saw then in our local theatre several years ago They didn't sing this song but the whole show music and interaction was great. Seems that together they are best both are unique if that's good English.
@Marusurf A friend found it in four minutes flat. It is a traditional mining song called 'Shosholoza' originally from Zimbabwe (when it was Rhodesia) and very popular in South Africa. It is on Wikipedia.
Thanks for the chance to see and hear them ... outstanding video of outstanding performance! Such a powerful and beautiful song, and John's gorgeous guitar and vocal accompaniment are lovely! Grateful to have seen them 'live' in all their glory, in the past, wish we here in U.S. could see them on tour again!
I have been a fan for about 40 years now yet never saw the lads live. My last chance got snowed out (sigh).
Eric & John did a DVD about a year ago - best concert DVD I own. The closed with Singing The Spirit Home - best version yet - sent shivers up your back.
I won't post any - go buy it! I had to get it from Scotland!
@rdvqc What's the DVD called mate ? I'd like to get a copy, like you I never got to see them live. If you had to get yours from scotland then I shouldn't have too much of a problem since I live there.
@KennyT1955 It is called "Eric Bogle Live at Stonyfell Winery" which, according to Eric's site, is available through Greentrax Recordings, Scotland. I got my copy from MusicScotland - they have excellent international service - even give prices in currency of your choice.
Saw him at the queens hall in edinburgh and managed to video Waltzing Matilda. My special memory of seeing them live. This song is absolutely brilliant and I love the ending especially. Amazing.
i love this song, reminds me of my dad, makes me think of happy times of him singing it and playing on his guitar...courage! xx

Wonderful! Does anyone have words and ideally translation for the song John sings at the end?

Saw Eric and John at the last European show ever on Fri 11 Sept 09 Peebles.Absolutely brilliant-a pleasure and honour to have been there.
He sang this for me!(Iasked him at the interval)
The greatest folk singer songwriter of all time.
He should be world famous because of writing songs like this and "the band played waltzing Matilda"
Enjoy your retirement Eric!

Entirely possible this could be the best song Eric's ever written .... and he wrote No Man's Land and The Band Played Waltzing Matilda!
Awesome again fellas. Hope to catch you on the final UK tour.
