  • Can this still be downloaded and is it playable on newer pc's?

this was my first PC game back on my old piece of shit Compaq Presario. 25 Mhz, 105mb HD, 4 megs of ram woooo!

  • damn its been ages!! GOOD GAME!!

  • this game is epic !!!

  • Fang the dragon, uhh more like Fang the badass!

  • Great video... I shudder to think how many hours (probably measured now in "months") I've put into this game since it first came out. It's always one of the first things that gets installed on any new PCs that I get.

  • Oh holy crap! I have been trying to remember what this game was called for ages now, and here I find it just by random YouTube surfing! Thanks so much...I wonder if GOG has this...?

  • @TreJowy Welcome, another MoM fan. :-)

  • @TreJowy GOG does have MOM but you probably know that by now.

  • lol merlin at 2:00

  • I found you , game !!!!! I loved this game.. even made wallpaper with all the summonings of demons and monsters hehe =D

  • i really need to play this.

  • THE LIGHT SABRE!

  • This game was marvelous at its time! And in some aspects still is :D

  • For some time in my life I was writing a fantasy book and I played hours per day of MoM because it gave me inspiration to write.

  • Thanks for sharing this! Great game!

  • This looks cool. I'm researching older games to find one as good as Master of Orion 2. When I researched the developers of MoO2, I came across this game. I'll have to try it!

  • On what are you running this ?

  • I'm crying.. I have an original copy of this game !!!!

  • thumbs up if this is better than starcraft

  • This Was My Favorite Game Also... Just Was Talking About It With Friends.. My Disk Copy Was Always Mildly Corrupt So It Crashed Near 'The End' Of The Game... Thank U for This XD

  • I like to stick as much +to moves mods on items as possible. Tern when your heroes are not fighting is a wasted turn.

Putting mana base to spell research or mana points is a waste too. You have gold-tomana conversion for dirst and research building for second. Spell power all the way.

  • Yeah, i play this first time one week ago.

Best game ever, with Dwarf Fortress and Osu! .

    The end.

  • You play so much different I did. I always raised a few spirits and sent them out revealing the entire map. I'd also only keep a couple spearmen in cities to defend and use the terrain advantages as best as possible. You could get armor piercing defenders up in experience really good. Then I'd pull in as many heros as possible and send them out experiencing campaigns. You're showing the bottom map. Once you get in the upper plane the game gets fun.

  • This is the bast game ever! if never realy gotten very far in one game but I really want too.

  • I have this on a ancient Pentium laptop, great game, i remember using various spells to make flying ships at one point and being just about invincible, and making cool weapons for the heroes. I'll have to fire it up again!

  • Fang is the shit.

  • I have this game but I am unable to play it on my windows xp. it says it requires EMS.

  • @swimguy I think you can set it up through DoxBox to run. Personally, I just paid the 4$ or whatever it was to download it from "Classic Gaming Presents". It installs DosBox, and gets everything working with very little tinkering. It worked on my XP install, and it still works for me in Vista.

  • I have this game but I am unable to play it on my windows xp. it says it requires EMS.

  • Awww. Landreux thought he had it all going where he wanted.

  • can someone tell me where i can get this game im getting addicted just by watching videos :D

  • The best place to get this game and lots of other old games is gog.com for $6.

  • How do you get it to run so fast?

  • This game and the Warlord's game absolutely rocked my world for ages. The little gnome slingers when properly enchanted were the strongerst units in the game. the thing is, you can play it so many different ways, and it didn't seem to get tired.

  • Master of magic was truly one of the great classics of Dos.

if you guys get laggy performance using dosBox, try setting the cpu core to dynamic, cpu type to 486, and cycles to max in the config file. Game will usually run much much faster.

  • Great game

  • I remember a demo-copy of this game coming with the magazine "PC gamer" fitted one one single Floppy disk. Retro games are truely the best.

  • i still have this relic of gaming

i NEVER get tierd of it

I like to use chaos magic and cast chaos rift and corruption

when things get hairy i cast the most annoying spell ever: great wasting

i love to just pile on the great drakes too

  • Hate the Chaos Spawn. Its Doom Gaze does damage to you, no matter what enchants or resistance you have..

It can even defeat a super powered Torin that doesn't use his brain and healing between attacks.

  • @LTDANMAN44 Thanks a lot, I'll try that next time I play MoM

  • LOL @ 2:10

  • I think this game is the prequel of Heroes of Might and Magic no? I played the first HOMM, the second, third and fourth.. and I see a lot of elements the developers got from this game.

