When I was 'doing' theatre studies at Tech in 1981/2 I had to do a project on one theatre. I chose the Bear and Staff, Charing X Rd. The director there was thoroughly unpleasent, I wish I had known of your theatre!
@andrewnorris2 Yes, Michael Almaz, I knew him, director and writer. From Tel Aviv originally I think. Those days one got to know everybody on the Fringe though I never actually worked with him or on any of his plays
@andrewnorris2 Aha! Well as it happened The Soho Poly was still putting on plays and would do for another drawing 10 years or so with a succession of different directors, despite Verity's death in '81. Then after a homeless period and following a successful Site Specific season, building work began in 1997 to create a new 144 seat auditorium, studio theatre and writers’ centre on the site of a defunct Synagogue. A site which had been once a concert venue and Mozart ....(Contd)
@andrewnorris2 (Conc) himself performed there. In March 2000, the Soho Theatre thanks to one of the country’s most innovative National Lottery projects opened the Soho Theatre + Writers’ Centre. The project took six years, was completed within the original budget and, from that time, the Company has grown from an organisation employing five people with a turnover of £250,000 to one which employs 22 full time staff and has a turnover approaching £2 million. So......acorns or what?
@Caspar33 Yes, that is pretty amazing. I wrote a second note saying that the director I was 'interviewing' was called Michael Almez. Did you know him?
@Poemsapennyeach Thanks! I don't think so. I didn't have much to do with film. Though she may well know Sandra Frieze who has worked for years in that biz. I'll take a look at the new one.
I like this version, too. How was it working with Diana Quick? I liked her in her TV work way back in the day--haven't seen her much in film/TV lately. Keep up the good work. So nice to see shades of your previous theater experiences.
@HerAeolianHarp Thanks! Spot the differences? Well 'The Queen' was in 2009, (T.V. series) and I see there is a new film in the pipeline called 'Mother's Milk' with Margaret Tyzack..
This moves me to see about registering for a week with the Shakespeare Theater in Ashland----we loved it last year-----a rich experience to see our human nature out there in front of us on stage. Not the same as reading about it.
