Great Song. Both The Carpenters and Phil Alvin of "The Blasters" lived very close to each other in Downey, California. Could you imagine Karen and Phil singing "I'm Shakin" together.
@NYKID10014 "Ignorance is bliss and so on...is it better to be thought dumb...shall I go on?" If you're really from NY, you know these lyrics. Take hate somewhere else.
I have heard many, many times that I sound like Karen Carpenter.....I would love to know what you think. I write all original music.... please click on my channel and tell me what you think of my songs! Thanks!
@plinkymist Actually Richard wrote only 2 or 3 of their hits. His talent was mainly as an arranger, performer, and background singer. One of the best things the Carpenters did was choose quality songs to perform and record. For some reason, people have gotten where they think musicians are only good if they write their own stuff. Not true at all.
They had one hit after another. As did ABBA. All the while we had Led Zep, Aerosmith, Stones, Skynrd, Bad Company, frankly, the list is way too ENDLESS to name them all... dam we were freaking lucky!!
Karen Carpenter is the epitome of class and talent; she is dressed modestly; she doesn't feel the need to be provocative and inappropriate as some current pop and r&b stars do. THIS is music that she brings -- along with wholesome, feminine beauty.
How could someone dislike this song? My God! These 200 "no-likers" must not have souls. This is a masterpiece and as American as apple pie--and I don't care if you're old, young, black, white, gay, straight, polk-a-dot...this song is just a thing of beauty. Respect.
Early on The Carpenters version of Help opened the concerts & then certainly most fans are familiar with Superstar open the concerts later.Superstar was a bear of a song to sing & in reality Karen would have rather opened the show with For all we know with a little bit of extra instrumentation in the beginning to get through the bow for the audience, but Superstar had the long instumental opening & it worked. Alot of these shows mishandled them, but Andy Williams show was pure class& a joy to do.
One of the best voices ever. But one thing I couldn't help noticing. That dress she's wearing is a far cry from platform slut boots, leotards and a face that looks like it fell onto a pile of makeup like you see now days.
my wife has the blues, and I e-mailed this to her at work... made her feel better. I dont know if it was because she realized I understand how she feels, or if it was like watching Jerry Springer, she just felt better knowing that someone else is bluer than her. Either way, it worked :)
To Respond to an earlier comment. Randy Schmidt & I are all good as far as I'm concerned, we can be friends, I could actually add many chapters to the book (Little Girl Blue) HOWEVER, that's really the only area we differ, if I didn't get blessings from RC to do a book I wouldn't. That's just me. We all share the Love for Karen, in different ways, some as fans, some as friends, & some as family & I would like to believe Randy does as well. Little Girl Blue is 100% accurate no question about it!
Thank you for that stoneyboy1970.I come here to listen to this beautiful music and read what other well educated smart people have to say.He should be ashamed of himself
Do me a favor. Please don't type nasty comments on videos like these. I can't show these great singers to my 9 year old daughter because of morons like you. Thanks for playing!
@BIGAL6666alan So in your opinion X-Factor "produces" 4 octave voices like Karen's all the time, and does it better?! Then you proceed to call Karen a "medioca singer" (BTW it's spelt "mediocre")? Talk about making a fool of yourself! If only X-Factor actually had voices like that, then I'd actually have a strong reason to watch it instead of changing the channel. But sadly their "contestants" are nowhere near Karen Carpenter's vocal range or abilities, so I'm afraid I'll have to pass on it.
This is how I choose to remember Karen, sweet and so great. Her range was remarkable and there will simply never be another who can match her. The music world lost a true gem when she died and it never was the same afterward.
She hated being up front and being the centre of attention. She only ever wanted to stay in the background and play drums, but when their management realised she had a voice from heaven she was forced against her well into taking centre stage.
i hope i don't jinx it by saying that i'm having a great monday... touch wood, fingers crossed, there is spozed ta be a big storm heading thisaway O_O
Has anyone ever wondered if Karen kept a journal/diary? I'm just curious...
I've never heard anybody mention this and even Randy Schmidt doesn't mention it in his new book (which by the way, is the first & last bio on Karen that I'll ever need to read!).
@dvinedzine she never was fat, but she had a little baby fat, a little innocent chub, and someone unthinkingly refered to her as Richard's chubby sister. That was the beginning of the end. Also, anerexia isn't just about weight, it's about control, and Karen had almost no control in her life. Her parents, mainly her mother, controled her and favored Richard, due in no way to his own fault. He loved and adored Karen. It was a terrible loss!
My mom sings like her. She really has her voice. When I was in her tummy she used to sing so much this song and now every time I hear this song it brings me tears...
This brings back memories of a student job I had in the early 80's. The store music was provided by an ancient 8 track and there were only two cassettes one of which was the Carpenters. Many long hours were spent stacking shelves in the company of Karen's amazing wonderful voice.
If Richard decides that he wants to release any additional Carpenters Christmas music to the public,it's up to Richard. Same thing holds true with all of the Carpenter specials for DVD purchase.