  • YOU!!! YOU DESTROYED MERLIN!!?? WHAT I WILL DO NOW!!! ARRRGHHH!!!

  • yes, best strategy game ever.

  • IMO this is the best fantasy strategy game ever. Unbeatable in terms of variety of races and spells. It has more strategy depth than AoW or HoMM.

  • bought this on GOG.com glad to play on windows 7, this game made me late for work today jesus

  • This game > HoMM

  • I remember when this game first came out. My uncle brought me a copy and I played it for hours on end. I was only 12 at the time but all I could think about while at school was my army. Its weird.

  • Just watching this again made me realize how short elemental came...this 10MB game owned a 3GB game hands down!

  • @JeremyL1983 Actualy, 25 MB ;-)

  • @JeremyL1983 Yeah, agreed.

Elemental is getting better but it still feels way too much like Civ, the immersion in magic just isn't there. It needs more basilisks/dragons/summoning spells, useful enchantments, spell skill etc!

  • @JeremyL1983

Elemental (at time of writing) is on patch 1.19J - and is still a bug ridden mess. Counting the beta releases it's been (I think) 17 patches in 7 months - and the forums are STILL full of people with the same OOM/CTD/Freeze errors as day one. I'd be sorry for them - but once they get the game working it's not worth all the effort anyway. The AI is terrible and the gameplay mechanics are dreadful.

MoM is still playable and a great game!

  • @longbendy81 Well, what to say my friend. The gaming world I left long time ago, because something, that I call skill, or wisdom, have been lost somewhere, and it doesn't empower my soul and heart with feeling, the games once did. The only thing that remained is addiction, but fabulous emotions are gone. These videos I've put here, was my memory of good old times, in time, when I've started to realize this fact. My dream was to produce such games, but there are no condition to work on it.

  • @JeremyL1983 I still play this game today. I want them to remake the game in todays grafix, but don't change anything!

  • @LTDANMAN44 couldn't agree more!! MOM with today's graphics! damn, I'd buy a collector's edition...

  • @LTDANMAN44 Seems interesting. Did you already begin, or project is only in your head? What programming tool are you planning to use?

  • @warrax111 warrax I don't own the license so I cannot do anything :(. But, if you search online you can find patches to the old game that correct alot of errors and make the game more fun! google master of magic unofficial patch v1.40f that patch is my favorite it corrects alot of broken things

  • I played thoses only a little but... aren't "Age of wonders", AoW2 & AoW2SM some sort of sequel ?

  • @balmipour some sort yes, but it doesn't reach greatness of this jewel.

  • @warrax111

    better than AoW? Whaaa

  • @warrax111 ... though they don't crash as often as MoM ;)

  • @balmipour lol no

the only thing aow has thats similar to mom is its turned based and you can cast spells

  • Ah, this video brings back so many great memories. I almost gave up on the initial release because it crashed so often, but then, using my 14.4kbps modem (that I'm sure I paid almost $100 for), I dialed into Microprose's BBS (website? what's a website?) and downloaded the 1.3x patch. Between this game, Master of Orion, and X-COM, I was in strategy-game-heaven.

  • Elemental War of Magic tryes to remake this

    It was released today

  • Life magic is so cheese!

  • Oh God this game could have stolen my entire life away from me, if only it hadn't had so many annoying glitches.... Even with the patches there were things that were just plain stupid and unplayable by today's standards.

  • @MediaFilter Uhh, like what? I play it all the time and I don't see any serious problems.

  • lol love the music...

  • Eldrich the chosen... Life force Myrran, and incantation with 500 mp:) rulz against 7 sky drakes with immunity and other blessings:)

  • why dont they just to remake of these cool old games with just better graphics and multiplayer. the games are there, most of the new strategy games are just mediocre crap at best (not sequals).

  • @killerbee2k Because they would fail miserably, same as by modern games, and they would just ruin good name of the game.

  • @killerbee2k

I still play MOM on dosbox...it's still a much better game than any other fantasy strategy game out there. 2K games tried to remake another great turn based game for this era, Colonization, and they butchered it as well. Here's to hoping Stardock can deliver with Elemental: War of Magic.

  • @killerbee2k Elemental: War of Magic is supposed to be similar.

  • @killerbee2k Check out Elemental: War of Magic. Supposedly it is the spiritual successor to this wonderful old school game. I will definately look into it, as there are several pre release playtroughs that looked amazing and immersive.

