@0xoLOKiTAox0 Not true. Sam RECORDED this song about 4 months BEFORE his son drowned; he recorded this song in February of 1963. It was just an ironic occurence that this song rang true upon his son's death (his son Vincent died at 18 months old in June 1963). And Sam's partner JW Alexander wrote this song, not Sam.
@indure08 Thanks for clarifying that....I had wondered if the "baby" in this song was his lover or his son. (Also, I think this recording, perhaps due to the minimal accompaniment, exemplifies the sheer beauty of his voice perhaps more than any other.
@moraldo82 ...watch the story of his life and it says different?... Not really sure what that means. The truth is what I previously detailed. There's another song that's confusing as well; The Riddle song. Sam didn't write the song, but recorded it before Vincent died, and yet again after his death. Some say he criedin studio while recording it after Vincent died. There's footage of him performing the song live as well (The Jerry Lewis show, 12/63).
This song is the intersection of soul and the blues. 'Nuff said.

As someone once said about Blind Willie Johnson's slide guitar playing, this cannot be improved upon even in one's imagination.
