Great rendition by a great guitarist-unrivaled in my opinion except a few who come close-we lost an excellent amazing guitarist in hank garland/thanks for posting this!-loved the movie 'crazy' too....
Hank had an unfortunate problem many of us regular guitarists don't. It's called virtuosity (did I spell that right?). Most of us could practice and play our entire lives and never have his abilities or gifts.
@TheBlueDjango i do understand that all i was doing was cheering on my garlands skills after some numpty said it was not as good as john5 ....i know how good john5 is i just prefer hanks style of playing....i appreciate a good musician as well as the next guy....peace!
be careful while watching "Crazy" they took some liberties on Hank's life. Search around and read several articles on the internet to seek out the truth.
@MarkEaster I'm glad to hear you say that, because I saw that movie, and I've read a bit about Garland over the years, and the two don't match up, especially the circumstances of his wreck.
@yarmouk334 this was his warm up song for many years before it was recorded. He was overly familiar with the song. That said he was extremely talented and worked & recorded with some big names.
Poor Hank...I watched the movie about his life the other day, and I was glad to see that he gave blacks a chance to play their music with him, despite the huge criticism he got for doing that...Doing that cost him his career as well, because after his car was hit off the road by another car, Hank couldn't play like he used to before.
@mbrk6827 He couldn't do much playing after his wreck, unfortunately. It robbed him of most of his ability to play guitar. That was in the early 60's. It's a tragic story. Did you know he did lots of session work with Elvis prior to his brain injury? He played on Little Sister and Can't Help Falling in Love to name a few.
@mbrk6827 Definitely before. He never fully recovered from the wreck and was unable to work as a session musician. He lived for another 43 years but never recorded again.
i cant even believe the noise that you hear today, this is the kind of music that we need back. not metal or any of that screamin' shit, the simplest way to say it is by saying that we need talent again. the 2 people that disliked this video simply are trolls that have nothing better to do but sit behind their computer a make people feel bad about themselves, so all you trolls out there can go fuck yourselves. all that there is to say, is that Hank Garland.... we salute you.
@tightsparten337 I totally agree with you. In fact you are not going far enough. Let's just out-rule metal and all that shit. And while we're at it, let's just burn those damn educating books. Who the hell needs personal opinions and variety when all we like is the best anyway?
@Duiss well you know what? excuse me for excercising my first amendment, so fuck off man, i like hank garland, i like metal, plus when i typed up that comment, i was kinda pissed off at my friend that kept playing music off of my laptop, while i was trying to concentrate on some work.
@tightsparten337 No i don't know why you would specifically refer to your first amendment right, it's not like i forbade you to speak. I was merely stating that hating on other types of music just invites this stupid "the music i like is the best and everything else is shit" mentality. Also "we" have a lot of talent. Maybe you just didn't discover all of the awesome bands that you could like yet.
If you make such a snappy comment expect a retort.
It's true that all the echo here gives the impression that more notes are being played than what are being played. But the thing about these great guitarists, is that they kept the ideas flowing, and nailed rhythm If you became a real studio player on any instrument, you could make your solo sound like it was completely written out. Check out Mancini's Peter Gunn, Mr. Lucky, and Breakfast at Tiffanies, and listen to those solos....or the sax solo on Madeleine Peyroux's Summer WInd. Perfection.
I saw the movie about Hank called "Crazy," and am so happy I could catch this again on You-Tube. You-Tube is a world treasure. We all need to be so grateful for the musical riches it brings us. And as for Hank Garland! What a wonderful musician. They say our greatest musicians are angels come to earth to help us through this difficult life.
Thanks so much for posting this piece. If I didn't see it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it. I always thought that this record was the product of studio engineers dubbing and splicing. How wrong I was.
Tell you what: he did the guitar work on Elvis' (Now and Then There's) A Fool Such as I. some sublime stuff. This here is just a rag, but Fool's real blues.
@strandwolf Hank played some blistering lead on some choice Elvis rock cuts too - Little Sister, Big Hunk o' Love, I Need Your Love Tonight, I'm Comin' Home et.
On the video version by John 5 somebody thought it was the Benny Hill theme song. I told him that was Yakety Sax. But now that you mention it, it does sound a bit like Battle of New Orleans.
Regarding that echo/delay sound, he is almost certainly using an Ecco-Fonic, a stand-alone tape delay unit (the first of its kind - released one year before the more famous Echo-Plex) placed between the guitar and the amplifier. He is known to have used one on Patsy Cline's 1961 recording of "I Fall To Pieces" and this was broadcast only a few years earlier. Super cool sound.
Never got his due. As good a jazz player as just about anyone, played country before tele twang and drummersI BTW, I want that stoptail PAF 345 and tube exhoplex!.
@historicus146 "back then", they used to have tube powered amps, in this case made by Fender. With those original amps, this "sound" you hear isn't from any pedal, it's from an original Fender amp. Reverb, and echo didn't need a custom pedal back in 1955.
@strangeones4 I'm with you on the reverb... but as far as the echo... I've heard Hank used an Echo device (although it probably wasn't activated by a pedal) ... I don't remember the name. Would that echo effect have been built into the Fender amp?
It's too bad Hank had that terrible car accident. His brother had to teach him guitar from scratch but he never was the same after that (brain damage). This man was a great studio musician who experimented with different sounds and styles of playing guitar. Hank was ahead of his time.
His contributions to the music world will never be forgotten.
@bjbigham sorry i have to completely disagree with you.i have listened to john 5's version and yes the guy can play there is no doubt about that..but to me hanks is far more polished and technically better yes there is the style issue which pushes people in one direction or the other but after listening to johns version i came to the realization that it may have been played faster but there was no depth.he ran out of ideas after using hanks licks and then just winged it from there please reply
@bjbigham plus there is no distortion to hide any inadequacy just pure clean picking with so echo thrown in for good measure , now that is real talent..not just fast playing with effects and distortion to hide and failings which many use today
@oddjobjujitsu look up a dude named Paul Gilbert. He loves distortion but that doesnt hide anything cause he is the most accurate player that i know of.
@DillonBerkley ..you call that screeching shit guitar music??? He sounds just like all the rest of those mop haired chord running pukes...I like to hear guitar music that is identifiable...!
@MegaBohunk well im not sure what you watched so give him a chance and look up technical difficulties. if you dont like that then im fucking sorry for trying to share something i thought you might like.
@DillonBerkley ....Hey", everybody to their own thing..! No offense intended. Comparing guitar players is like comparing girls knockers, some are great and some average...!
@oddjobjujitsu Just have to say, John-5 is one of the most versitile guitar players I have ever heard, and can do anything clean than he can distorted. Go listen to his other bluegrass songs and come back and say the same thing you just said. Too many people just don't do their research nowadays. *Shakes head*
@washapdude90 it's all about opinions.....no more no less.....yes i know john-5 is a very talented guitarist.....but just does nothing for me..my opinion..and thank you for yours
@oddjobjujitsu well, i agree he's great and "Jazz Winds from a New Directions" is epic but....there certainly is a lot of echo on his sound in this clip. (just to kid you a bit)
@drumuitar Ah, come on, he's just speaking truth to power, er, to some YouTubies. Why DID the PM suck up to w anyway? What a disaster, and it continues. Hank, now--doubt he woulda done it thata way....