  • @killerbee2k Yes, I would like them to remaster Loom, Monkey Island, Indiana Jones games... :( And Master Of Magic of course. ^^ Jaer and Malleus rules.

  • @crisssnapjaw well they have remastered Monkey Island on the PS3 :)

  • @killerbee2k preaching to the choir

  • @killerbee2k Consolefags dont like strategy game.

  • Fang was always my favorite hero simply because he flies, I guess. The appropriate item enchantments or Sorcery magic can easily take care of that angle, though. Since I never could get the sound and music to run on my downloaded version of the game, thanks for uploading it ;) Nostalgia rules!

  • @eltsoldier sound and music has to be set up before you run the game by running the install.exe inside the main folder. select the music and sound then it writes a config file inside for the game to run. dos box runs this game just fine with perfect sound and music but you have to set it up first.

  • Warrax was my favorite hero... I would explode every time he wanted to join my army

  • Now available, along with MOO1 and 2 on GOG (dot) com!

  • Similiar to Age of Wonders. Btw old games are great!

  • @mikepalomino i've found a good site with instructions and now MoM works great ^^ even with Vista

  • Definitely time for a good remake of this and "of course" for MOO2. ^^ Loved these games...

  • @TTiger75 Check out Elemental: War of Magic.

  • @Elbahsaw

    What he said.

  • This game looks great. I never got to play it back in the day, but I always wanted to. There was something about this era of strategy games that were both addictive, fun and deep without being overwhelming. So many games today sacrifice depth for the sake of graphics.

Now that GOG has it, I may have to buy it after viewing this video :D

    Thank you for sharing!

  • this was my first game i've ever played (and one of the best) but i can't get it work with the DOSbox it's a shame but thanks for the good video :D

  • @p4hbeowulf Have you checked the VOGONS Forums to see if you can find answers to your problem running the game? What exactly is happening? Have you run the setup program to make sure you have the proper audio configuration set? Are you running a 64bit version of Windows Vista/7 perhaps?

I'm asking very generalized questions as I don't own MoM but I do play Master of Orion and other early Micropose games and as long as they are setup properly they should run fine in Dosbox.

  • MoM is being resurrected once more!

Dragonsword (search for Dragonsword MoM on Google) is dedicated to the preservation of the MoM flame, offering a myriad of features for nostalgic fans:

    - active forum

    - challenge and tournament games

    - a project that aims to fix all known bugs in the game and improve the AI

    - a project that seeks to rebalance the game with focus on strategic diversity

    - a dedicated and growing userbase, testament to the game's longevity

Hope to see some of you!

  • @Catnub

    Thank you for tip-off

  • Playing this right now on dosbox. Like Civ II one of the undying games I will return to sooner or later. Even considering setting up a win98 machine for this and a few others, but dosbox runs fine these days. And the wealth of information still online proves we are not alone. Sadly Age of wonders (with its "garden" design and limitations) and the few others don't even come close.

  • Why isnt this game on XBLA? add some multiplayer a little hd and whammy huge hit again. I used to play this game for hours. I wish I could again... Thanks for posting the video.

  • hi everybody! i was a big MoM fan back in the day, and surprised people haven't mentioned the Fall from Heaven 2 mod for Civ 4 BTS yet. Of course, gameplay is based on Civ 4 and ymmv, but it's also in a fantasy world, with hundreds of spells and items, heroes, etc. Worth checking out. I can't find a decent gameplay vid on youtube tho :(

  • Gotta have the haste, it's the bomb.

  • Are you playing this on DosBox? It seems very smooth, is it just an old computer?

  • Yes, it is played under DosBox.

  • @warrax111

What settings are you running it at? I can't get it that smooth, If I increase the cycles too much the music is all messed up.

  • This was recorded with DosBox 0.72, or even an earlier version. Try to use those. You need to set up dynamic core CPU in Dosbox.conf, and manualy set cycles to such level, that overall CPU load in task manager will reach 80-90%.

  • Thanks very much, I'll give that a try!

  • @DiamondSoul

    I play at 15,000....plays nice.

  • I actually failed my first year if uni because of this game. Playing until sunrise didn't help my classes.

  • war of magic looks alright, but gameplay mechanics seem a bit dull... like games build for 3d graphics but lack any of the depth games like MoM or MOO series had. disgusts me there are no good games like this!

  • There another upcoming game like this as well Age of Wonder or Lord of Magic... called Elemental: War of Magic by stardock. Im getting it :)

  • I'm afraid, that mattrospecs is right, it will not get that depth, but also a try is good. :-)

  • lol i havent played that in years, ppls still play it?

