to you. Unmentionable things. Maybe they gave you blueprints for futuristic weapons?

  • why aren't any of you suckers at the Funspot contests? I just placed 2nd in the Defender contest and only one other 1,000,000 defender player showed. come on peeps.. show your love for Defender... GO TO FUNSPOT!

  • Las Vegas odds give Eric Liddell even money on achieving both the Defender and Stargate WR's at California Extreme. My $ is down, I hope yours is too. Good luck... - Marc

  • what is the world record on startgate?

  • Bro...Your sniff'in glue if you think you got 1,000,000 on a single ship. The Twin Galaxies "5 man only" world record is only 230,000.

  • 230k? Are you serious? I would usually lose the first man at 300-400k. I told you I was good at this game. Think what you want. I did this at North Bay Ontario, on the arcade on Main Street, beside the orange taxi stand. THe arcade no longer exists. I went by there just 2 weeks ago. I was 17 then. As I said, think what you want. I was there, You were not. Case closed. Tired of replying to your disbelief.

  • Believe what you want Eric.

    Bored with this thread.

  • I'm not saying your a bad player... I'm sure your a decent enough player..

but you can't bullshit other master Defender players.

I'll pay-pal you $1,000.00 if you can get 200,000 on a single man. should be no problem for you. big talker...

tape it and post it... put up or shut up. such a bullshitter.

    1,000,000 - 1st man. Bahahahaha!

  • I got 125K on a single man on my 750K and a bit more....Scores on my machine....

  • @teddymills I am from Canada and while I can't confirm a fellow Canadian getting a million points on his first man, I will confirm that while I am not a 999,975 player, I got to about 600,000 and instead of aiming for the 999k, I instead would play crosshand (where the left hand played the right controls and the right hand would play the left controls), just to be able to play my buddies. I eventually got to about 300,000 using this method. Besides we here in Canada created the Iroquois engine

  • I have a Defender machine too, i play it ever day. I can still get 1,000,000 to this day. old skool. ERic L.

  • The old ones are still the best, as far as Defender goes anyway. What about going for 10 pickups in the 1st Round then land with as many Baiters as you can handle swarming about, causing the game to freeze? Or I could just get me anorak and do one...

  • @marshallamp So true...so so true. Remember hearing the quiet when you hovered around the lone pink walker and all were blasted.....and then the Baiter would appear. Sheer bliss. Kind of wonder if that is going on above our heads without us knowing? ha ha

  • some nice moves there mate, especially with the bombers. i was a decent player also, just over 5 million. watching you there was a buzz. them baiters were bastards though were'nt they? lol

  • this brings back lots of memories. I used to play Defender so much and got so good at it I would just walk away from it I had so many lives left. Once you get good enough at these games it really becomes an endurance issue to get the high score. I probably suck big time at it now, but those sound effects still bring back good memories of the 80's and the glory days of arcade games. :)

  • @JohnTheMutt Perfection.....your description is perfect. The sounds are the best. Its funny, today, millions are spent on sounds (whether concerts or radio) but the most basic sounds persist. I think there should be a video game that focused on Scottish bagpipes.

  • I got so good at Stargate & Defender that 1 quarter lasted me many hours. I believe I had the world high score on Stargate of 12million points.

I eventually did buy a Stargate machine but it only works 70% of the time, needs work.

But boy, I would be interested in going to a tournament for this game and stargate, that would awesome.

  • i kicked this games ass.would be on this game for hrs and hrs and hrs.where can i get one of these games.this is gaming.listen to the buttons.the power.cause an effect.fuck with my people eat a missle.

  • Why don't we all set up a world-wide all time Defender championships?...Perhaps it could be held in the USA..around the same time to coincide with the annual arcade event in California,August '08..All the crem de la crem Defender legends of the UK,USA,and Japan etc competing in a battle of the greats!!...Could you imagine it!!.Who's interested?..Any ideas?

    It can happen!

  • p.s. using a smart bomb on the first round??? very lame indeed! No excuses before 150,000+ points.

  • i love the opening sound. this game was my life for several years when i was a kid. In those days I could play for many hours non-stop on a single credit.

  • this and robotron ruled! Growing up in the 80's rocked!!! I'll never forget seeing either of them for the first time.

  • My favorite game during my teens. This and Stargate

  • Dude... got my heart pounding... had the game, but sold it last year... got pretty good at it... wondering if you're in LA / Hollywood area... would want play doubles and compare skills.... this has got to be THE BEST arcade game ever! Thanks for posting. You have very good technique, control, and reflex.

  • need to check out stargate.thats defender on steroids.

  • i'll second that about stargate - I've got one of those over on my youtube.

nice defender machine you have and good playing. cool too see other defender players out there.

  • Sweet! Where did you get it from?

  • Gotta get one!!

  • Cool to see, got more sweet firefights?