  • of course, its unbeatable game. :-)

  • Ahh this fang is really grat :)

  • why dont u guys play age of wonders?

  • what a nerd

  • I just realized the music sounds a bit like the music from Hook.

  • I used to play this game a lot.

And its counterpart Master of Orion too.

  • I let someone borrow my copy and they did not give it back ,where can i get another copy??

  • BTW, there's a huge exploit that makes this game even easier. If you have sorcery books and know the Flight spell, just build a fleet of the best ships and cast flight on them (missiles immunity and spell lock make a great addition). You'll now have a fleet of flying ships that can move not only across the sea but across land, and in battles the computer's army will just stand there as your flying ships bombard it to death.

  • One of the best PC games ever. Unfortunately, once you get good at it, it's way too easy to win and the only challenge comes from surviving the early stages of the game when you're still weak and being attacked. Later, an experienced all-paladin army or just one or two powerful heroes can easily conquer the entire map.

  • I once played a game similar to this one, but for the life of me, I can't recall the name of it.

any idea where I could get this one?

  • I dont like this video cuz it reminds me how old i am xD

  • I love this game. I love it! I love every aspect of this game. I love every color, every pixel, every breath of atmosphere. The music. The idea. The feelings. The memories. No other game ever get close to this one. Its my champion. It is not still perfect. So there is a chance to improve it. But only someone, who understand it, can be successfull in this goal. The One cannot be fouled by desire of money. His mind and heart have to be clean, and his unfailing intent have to dance with creativity.

  • I also still play this awesome game, just so creative... would like to know some programming just so that I could mod the races, to balance things out (Gnolls are very underwhelming, for example...).

Master of Magic, Master of Orion, Ultima 6 & both 7, Darklands, Betrayal at Krondor... damn I like oldies !

  • and I know programming, but my creative spirit and inspiration has been broken, so it's instrument in useless hands.

  • Also still playing. It's amazing how a DOS game can still be so addictive. It would be perfect a sequel or remake, but as WhiteMage1972 said, keeping the wondeful base of this game,

  • MOM was my favorite single player game during the last 15 years. Too bad that I couldn't find a better turn based strategy yet. It desperately needs a sequel or remake. It needs serious AI development, better balancing of units and spells, bug fixes, multiplayer option and virtually no removal of what it already has. It is crucial that they do not screw up like they did with the Master of Orion 2, 3 and Civilization 3, 4 sequels. MOM is a very well designed, deep, and highly replayable game.

  • Yeah, sequel should be fine, but I think, it is difficult decision to make remake of such wonderfull game. I agree, that this game needs better AI, diplomatic options, but basic gameplay and atmosphere should remain same. I personaly think, heroes should not be so strong at high levels, that no weaker unit can touch them, even in numbers.

  • Fang was the best one :)

The game isn't flawless though, destroy the capitol and all of the enemys armies are paralyzed, they won't move at all. That's the first thing you should on the hardest level of difficulty because it's almost impossible to finish the game without it :)

  • I loved this game. I found out about Age of Wonders II: Shadow magic recently which is claimed to be the 'Spiritual Successor of MoM'. It's quite enjoyable. I remember in MoM getting Fang the Draconian felt like winning the lottery in random events - he was ridiculous at high levels w/ a couple items. I was always dissapointed when Summon Hero didn't produce him.

  • While not actually a sequel, Lords of Magic was very similar in gameplay and was pretty damn fun. Not quite as amazing as Masters of Magic, but it comes close in that gameplay style of turn based fantasy strategy. Not related in any way but gameplay, also consider Heroes of Might and Magic for similar gameplay.

  • Thanks for bringing me back this was one of my favorite games when I was like 12. This and X-com and then eventually Command and Conquer ;)

  • Best game ever. Still playing.

  • Here Here!

  • Commented 6 months ago. Still playing...

  • How i remember this! oh what fun times!

How i wish that it were redone with today's graphics done in realtime with a multiplayer function.

  • I love this game, played it so much. I remember it had a glitch that when you summoned an item and renamed it it became uberpowerfull and your heroes could just own the ennemy with it in a heartbeat.. fun times

  • HAhahaha nice game hahaha made in 1990 :D

  • I love this game. MoM and DOOM 2 back in the day took many happy hours from me. The heroes got ridiculously over-powered but the game had so much replay value, spells, races, etc. especially for such an old game.

  • Yeah, good times. ;-) Also Settlers 1, Daggerfall and Transport Tycoon took many hours from me. :-)

  • Age of Wonders is REALLY similar to this game. I'm curious if they had the same developers.

  • Best game imo!

  • Wow ! didnt know that one. It looks like an older version of Heroes of might and magic. Seems great.

  • It plays like a mix between Heroes and Civ / Master or Orion. One of the greatest games ever, IMO. Greath atmhosphere, very fitting music (that adapts to your gameplay situation), hundreds of cool spells, thousands of items, dozends of heroes, city improvements, over a hundred troup variants, varied and hard enemy wizards, various ways to win the game, FANTASTIC replayvalue, ...

  • No dude, it's Master of Magic, as you can see in title and it don't sux. You can proof it. Here is detailed list of instructions, how to do it:

    1. Get a brain. 2. Download Dosbox. 3. Get it work 4. Play&Enjoy

  • I'd never even heard of this until recently (Then again I was a little kid when this came out) Just watching this makes me want to play it.

  • They should do a re-make of this game I think.

  • Totaly agree with you, this game is awsome for a 1994 game production.

  • is in work

    Elemental: War of Magic

  • Thanks for this, I even didn't notice, as I'm not paying attantion to new games. But its not sequel, it is a game, that have inspiration in MoM, but will go its own way (which can be better or worse, depending on geniality of developers, but imo overcome MoM in it's times is really difficult goal)

  • Age of Wonders is the spiritual successor to this game, and its sprite based graphics are simply beautiful.

  • warrax was my favorite... this game was so much fun for its time

  • Not even impossible :)

  • Great video man. I can honestly spend hours playing this game.

  • wow, youtube is awesome, thanks for loading this fun if obscure and overlooked game, warrax :)

  • yw friend, the game is really great. ;-)

  • yep. It combined what made CIV great and the fun parts of fantasy RPG type games. the only down side was the dumb AIs. only once did the enemy ever attack me (and that was in the hardest level).

  • Looks very dated now though;

  • I think - not for those, that played it in the time, when it was quite new. For example, when I play some very old game, that I didn't play before, the graphics is disturbing me, but when I'm playing similiar old game, that I've played in its age, graphics just don't disturb me.

  • I don't generally like strat games but this is one of my all time favorite games. It immerse you into the realm of fantasy so deeply.

  • Comment removed

  • Civilization was released before MoM. I was playing Civ on my Amiga. However MoM is a much better game than Civ (1).

  • is this dosbox? i can't get the music/sound to work properly with dosbox. which is too bad cuz i rly like the music. but even mute it's a great game.

  • Yeah, it's recorded under Dosbox. You need to set up card in dosbox config, and same in MoM (install.exe file)

  • I've been searching for a Windows Based adaptation or remake or reimagining of this game for at least 10 years...

I've come to the conclusion someone just needs to decompile then recompile it for Windows Use ... Like with OpenTTD.

    Any takers?

  • Are you serious? You should look into Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. It's practically a remake.

  • No it isn't. It's similar in many ways, but not quite there in most aspects.

  • lookes like heroes of might and magic

  • Yeah exactly, only COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

  • Yeah, too bad the AI sucked.

  • I just starting playing this game again, dosbox FTW! lol.

  • This game is the most awesome strategy game EVER!

And that's ages before Civilization and HoMM!!!

  • Wow.. this game brings back some serious memories. What a great time it was.

  • there will be another one coming soon , it's called Elemental: war of magic. by stardocks. coming this 2010 :)

  • i neeed to play this online, the cpu is too easy

  • Check out Implode's multiplayer version. He's got the only remake still in active development, and he's quite far judging by the screenshots.

  • already tried it, just plain out doesnt connect

  • cool.....

  • my fav for ever

  • Dude! This evil little game has cost me more lost hours than anything ;) My favourite is picking all death or nature books, rushing out a unit of Wraiths or Gorgans ASAP, and then squashing all four enemies by 1405 =)

  • Favourite heroes: Any caster with super arcane, Bowmen with super blademaster. Like Warrax, Torin, Necromancer and Dark Knight the best.

  • I love this game too. When I play full Nature, I try to get Gorgons asap. They can kill almost anything on Mirar. When I play full Chaos, I either swarm with Hellhounds as they are cheap to summon or maintain or summon Evil Eyes/Beholders. They can kill a lot of stuff too.

As for full sorcery, I find the spell confusion and phantom warriors can help you take neutral towns easily.
